Heaving my backpack over my shoulders, I walked out of the inside of the Deku Tree. Link was already waiting for me outside, the soft rays of morning shining down through the flower-covered branches.
"Ready?" I asked him and he gave a quick nod. We had finished our business here and needed to get back to the main task at hand: finding the four champions. I looked up at the Deku Tree and bowed my head. "Thank you so much for your help."
The Deku Tree smiled down at Link and I. "I wish you safe travels. May Hylia guide you on the road ahead. I fear dark days are ahead of us. Nonetheless, have faith, children."
"Thank you." I repeated.
Next to me, Link looked up at the Deku Tree with determined eyes, "I shall return to take the trials soon."
"We will await your return, Hero. And Zelda, the spirits should not bother you on your departure from the Lost Woods."
I nodded my head in gratitude. I doubted it would be as bad as the first time since at least now I knew what was happening and that I wasn't losing my mind, however I would rather not deal with the pain that came with it.
"Until next time." The Deku Tree bid us farewell.
Link and I bowed our heads and then made for the exit, waving goodbye to the tiny Koroks that came to bid us good luck. I smiled at the whimsical creatures, their carefree and cordial nature uplifting.
Soon the bright, vibrant forest of the Korok forest faded away, replaced by the bare, eerie trees of the Lost Woods. Fog surrounded us, making it hard to navigate, but the glow of the Master Sword told us the way to go. I followed Link, sticking close to him, one hand grabbing his blue tunic to make sure I didn't get lost again. Although the Deku Tree had assured me the spirits would leave me alone, I didn't want to chance getting separated from Link again. This time I might not be so lucky as to find him again.
Before I knew it, the fog began to drift away and a familiar structure appeared before us, the crumbling arch that had greeted us when Link and I first entered the Lost Woods. We continued past it until we had fully exited the Lost Woods. I released Link's tunic once through and turned to look back at it, feeling we had made our way through it much faster this time.
Link and I quickly returned to the Woodland Stables, collected our horses and the rest of our belongings, and set off towards Eldin. As we had discussed, we had to loop around close to Zora's Domain and then back up into the Eldin region. However it was a pretty ride down past Trilby Plain, the scenery delightful and even Hyrule Castle looked beautiful to me as the morning sun shone upon it, making it glimmer.
By the afternoon we had entered the marshes of Zora's Domain, walking along the edges. The sand was soft underneath our horses hooves, making the ride slower, but it had been years since I had been in Zora's Domain, so I enjoyed taking in the wetlands. I recalled it rained frequently in Zora's Domain, so I was also pleased that the day had stayed sunny and pleasant.
We didn't spend much time on the cusp of Zora's Domain. Soon the road turned northwards and began to incline. The dirt of the road began to redden, signaling we were entering the Eldin region, where all the rocks seemed to have a reddish-orange hue. We passed several travelers as we neared Ternio Trail, which headed off into Akkala, where the Akkala Citadel was located, a bustling fortress. In a way it had become its own town as many Hylians from the military had taken up base there. Thus their families had also moved there, building small houses at the base of the citadel. Because of that, merchants frequented the area and the stables close by made it perfect for travelers as they could lodge their horses nearby and have a comfy place to stay.
As the afternoon progressed, the Foothill Stables came into view, Celpha Lake behind it. I did my normal routine and paid for one night's lodging for Link and I as well as the horses. Once that was done, I informed the stables owner I would be heading to Goron City for awhile and would need to leave our horses behind as well as some belongings. The owner quickly tallied a price for me, which I paid.
As we squared everything away, I asked, "Do you by chance have any Fireproof Elixirs? Figured I'd bring a few more just in case."
The owner frowned. "I'll look to see if I have any in storage. I'll get back to you later." She said.
"No rush." I replied and thanked her. With that taken care of, I found Link, who was standing behind the stables, standing on a ledge that overlooked Cephla Lake. Dusk was nearing, so the lake was cast in shadows. My eyes then flickered northward, the looming peak of Death Mountain piercing through the sky, the dark rocks and glow of lava a sight to behold.
"It's certainly impressive." Link said, his eyes also fixed on the active volcano before us.
"Yes. And terrifying if I might add."
Link arched an eyebrow. "Why do I feel like there's a story there?"
"No story." I reassured. "But if you've been on the mountain and you're not a Goron, it puts the fear of Hylia in you. I've never felt more mortal than when I was training on that mountain. One wrong step and it's over."
"You were on Death Mountain?" Link asked in surprise.
"Once." I lamented. "I was training with my Sensei."
Link scratched his head, "Your instructors certainly have intense training methods."
I deadpanned. "You have no idea."
"Why exactly did Daruk want you to train on Death Mountain? It seems like there would be safer options."
"He said it would be fun." I replied, smiling sardonically. "I had never been to Death Mountain before, so to him it was like a right of passage." I turned and grinned at Link, "If you're lucky, he'll take you up the mountain."
Link gave a nervous chuckle. "I'm not sure I'd call that lucky."
I glanced back up at the fuming mountain, a soft smile on my lips. "Despite the terror and the heat, it really is the best view in all of Hyrule. You can see everything from up there. Although it's hard to enjoy it since you're so focused on not dying."
"I bet." Link replied.
It was at that moment my stomach decided to let out a loud grumble to inform me it was hungry. I felt a blush rise to my face as Link started to laugh, much to my chagrin. "I guess that's my cue to cook dinner."
I looked away, "I can always buy something too."
"Eh, we're tight on funds, right? So I'll just cook something."
I huffed, "It's not as bad as I made it out. If we need to buy armor, I'll tell Daruk to send an invoice to the Hyrule treasury and they'll pay it for me."
"Dang, we could have been living it up all this time." Link teased.
I crossed my arms. "Very funny, Mr. Hero."
"Mr. Hero?" Link groaned.
"You started it."
"Therefore you have to finish it?" Link asked.
"Always." I smirked.
Link just shook his head. "Come on, let's get dinner started. You can help me chop up some of the ingredients."
I followed him, a smile on my face.
Once dinner was over, a thought crossed my mind. I glanced up at the sky, daylight still remaining. "Are you interested in a little trip?" I asked Link.
Link gave me a questioning look, "Where too?"
I pointed ahead, "Just up the road a little bit."
Link shrugged, "Why not. Just means I can put off packing for a little longer."
I sighed and rolled my eyes at him. "We won't be gone too long."
Quickly I got up and began to head down the road that led into Eldin, Link following close behind. Before us the Maw of Death Mountain loomed, a giant arch carved out of red-brown rock. Within a few minutes we were passing underneath it, the temperature already increasing. And just as we cleared it, there our destination was to the left, a steaming body of water.
"It's Lake Ferona, a sought out hot spring. Eldin is known for its hot springs; many claim they have medicinal properties." I walked over to the hot spring, finding a ledge to sit on. I quickly took off my boots and rolled up my pant legs, dipping my feet into the calming waters. Link followed suit and found a place to sit nearby, also removing his shoes so he could soak his feet in the warmth.
"There are lots of these in Eldin?" Link asked, seemingly enjoying the hot springs.
"A fair amount. Most of them are around this area, although there are a few deeper in Eldin, most of which only the Gorons know about as people tend not to explore Eldin that thoroughly."
"I get why." Link's eyes shifted to the peak of Death Mountain, which was just visible over the towering peaks that surrounded us.
"It is definitely not a hospitable place. Yet the Gorons call it home."
"They are a hardy race."
"You can say that again." I laughed.
Link and I enjoyed ourselves a while longer at the hot springs, basking in the refreshing quality of the water. As the sun set however, we began to make our way back to the stables, knowing we still had to pack for our venture into the fiery climate that was the Goron's domain.
Link and I kept to ourselves the rest of the night, both busy preparing for our departure tomorrow. The stable owner found me later, giving me three Fireproof Elixirs that she had found in storage. I gratefully paid for them and stashed them with the others.
Once everything was finished, I fell into a deep slumber.
I was surrounded by fire, the heat so intense it felt as if my skin would melt off. I backed away, yet all around me were flames, roaring to life with such ferocity. The ground beneath me was hardened lava, still radiating heat. Rivers of molten magma gushed down the mountains in front of me, creating rivers that sweeper past me, setting fire to anything they touched.
In the distance, a hoarse cry echoed and I vaguely made out the shape of what looked like a giant lizard scaling across the mountains, its jaw opening in a mechanical motion. The cry it emitted was deep and made the very ground rumble. Rocks and boulders tumbled down the mountain, quickly swallowed in the pools of lava. The flames around me soared higher and I brought my hands up to shield my face from the heat.
So intense was the heat, I could feel my skin begin to blister. Slowly the flames began to creep, the rivers of lava widening as the magma poured from the mountains.
"Give him the Power of Fire!" A voice thundered out followed by another deep shriek from the colossal lizard that stormed across the mountains.
As these words echoed out, the flames around me grew higher and higher, ebbing closer to me. I crouched low, terror seizing me as the flames descended, consuming me in a frenzy. I screamed as the flames captured me, my entire body on fire.
I woke with a start, my breathing heavy and head pounding. It was still dark, probably the middle of the night. All was quiet, everyone still asleep. I took a deep breath and massaged my temple, trying to calm the tension inside my skull.
The dream I had just had, which I wasn't sure I could call it a dream anymore, was the Sight of the Goddess, which told me to give power to the chosen champion… however I had not appointed the Goron Champion yet. Still, I knew who I was going to pick, so surely this dream meant Daruk was the correct choice. If not, then why would I have this vision now?
I let out a shaky breath, the ache in my head making it painful to think too deeply. Instead I let my thoughts grow quiet and grabbed the second pillow on my bed and crushed it to my face, hoping some of the pressure on my head would dull the pain. It seemed to help, albeit it did make it harder to breathe. Still, it was a price I was willing to pay.
It made me cringe to think the pain could get worse than this. I was almost in tears from the intense pressure in my forehead. Still, I rode out the pain, breathing evenly through my mouth and clearing my mind. It took awhile, but the pain began to ebb and soon I was whisked away by sleep once more.
Morning came and I rolled out of bed groggily, still tired. I swiftly got ready and then Link and I set out, quickly passing under the May of Death Mountain once more. My dream from last night haunted me as we trekked into Eldin, and I glanced at Link, the words on the tip of my tongue.
"I had a dream last night." I said softly.
Link gave me a quick glance, "A dream?"
I nodded. "The one that tells me to give a power to a champion. This dream told me to give the champion the Power of Fire."
Link stared at me for several seconds, "But we haven't even assigned anyone the position of the Goron Champion."
"I know." I replied, "But I know who I am going to ask to be the Goron Champion, my Sensei, Daruk. I'm not positive, but maybe I had the dream now because it is confirming that Daruk is the right person."
Link shrugged, not having a better guess than me. "That makes sense, although it's weird you had the dream now and not after you talked to Daruk."
"I don't fully understand either. But it's the only idea I have. I just have to assume Daruk is the right choice and hope I'm able to give him the Power of Fire." I said, "And honestly, he does fit the description: Strong like the Mountains."
"Very true. So perhaps we don't need to worry about this one." Link tried to ease my nerves.
I nodded, "I hope so."
We passed by several hot springs along the way until the road entered a dark cave, torches hanging from the walls to light the way. Pausing for a moment, I pulled out two Fireproof Elixirs, knowing once we exited the cave we would truly enter Eldin and be consumed by a burning heat.
We drank the Elixirs, the contents burning as they went down my throat. Then we commenced onwards, the torches lighting the way through the cave. A dry wave of heat wafted through the cavern. Soon we exited the cave, the volcanic land of Eldin before me. There were rivers and pools of lava that radiated intense heat. Death Mountain was even closer to us, an ominous presence. The rocks were all tinted red and rough. Giant piers of red stretched towards the sky all around us. Some of the rock was dark and flaky, signaling it was actually dried magma.
I swallowed and then walked forward, following the path before me. However it was at this point that the path stopped looking like a distinct path and blended in with the surroundings. Thankfully I had been to Eldin before and knew the general direction I had to walk.
Walking forward, we eventually reached a staircase that led into the Southern Mines. A river of lava flowed before us, a stone bridge conveniently placed over it, leading further into the mines. Gorons worked relentlessly, chiseling away at rocks and pounding into the mountains, searching for precious ores.
As we passed through, the Gorons paid us no mind, too engrossed in their work to bother with a few passersby. Link and I hurriedly made our way out of the mines, not wanting to be in the way of the bustling Gorons.
"It shouldn't be much further." I said, as we left the mines, the path taking us closer and closer to Death Mountain. Determinedly I continued onwards, the heat bearing down on us, even with the Fireproof Elixir's protection. Soon though a broad rock with a depiction of a smiling Goron carved into it came into view, as well as a large archway at the entrance to Goron City.
Increasing our pace, in a rush we crossed underneath the archway, happy to finally reach our destination. Traversing through Eldin was always a challenge, both the terrain and heat against you.
The city was just as I remembered, hot, industrial, and unrefined. Gorons rolled about the city, easily maneuvering over bridges and roads, streams of lava scattered throughout the city. The roads, bridges, and buildings were all made from a special alloy the Gorons produced that was fire resistant as well as malleable so they could shape it into whatever they desired. Across the city were various holders for torches, however instead of fire burning inside them, there were large chunks of precious ore, polished to a shine. Some had amber, others opals, and a few had shimmering hunks of sapphire, topaz, rubies, or diamond, the rarest of gems. The Goron buildings were dome shaped with wide arching entrances.
My eyes flitted around the city, trying to spot the all too familiar Goron that was my Sensei. Yet I did not spot him amongst the Gorons within view, therefore he was either elsewhere in the city or not here currently.
"It's probably best if we announce our presence to the Goron Boss." I informed Link. "He may also know where Daruk is."
Link nodded and followed behind me as I made my way through the city. I normally was pretty good at navigating, however the layout of the Goron City had confused me on several occasions, causing me to turn about several times. This time was no different than before. After crossing the wrong bridge, I stopped and asked a Goron selling seared meat and vegetables how to get to the Boss. He quickly gave me instructions and Link and I were on our way.
As we reached the top of an incline, a Goron I recognized came into view, his white hair was shorter than his elder brothers, however his beard was long and braided. He had a big build, rotund like most Gorons, however he was larger and broader, his arms thick and durable. His dark brown eyes were focused on a piece of ore in his large burly hands. Upon his back was a large hammer, a brilliant ruby sparkling at the base. He wore dark metal bands around his forearms, a simple design on them, as well as the typical Goron loincloth.
"Donos." I called, making him lift his head from the rock in his hands.
His eyes widened at seeing me, "Do my eyes deceive me? What in Hylia's name are you doing here, Princess Zelda?"
I gave a slight bow of my head in greeting, "I'm actually here on official business." I explained, "I do have some things to discuss with you, but I also need to talk to Daruk."
"Ah yes." Donos mused, fiddling with his braided beard. "He's out on patrol right now. Had a gang of Fire-breath lizalfos stirring up some trouble near the North Mine. Daruk took some Gorons to hunt them down and put a stop to their shenanigans."
"I see." I replied. "No matter, I can talk to him once he has returned. In the meantime, if you aren't busy, I'd like to talk to you for a moment."
"Of course." Donos gave me a broad smile, "Not doing nothing exciting. Inspecting this rock for ore, but that can wait. What can I help ya with, Zelda?"
I quickly explained to the Goron Boss about Calamity Ganon's return and the purpose for my journey. "Therefore I have come here to ask for the Goron's help in the fight to defeat Calamity Ganon as well as to ask Daruk to be the Goron Champion."
Donos nodded his head, a thoughtful look in his eyes. "I see." He mused, "Such bravery for a Hylian. But I would expect no less from my elder brother's protege. Of course we Gorons will help you. Been itching for something exciting to happen anyways, although war's never the pleasant answer. Still, you can count on us. And I'm sure my brother will accept your offer. I don't think he could refuse you; he's got a real soft spot for you."
"Thank you very much Donos. I appreciate your assistance very much. Right now I must finish my quest, but once I return to Hyrule Castle, you shall receive word from us about war preparations."
Donos waved his hand, "No need. We'll start prepping now. I'll get the forges stoking so we can start producing our war hammers and claymores. We'll be ready to go by the time you call on us."
"Excellent." I said, glad he was so on board with my plan, however the Gorons always had been an eager clan. They did not delight in battle, but they liked the excitement as well as crafting their mighty war weapons. Most of the time they were happy to work hard in their mines, but sometimes even the hardworking Gorons needed a break. Battle was one of the few reasons they would take a break.
It was then the noise of rocks rolling over rock came from behind us, causing all three of us to look as a goron rolled up to where we were. As he uncurled from his shell, I recognized the spiky white hair and bushy white beard.
"Sensei!" I shouted and ran to him.
Daruk's eyes glistened as the found me, a broad grin appearing on his face. "Why, Zelda! Whatever are you doing here?" His strong hands lifted me up and spun me in the air. I laughed, feeling the hot air whoosh around me. Daruk carefully set me down.
"I am here on business." I replied and then turned to Link, "And this is my appointed knight, Link."
Daruk inspected Link, giving him a thorough once over. "He certainly is a little fellow. Was he really the best option to be your appointed knight?" Daruk asked, scratching the top of his head with one burly finger.
"I can assure you, Link is quite skilled. And I imagine, to a Goron, almost everyone appears little."
Daruk laughed, "I suppose you have a point." Daruk's eyes fell on Link, "Well as long as he is able to protect you, then I've no complaints."
I huffed, blowing a piece of hair out of my face and placed my hands on my hips, "I'm not defenseless! You trained me yourself, you should know that."
"Oh, I'm aware of Zelda." Daruk assured, placing his hands in front of him in a placating manner, "But I still want the best knights escorting you. Your protection is very important to me."
I folded my arms, a blush rising to my face, but I tried to brush it off, "I do appreciate your concern Daruk. But like I said, I am here on official business and need to discuss an important matter with you, Daruk."
"I'm all ears, Princess!" Daruk smiled at me and clapped me on the back, perhaps a little too forceable, for I stumbled forward slightly.
With haste, I informed Daruk of my mission and what I had discussed with Donos, his younger brother. Finally I came to the champion bit, "So you see, I would like to ask you to be the Goron Champion. No one is as strong and sturdy as you are, Daruk."
"Well when you put it that way, Zelda…. How can I refuse?" A wide grin appeared on his face and he let out a boisterous laugh, "Of course I'll be the Goron Champion; just let me at that Calamity Ganon, he won't know what hit him."
"Thank you Daruk." I replied, grateful that he was always there to back me up. Now all I had to do was give him the Power of Fire. I had already had the dream, which seemed to be the only prerequisite needed before I could give a champion their power. Now I just needed to wait for the right opportunity… usually one where I was alone with them. My eyes flickered to Link… hopefully he wouldn't put up too much of a fuss if I went to train alone with Daruk. Then again, every time I had gone out alone with a champion, something disastrous had happened… from lizalfos attacks, stumbling upon a hinox, and falling into the Great Rift.
I sighed, knowing I did not have a good track record and Link was not keen on letting me venture without him after everything that had happened. He could be very overprotective at times, at least in my opinion.
"In the meantime, why don't the two of you come with me?" Daruk said to Link and I. "Came to report we took care of the fire-breath lizalfos in the Northern Mines, but I wanted to do a quick patrol to make sure there weren't any lingering about. They can be rather sneaky. Figured you two could join me."
I shrugged, "It would be an opportunity for Link to see some of Eldin. He's never been here."
Link arched an eyebrow but then nodded his head, seeming to agree. "Well then, let's get going. Wasting daylight sitting around here." Daruk exclaimed, already walking down the incline that led to the base of the city.
Swiftly I said my goodbyes to Donos and then ran after Daruk, Link tailing me. Luckily when a Goron wasn't in their ball form, they were pretty easy to catch up to. "Where are we patrolling?" I asked, wondering if Daruk would take us up to the Northern Mines or perhaps around the molten lakes.
"We'll be scouting the path that goes up to Death Mountain. Those oversized lizards like to sneak past Goron City and use the path here to escape to the Southern Mine. They love to cause mayhem in our mines."
"Or maybe they're just attracted to all the people at the mines?" I offered.
"Eh, either way they have to be dealt with." Daruk led up a pathway carved into the rocks that surrounded the city and then we were walking on top of the archway that was the entrance to Goron town. The archway connected to the outcropping of rocks on the other side of the city, leading directly onto a path that led all the way up to Death Mountain. I looked up at the formidable mountain; today it looked more ominous than normal, the red glow coming from it seemed deeper to me, almost crimson, like blood.
We walked along, passing by the hot springs next to Goron City, two Gorons soaking in the steaming water. "See any lizalfos scurry this way?" Daruk asked, as we passed by. The two Gorons shook their heads no, however I doubted the would notice any lizalfos slinking off judging by how relaxed they were, oblivious to the rest of the world.
Still, Daruk trudged onward, taking us all the way to the bridge that led to Death Mountain. As we stopped in front of it, Daruk scratched his forehead, "Well I guess we got all of them." I nodded, my eyes fixed on the bridge. I heard hefty footsteps walking towards me and then Daruk was at my side, "Been awhile since ya traveled up good ole' Death Mountain."
I grimaced, "It has." And I'd prefer to keep it that way. I was all too aware of the bubbling magma all around me and the boiling rivers that flowed down the mountain.
"Well why don't we take a venture up there tomorrow?" Daruk said, "I've been itching to do some training and since your visit, it would be the perfect time to train with my pupil."
Trying to think of some excuse, I wracked my brain. It wasn't that I didn't want to train with my Sensei, but rather I didn't want to go up Death Mountain. The name itself was a reason to avoid it. But then I recalled that I had to give Daruk the Power of Fire, and every time I had given a champion their power previously, I had been alone with them… and in somewhat precarious situations.
I sighed, "Alright, but you'll have to convince Link." I said, glancing at the alert knight, who was surveilling our surroundings.
"Ah, he's the cautious type. Well no need to worry; Sensei Daruk will take care of it." Daruk winked at me, a smirk playing at his lips.
I shook my head, not bothering to ask. Just as I turned around to head back to Goron City, a loud squawk sounded and two red lizalfos jumped over the rock ledge to our right, metal armor adorned and weapons ready. One had a sword, while the other a drillshaft.
In a blink of an eye, Link was ready, drawing his blade. Daruk and I followed behind him, Daruk swinging his oversized claymore from his back, while I shoved my hands into my brass knuckles. I had left my bow and arrows behind at the stables, since they would combust in the Eldin region. I really did have to invest in a steel bow… but then I would also have to get metal arrows as well… It really was more a hassle than it was worth. But perhaps there was something to invent to fix this problem I had.
I tucked the idea in the recesses of my mind, focusing back to the two lizalfos charging at us. However before I could do anything, Link and Daruk had squared off against the lizalfos, Link charging to meet the one lizalfos, while Daruk cut his off, making him come to a stop. Link quickly parried away the lizalfos sword, sending it flying into the air. It landed with a clatter a few paces away. Then quick as lightning, he lashed out with his balde, slicing clean through the Lizalfos's neck. The creature spasmed several times as it fell to the ground and then laid still.
As this was occurring, Daruk took a stance across his opponent, the lizalfos eyeing Daruk carefully. There was enough distance between them, that neither the drillshaft nor Daruk's claymore would reach the other. Thus the lizalfos opened its fanged maw and spit out a wave of flames. Expecting this, Daruk brought his claymore up in a defensive maneuver, hunkering behind it while the flames lapped at the large sword. The lizalfos kept breathing fire, trying to dispose of his opponent. However, Daruk inched closer and closer to the lizalfos, staying behind his claymore which protected the less hardy areas of his body, which weren't as resistant to fire.
Then, once close enough, Daruk ran full force at the lizalfos, making the beast shut it's mouth and raise it's drillshaft. However it was too slow and Daruk collided with the scaly monster, sending him flying. The lizalfos landed at Link's feet, who had just killed his opponent. With a quick motion, Link descended his sword into the lizalfos's chest, instantly killing him.
I stopped in my tracks, dropping my hands, which had instinctively gone up in a fighting pose. I frowned, my eyes glancing between the two males… both had handled the situation before I could do anything. I tried to ignore the annoyance rising in my chest, and walked over to where they were standing.
Daruk placed a hand on Link's shoulder, "Impressive. Who knew such a little guy could be so strong." He smacked Link on the back, making Link stumble forward.
"I told you he was skilled." I said to Daruk.
"No kidding!" Daruk answered. "I got an idea, how about ya join my boys for some training tomorrw? They could use a good ole' challenge." Daruk winked at me.
Link contemplated for a few seconds and then nodded, a faint smile on his face.
"Then it's settled." Daruk grinned. "Now let's get back to the City. I bet Donos will have a nice feast brewing for us. It's not everyday we have royalty visit."
I gasped, "You didn't!" I knew all too well how much the Gorons loved to celebrate as well as how… rowdy things could get.
"Got to celebrate the little things. Rock roasts for all!" Daruk said and began to head back to Goron City before I could say another word.
I huffed and followed Daruk. It was going to be a lively evening.
I sprawled out on my bed, staring at the stone ceiling. Once we got back to the city, Daruk had been right; Donos had ordered for a feast, which sent everyone into a frenzy. The Gorons quickly finished their work early and then set to work on preparations for the feast, hanging lights, stoking the fires, seasoning their rock roasts, as well as hunting some ostriches for those of us who didn't eat their beloved rock roasts.
While everyone worked, Daruk led us to their guest quarters, which were actually underneath the city and made from specially forged stone that prevented the heat from leaking in. Thus while in these guest quarters, we didn't need to use fireproof elixirs and could take a reprieve from the extreme heat. Even with the elixirs, it was toasty outside.
Daruk had given Link and I separate rooms next to each other. The rooms were fairly small, containing a bed, a nightstand, and a torch stand with a chunk of luminous rock in it to light the room. The entire underground area was lit with chunks of luminous rocks. It provided a bright blue glow, which was rather pretty.
Laying on my bed, I felt my body relax. Although it wasn't very late, I felt as if I could go to sleep already. Then again, my mind didn't really feel tired, just my body. I exhaled, trying to prepare myself for the feast as well as the training on Death Mountain tomorrow. At least Link wouldn't put up a fuss over it as he would be busy training with the Gorons. While he did that, Daruk and I would slip away. A part of me felt a little guilty about it because so far every time I had gone off on my own with a champion, something disastrous had happened. And I dreaded what unfortunate event would happen on Death Mountain.
"That Mountain will be the Death of me." I murmured. It was literally in the name… why go tempting fates? And yet here I was.
I let my thoughts drift for awhile, my mind wandering in and out of consciousness as I dozed. A knock on my door fully roused me. Opening it, I found Link. He pointed upwards and said, "The feast is ready. Daruk said to come get you."
"Where you helping them?" I inquired.
Link nodded, "Yeah, they didn't really know how to cook fresh bird. They asked me and I went up to help them."
I closed my eyes and brought a hand up to my face. How hard was it to cook a bird? Then again… I probably shouldn't be the one to criticize when it came to cooking. "Alright. Thank you for doing that, Link." I sighed, "I hope you're ready for this."
"Ready for what?"
I smiled morbidly, "You will see just how rambunctious the Gorons can get. Also, avoid the Flaming Whiskey. They will definitely offer it to you. Stick with Ashen Ale or Mags Mead. Everything else will kill you… one way or the other."
Link widened his eyes in surprise, "Kill you?"
"Not literally." I reassured, undoing my braid and tying it up in a high pony.
"How do you know this?" Link inquired.
I frowned. "My other knights experienced Goron alcohol and felt the full effect. Although I did try Flaming Whiskey once… Daruk said it was a right of passage."
"And?" Link asked, curious and concerned at the same time.
"It felt like my mouth and throat were on fire." I answered.
"Ah."
"Yep. So drink at your own risk." With that I walked past Link, drinking another Fireproof Elixir as I did so.
As Link and I exited the underground portion of the city, we found ourselves in what appeared to be a completely different City. There were lights strewn throughout the city, hanging from houses, rocks, archways - all of it creating a dazzling display that lit up the city despite the darkening sky. Fires were roaring to life, grills upon them covered in rock roasts. A band of drummers was situated at the center of the city, drums of all sizes at the ready. A group of Gorons with oboes, bassons, and didgeridoos was coming to join them, ready to add some deep baritones to the pounding of the drums.
Metal decorations hung from the houses and lines suspended over the city, the metal twinkling in the light. The decorations varied from spherical orbs with crevices in it and long streamers twirling in the wind, all painted brightly. With all the colorful pieces and lights everywhere, it almost looked like a kaleidoscope.
The Gorons themselves were dressed up as well, their typical loincloths replaced by colorful loincloths or kilts even. Some wore belts with many little trinkets or frills hanging from them, every step they took making the trinkets jingle. Other Gorons had shawls or scarves on, each one beautiful and elaborate. And every Goron had some kind of jewelry on, from simple bracelets and earrings to necklaces encrusted with rubies, sapphires, topaz, and diamonds. Some even had a slew of necklaces and bracelets on, clinking together as the merrily walked along.
Beyond the colorful display was the noise. The drums and wind instruments played along filling the air with intense, deep music, but there was also a constant stream of chattering and singing, Gorons breaking into song spontaneously all throughout the city. Gorons were cheerfully dancing and clanking brimming mugs of whiskey and ale together in a toast.
The Gorons certainly were a lively bunch. I had experienced several Goron feasts in the past and they all were loud and festive. It wasn't my normal scene, but I couldn't help but smile as I entered the fray of the feast. Normally such situations at the castle would make me uncomfortable and I would fake a smile to get through them. However the Goron feasts were different. There were no expectations to uphold, one simply had to enjoy themselves. It wasn't something I had thought I was in the mood for today, but as I looked around me, it felt right.
I turned to Link, who was still gazing around him, his eyes wide open. "Gorons know how to celebrate." I said, gaining Link's attention.
Link nodded, "I can see that. Although it doesn't really look like we fit in."
I giggled, knowing Link had no idea what to expect. "Oh they'll fix that."
Link arched an eyebrow in curiosity, but before I could explain, right on cue, Daruk strode over to us, a brightly colored red scarf wrapped around his neck. He wore a red kilt with gold and black embellishments and had at least twenty bracelets on and ten necklaces, some containing big polished ores, while others were a simple band with one glimmer gem. "I'm glad I found you." Daruk boomed, his eyes shining in delight. "Here." He said, handing a bundle to both Link and I. "Don't have a lot of clothing that will fit you, but this should work." I took the bundle from Daruks hands and wrapped the blue and purple shawl around me. Then I threw three necklaces over my head, the beads clinking together. The shawl was big and felt more like a cape, hanging all the way down to my knees.
I glanced at Link, and held back a laugh as I saw him wearing a grass skirt dyed the color of a rainbow. He also had three necklaces on. Seeing me looking at him, Link met my gaze and smiled, "How do I look?" He asked mischievously.
I giggled and then saw Daruk take a step forward, scratching his head in confusion. "I think I switched your guy's clothes."
Link and I both laughed. "I think it's ok." I assured him. "I like my cape." I lifted my arms up while holding the shawl, so it looked like I had keese wings.
"And I've never felt cuter." Link replied putting a hand on his hip as if he was trying to imitate me.
Daruk let out a hearty laugh. "Ah little hylians. Come, come. Let us gather around." We quickly followed Daruk to where all the Gorons were gathering, a pile of rock roasts at the center. Donos was next to them, dressed in an orange and yellow loincloth with a belt that had lots of little frills and small bells on it. He had even more jewelry on than Daruk and his braided beard was interwoven with orange and yellow ribbon.
"Tonight we have prepared a glorious feast, my brethren." Donos started as he saw Daruk, Link, and I join the group. "Our Princess Zelda has paid us a visit and to honor her presence we will celebrate." I blushed as he pointed to me, making all the Gorons glance at me, some giving a quick shout or cheer. "So let the feast begin!" With that all the Gorons let out a joyous cry and then made their way to the pile of rock roasts, grabbing one or two and quickly moving away so the next Goron could grab a roast.
Link pulled me away and led me to a table nearby which had two plates of seared bird meat on it. I grabbed one plate and quickly made my way over to Daruk, who was sitting down along with his younger brother and two other Gorons. Link and I joined them and began to eat our meal, the meat tender and spicy, likely seasoned with Goron spice.
"You should come visit more often, Princess Zelda" One of the Gorons said through a mouthful of rock roast. "Been awhile since our last Feast."
"It has!" Donos boasted, lifting a mug of Flaming Whiskey. "Someone get these Hylians something to drink!" He requested as he noticed Link and I didn't have any mugs of alcohol, a must during any Goron Feast.
"What ya want?" Another Goron called.
Donos arched an eyebrow at me, "Either an Ashen Ale or a Mags Mead for both of us." I said, knowing those were the only safe drinks.
Donos laughed, "Forget you Hylians have no tolerance."
"Wait, Donos." Daruk said, holding up his hand. "Let's have Zelda try the new stuff."
My eyes widened, knowing this was how all their attempts to get me to try one of their burning alcoholic beverages started. "Oh no." I said sternly, folding my arms.
"No need to worry, Zelda." Daruk said, holding up his arms. "It's actually something I think you'll like. See, we developed a wine, which I know is more of your preference."
"Oh." I said, curious.
"Yep, we call it Smoldering Sake. It's not as… fiery as our beers and liquors."
"Well…." I said, drawing the word out, "I guess I could try it."
"Excellent!" Donos cried, "Bring us the Smoldering Sake bottle! And a mug of Mags Mead and Granite Groggs!"
Within minutes, two mugs of spirits were placed in front of us, Links a bright amber color and mine a deep burgundy. I took a sip of the sake, taking in the astringent flavors. It had a deep flavor, as well as hints of smoke and wildberries. I decided that it was a good sipping drink.
As we finished our meal, the Gorons began to dance and sing. More spirits were passed around, the liquids sloshing about as they went from hand to hand. The Gorons next to us continued to talk and laugh, asking Link and I questions throughout.
Daruk took a gulp of his mead, setting the mug down with a thud. "That reminds me of a time Zelda and I were training. We came across a group of travelers, a man and his two sons, as we were heading back to Hyrule Castle. The elder son, who was a few years older than Zelda, made a snide comment about girls fighting. Well she didn't like that and full on clobbered him. Ended up knocking him clean out. The Dad and other son were so stunned, all they could do was apologize profusely for the boy's rudeness." Daruk laughed. "Imagine, being apologized too for knocking someone out."
I folded my arms over my chest. "He started it." I defended myself.
This only caused the Gorons to laugh harder. "There was another time," Daruk began, "Zelda and I were training near the military base-"
"I think that's enough reminiscing, Sensei." I cut him off.
"Ah but it's quite the story. You certainly got in your fair share of scuffles as a kid." Daruk took a large gulp of his ale.
"Haha, she's quite the spitfire!" Donos laughed, slapping his knee, "Not your typical Princess at all. Definitely shows that she was trained by Gorons, all that fire in her blood."
I brought a hand to my forehead and muttered, "You make me sound unreasonable and hot-headed." I just had a bad temper, that was all. And as a kid, almost everything would set me off.
"You ever been subject to Zelda's temper?" Daruk asked Link, fixing him with a questioning look.
Link looked at me, and I leered at him, signaling him not to add fuel to their fire. Link looked away sheepishly, torn on what to say. Donos and Daruk erupted into laughter, "That's answer enough!" Donos exclaimed.
I glowered as they laughed, not appreciating the jabs, although I knew they didn't mean any harm. To Gorons, these qualities weren't bad or shamed. "Say," Daruk said after he stopped laughing, "You've got some real skill, Link. Glad the Princess has someone like you at her side. I was a little skeptical at first, but you have my full approval!" Daruk lifted his mug high, toasting Link.
Donos chuckled, grabbing his elder brother's arm, "It sounds like you're giving him your approval to marry Zelda!" He cackled and slapped the ground.
Daruk arched an eyebrow, his gaze shifting between Link and I. I felt my face heat up at Donos's comment and it only worsened as Daruk grinned. "I think he'd make a fine King of Hyrule. We need more knights as rulers anyways! You have my full blessing!" He lifted his mug and let out a booming laugh. "To Link and Zelda!"
"To Link and Zelda!" Several Gorons nearby cheered.
If it was possible, I was sure my face was the same color as the lava flowing down Death Mountain. I dared not look at Link and instead jumped to my feet and pointed sternly at Daruk, who was still wracked with laughter. "Se-Sensei!" I stuttered out. "You can't say such things!"
Daruk waved his hand at me, "Oh tis a joke Zelda. You're too young to get marry anyways."
"Sensei." There was a warning in my voice.
"He." He gave me an apologetic grin. "How about a dance, Zelda? Finish your sake and let's join in on the dancing. Can't sit the night away with this lively music!"
I looked down at my mug of wine, still half way full. But at that moment I would have done almost anything to get off the topic of me getting married. Thus I grabbed the mug of wine and chugged. Daruk followed my lead and we both set our glasses down at the same time.
"Lead the way, Princess." Daruk instructed and I stood and began to walk away and towards the Gorons dancing. I faced my Sensei, and then we began to dance, dancing however we pleased. I normally was quite embarrassed when it came to dancing and would refrain at events at the castle. But Goron dancing was different. The music was wild and unpredictable, making it hard to dance to. Thus, the Gorons danced however they pleased, some swaying back and forth, while others hopped and shimmied. The wine had also probably helped me loosen up a little.
Daruk and I danced along; eventually Daruk reached out his hand towards mine, and I took it, grabbing ahold of his bulging forearm with my other. We kept a quick pace and suddenly I was spinning. Daruk pulled me back and I laughed, finding I was enjoying myself. We kept going, Daruk spinning me around and even flipping me over his arm. More Gorons joined around us and Daruk and I shuffled around, switching partners and dancing on our own or across from another Goron. I felt a sway in my head, as if my brain was floating. Gone were the serious thoughts and all I wanted to do was enjoy myself in this moment. I spun around, in between partners, my shawl flowing out around me in what felt like a majestic swoosh.
And then a hand found my wrist and the lower part of my ribcage. However these were not the hands of a Goron. I looked to my side to see Link standing slightly behind me. "Care to dance?" He asked, a soft smile on his lips.
"Of course." I replied, finding his eyes captivating. I turned around and grabbed his hand and shoulder, finding his hand fit nicely in mine. Link quickly began to lead me in a waltz, much to my surprise. "You can dance?" I laughed.
"My mother taught me." Link said, smiling. He was also having a good time. It was hard not to enjoy yourself at a Goron Feast.
"You're pretty good." I said as he spun me around.
"Thanks." He said. We continued to dance and made small talk as we did so. For some reason he seemed more handsome in that moment, dancing with me in a rainbow grass skirt. I giggled.
"What?" Link grinned.
I shook my head. "It's nothing."
"Is that so, Princess?" Link smirked at me.
"Oh stop." I said and rolled my eyes, "Zelda is fine."
"Whatever you say, Princess." He grinned, causing me to glare at him.
"You're ridiculous." I told him, knowing I had said the same thing several times before.
"Yet you keep me around." He replied as normal.
"Yes." I repeated, abstaining from my normal 'Like I have a choice.' remark. "I like having you around." Had I really said that out loud?
"Is that so?" Link said in a teasing voice.
I looked at him, meeting his sparking blue orbs. It was then I realized we had stopped dancing, just standing still in a sea of dancing Gorons. "Yes." I repeated.
It was then I noticed how close we were, his face only a few inches from mine. All I had to do was take a small step forward and close the distance between us… just a few inches and…
I sighed, my eyes falling from his eyes down to his lips briefly and then closing.
You're a Princess. Link's a knight. It would never work. I told myself as I leaned into Link, resting my head on his shoulder. My arms wrapped around Link's torso, feeling his firm muscles underneath his blue tunic. The beads on his necklace dug into my chest, but I ignored them, needing to feel his body against mine. "I know." I whispered to myself.
"Zelda?" Link said uncertainty.
"I'm ok." I said. "I'm just happy."
Link didn't respond for a moment but then I felt his arms wrap around me and I relaxed into him. Just because he's a knight, that doesn't change how I feel about him.
The two of us stood there, oblivious to everything but each other. I wished things could stay like this forever.
