Chapter 14 - A shortcut I can't afford to take

In the early morning Dreue set on the bed in his room at the inn, as soon as he woke up, he left the inn where the priest, William healed him when was injured leaving him a letter.

"William helped me, I am very thankful for him, I will replay his favor in the future, although his offer is very good, I will not be able to explore and experiment with my Perception ability, let alone understanding and discovering the hidden knowledge and power in the books of Decryption and Creation"

"I think I should stay alone till I master the Perception at least, when I learn how to use it fully and how hide it from the watchful eye of powerful people then I will consider joining an organization"

"Although the path of the mage will be full of hardships and dangers, I believe I will reach much higher place than that I will reach of I accepted the offer of William"

"Still his offer is very appealing, if I met him before discovering the books then surely, I would join him, I mean I will have power and honor, I will become priest if not higher, I will not need to put much effort"

"Hmmmmm…. maybe I should give it a shoot?"

"Let's leave it for now, if I was unable to recover my core later, I will walk the path of divine power…. that's if his offer still stands"

Dreue was lost in thoughts, it was really a hard choice, he will miss this one lifetime chance if he refused, although he believes William will not retaliate back against him for refusing his offer, he will surely be displeased, on the other hand the with the help of the books he had much more potential.

"Maybe I should take William's offer while reveling some of my ability, but if the value of the Perception turned out to be much higher than my current value as a person with high affinity with the so called divine power , the consequences would be unimaginable"

"This is most likely the case"

"It is not just the church, if any faction, organization, kingdom or whatever learns about the books and the Perception ability I acquired through them, they will go all-out after me"

"And even if I were to join one of them voluntary, giving them the books and offering all my knowledge, I will never be one hundred percent safe, no matter how righteous the I join faction is, performing human experiments on me will never be out of question…."

"Using the logic of 'greater good', 'necessary evil' or even bullshit like 'world peace', you will be able to justify anything, let alone sacrificing the life of just one insignificant man for it"

"Long story short, I should NEVER risk exposing my power even for if the probability was very low, even if I had to give up everything for it"

"I am destined to take the dangerous long path to ultimate power"

After thinking for long time, Dreue built the foundation upon which he will base his future decision.

….

Later a night Dreue took out the books, he had no safe place to store them so he hid them behind the drawers in the small chest, it was the best place he could think of.

"Before opening the books let me first try using the Perception" he removed the bandage that was on his right eye, he opened his eye slowly, there was a bit of tingling sensation and slight pain, he took a deep breath, focused his attention and looked around though Perception.

He was able to sense mana more clearly than before, he looked at his own body, the mana pathways were clear, the core itself was visualized fully, he was even able to see the carks on it from which the mana was leaking.

He hurried to the window looking at the people in the street, he was able to see mana from longer distance than before, the mana cores and the silhouettes become more sharp and well defined.

While mages appeared as a silhouette with central core, martial artists aura appeared as transparent coating, covering all of their bodies, it made sense because unlike mages, martial artists aura is not concentrated as cores, instead in spread throughout every part of their bodies.

"I still don't know how would priest appear though Perception, they are somewhat similar to mages, both mana and divine power are slimier , so I assume they may have something like the mana core, I had no chance to use the Perception on William previously, maybe I should pay him another visit"

Dreue focused his attention on a young mage who was passing by.

"I can't see the mana cores of other mages as clear as mine, I should later spend some time observing the cores of other mages, maybe that's would help me figure a solution to repair my core"

Dreue closed the window, covered it with the curtain and locked the door. He took out a small box and put on the bed, the closed box didn't differ much from the outside except for the fact that he was able to how many nuclei are there roughly unlike before.

"It is expected, the box seems to be made of some material that blocks and blurs against the powerful senses of the experts, let's see if I will be able to learn something new about these nuclei since the Perception is much stronger now" He slowly open the box, took all the nuclei and put them on the bed.

Nine nuclei, his eye now is able to endure the light shining out of them, Dreue was able to see their color for the first time, they were blue.

"I have some low-level nuclei here let me compere them"

The low-level nuclei appeared bland; he was not apple to feel anything different from before except for two of them.

He put away all the other nuclei and focused his attention on these two, he was apple to see a hint of red color in their centers, it was very weak when compared with the higher quality ones, but it was still color.

"I think these two nuclei are from fire foxes, so I can assume that the color corresponds to the element of the nuclei, colorless ones don't have a specific element are just attribute-less nuclei, they contain normal mana"
