"It's my fault, but you just didn't have to do that. It was all caught on camera and my parents saw you."
"Collateral damage."
"Better, I really don't know what kind of crazy family you are to play these shady games for a job. If your parents now think I'm crazy, so much the better. Now the feeling goes both ways." He denies and grabs his hair, inhales, and exhales abruptly and in two long strides of his own walks over to me making our talk a little more intimate.
"They wanted to see me have a formal life."
"But you didn't have one Nathan, you were going to lie to them. You wanted to lie to all of us and now it blew up in your face" I modulate my tone of voice and my irony and speak to him in a more empathetic way.
Perhaps the closeness was already taking its toll.
"I'm trying to remedy that" He puts his hands on my forearm and I am unable to pull back: "I want to make things work for us, this time by doing it right."
