"The patron's instructions were exacting," you say. "Do you really think I would have written it this way otherwise?"
"I can't imagine that you would have," Diar says.
"So there you are."
"I suppose I could talk to Nichol for you," Diar says. "If he knows that we're all with you, that might help matters."
"Thank you," you say fervently.
You hold your breath while Nichol considers. At last he nods. "All right," he says. "We'll try it your way. Hopefully the quality of the production will offset the other problems."
"You won't regret this," you say, wringing his hand. "It's going to be great!" You certainly hope so, or it might be your last play.
