Emily POV
It sounds like a warning but the smile on her face confuses me. I wait for her to come to my door to escort me and as I get off, I cling to her arm as if my life depended on it.
Although the people around us did not pay much attention to our presence, his urbane and exotic looks were unusual to me. In fact, I found Nathan's presence in such a place disconcerting.
"Why couldn't you just be normal and take me to the movies?" I asked.
"We've been to the movies many times, Em."
"And dinner? Why don't we have dinner?"
"It was more fun when you could eat something other than water and air, so no."
"Nathan" Someone of prominent stature and a glaring bald head passes very close to my shoulder, making me a notch more uneasy.
Nathan laughs at me, probably, exaggerated nervousness, and takes me under his arm. He stops us in front of one of the small storefronts and after reading the light signs bolted to the windows, my neurons burst.
