Lady Andromeda lay on her bed bandages covering her head, and her abdomen. Her arm was in a sling, and her body ached all over. Her maids stayed close to help as much as they could but they really just had to wait for the young woman to recover. She was lucky to have survived, at least that is what the healers had said. Her condition could have caused more splintered bones that could have cause more internal damage. Lady Andromeda allowed the tears to continue to fall as her body cried out in pain.
She was so tired, and so many people were depending on her and she needed to heal quickly for them. She tried not to move but when she did she would groaning pain. The maids couldn't do anything but try and sooth her. They gave her water but she refused food. They tried to get her to eat but she just wouldn't accept any. "M'Lady, you need to eat. You will heal faster if you eat." Maid Corrine complained. Lady Andromeda just groaned and shook her head. The maids just looked at her with worry. This was the worst injuries they had ever seen her suffer.
The sun started to fall below the horizon and the shadows of the trees began to creep across the ground. Lady Andromeda still had not left her bed. She rolled over, groaned and then cried out in pain and curled in on herself. The maids looked over and realized something had changed and they rushed to her side. Maid Mauve climbed on to the bed behind her mistress to try and roll her over. She pushed her knee into the bed and realized it felt wet. Confuse she backed up and noticed the sheets were darker in one spot. She laid her hand down in the spot and pulled it up and realized the spot was blood. "Corrine." she said holding her hand out. Corrine looked up and saw the blood and got very concerned. "Go call the healer." she ordered as she returned to her mistress. Maids Mauve nodded and ran from the room. "M'Lady, where does it hurt?" Maid Corrine questioned. Lady Andromeda did not answer but did grab her stomach. Maid Corrine moved the blankets off her mistress and saw the blood covering the bottom half of her chemise. Corrine suspected where the bleeding was coming from but did not want to say anything to her mistress. She was also not sure if she was right. She was sure that it would never happen. Lady Andromeda was to weak and sickly for such a thing.
Maid Mauve rushed back into the bedchambers followed by the healer. The maids stepped back and allowed the healer to examine the young woman. They waited with great concern. They hoped that she would be alright. They also feared how Sir Rahael would react if they had to write to him and say that his wife was dead. The healer looked over all of they young woman. The source of the bleeding was found and it surprised the healer. She had not expected Lady Andromeda to have ended up in this condition. "M'Lady, I am sorry to have to tell you but you have miscarried." she informed. "What?" Lady Andromeda questioned confused. "M'Lady it appears that you were with child. But your injuries have caused a miscarriage." the healer explained. Andromeda gasped and began to cry. "I am sorry, M'Lady." the healer apologized. " Ladies, help me get Lady Andromeda to the the bath to clean her up. Then we can change the bedding and get her back to bed." the healer instructed. the maids approached the bed and the three women helped the Lady out of bed and helped her hobble to the bath. They set her in the tub and called more maids to start filling it. Maid Corrine stayed with her mistress while Maid Mauve and the healer went to change the bed. The healer returned to the bathroom and poured herbal tonics into the now full bathtub where Lady Andromeda was lounging. "M'Lady, rest here for a bit and allow the herbs to work." she instructed. The lady nodded weakly. The healer left and promised to return later.
Maid Corrine and Mauve sat with the lady while the war water soothed her muscles. The water had turned red from the lady's bleeding but had started to become clearer after the healer had poured in the tonics. It was clear that the bleeding had stopped so the maids helped the lady out of the tub and wrapped her in a towel. They helped her hobble back to the bed. They laid her on the fresh linens and allowed her to go to sleep. They left the room and went to the sitting room. They sat in the chairs and watched the fire. They were both silent for a while and then Maid Corrine spoke, "Mauve, you should get some rest. We will take shifts to watch over Lady Andromeda." she suggested. "Are you sure?" Maid Mauve questioned. "Yes, she will have a long road ahead of her and we will have to be available at any moment she may need something." Maid Corrine responded. " I will return in a few hours." Maid Mauve conceded and left the sitting room and headed for her bedchamber. Maid Corrine stood and walked over to the shelves and picked out a book. she returned to her seat and settled in for a long night.
A few hours later Maid Mauve returned to the sitting room to find Maid Corrine staring blankly into the fire from the couch. Well, she thought the other maid was staring blankly. When she approached the woman and heard soft snores. The maid was sleeping with her eyes open. Maid Mauve had never seen anyone sleep like that before. She wondered if she should wake her or just lay her down on the couch and let her sleep.
Maid Mauve smiled and shook her head. She gently helps her colleague to lay down, without waking her, and found a blanket to cover the woman. She had decided it would be better to just let Maid Corrine sleep, she always worked so hard and needed a bit of a break.
