"Major Song!" The soldier saluted Song Zhilan when he reached the crime scene. He was dressed in his military uniform as he got down the jeep.
He had been on medical leave but last night he was called back to duty even though he was not completely healed. His presence was needed to investigate this case of a hotel bombing where many people were found dead. They couldn't know the identity of the people as many of them were burnt beyond recognition.
Song Zhilan nodded his head as he was led inside the military hospital. He would have used his wheelchair if not for the fact that he was wearing his uniform.
"What's progress?" Song Zhilan asked as they walked ahead. His sharp Phoenix eyes are hidden behind the shades. His aura stifling and his gait proud and brave that of a lion. In the military uniform, he looked imposing and regal.
"We found an injured woman and she is getting treated here, " The soldier replied. "About the others, our team had been trying to confirm the death of people who booked rooms in that hotel. What's shocking in this case is how someone had turned on the fire alarm before bombing the hotel. Almost all the guests and staff had left the hotel except for the floor 41 which had been booked by a single person. We couldn't find the identity of the person who booked the entire floor and I don't think we ever will. All the data has been destroyed."
Song Zhilan nodded. His doubts were true. The hotel was bombed just to kill one person. Who would be this person that the entire hotel was bombed just to kill him?
Was he a minister?
A businessman?
A don?
Just who was he?
He knew that he would not be able to find the identity of the man this easily. If these people could bomb an entire hotel just to kill one man, what could they not do?
"Captain Chen, the patient in room number 102 woke up, " The nurse came running to inform the army officer.
"Major, would you like to investigate the woman?" Captain Chen asked. "She was heavily injured in the fire after all."
Song Zhilan ended up nodding his head. If the woman had anything to do with the bombing incident, he couldn't let her escape. He had to solve this case because he had a feeling that this case had any relation to the one where he got injured. Perhaps, he would be able to save the brave girl who saved his and his team's life.
"This room…" Captain Chen showed him the way to the room of the injured woman. He opened the door and saw the doctors asking the woman some basic questions.
"What's your name?" The doctor asked the woman.
The woman on the bed looked at the doctor with drowsiness and whispered, "I don't… I don't know."
"Can you remember something about yourself?" The doctor asked the girl for the nth time but each time she gave the same reply.
She looked confused and scared looking at all of them. Their suspicions turned real when the girl couldn't remember a thing about herself. He had a talk with other doctors after seeing her CT scan that there was a chance that she might not remember anything after waking up after all her head was hit by a hard thing.
The doctor gave instructions to the nurse before leaving the room. When he exited the door, he saw military officers standing outside the door.
"The patient lost her memories. We can't say if the reason for amnesia is an injury to her head or the trauma, " The doctor informed the officers. "She is lost and confused. I would suggest you to not remind her of the traumatic incident in order to recover her memories."
"Can I ask her some basic questions?" Song Zhilan asked. His gaze was on the woman lying on the hospital bed. Not for a moment, he dare to blink his eyes. What if he blinked his eyes and she was gone once again? The girl he could not find even after raiding several countries was lying on the hospital bed before his eyes.
"Just don't push her too hard, " The doctor advised. He was afraid that pushing the girl to remember things only to cooperate with the military investigation would have a bad effect on her mental health of the girl.
Song Zhilan nodded his head. As he took a step towards the patient room, his subordinates followed him but he signalled them to let him go inside alone. His subordinates thought that the Major didn't want to scare away the girl and so they were told to wait outside.
No one could understand the turbulence caused in Major's heart.
He entered the patient's room with heavy footsteps. His legs softened and for a moment, he felt as if he could not take a step ahead. It was not the ache and illness that weakened his legs but her intense grey eyes. They were so intense and beautiful that he felt as if he was back to the first time he saw her.
Even when death was knocking on his doors, he had found it hard to look away. This pair of intense grey eyes have always haunted his sleep.
He had been guilty all this while. Every night he would go to sleep with the regret that he got the woman killed who saved him and his team. He was so relieved that she was alive and well.
"Hello?" Song Zhilan greeted her as he pulled the chair near him and sat on it. "Do you recognise me?"
He waited and waited and waited for the reply but he received nothing.
