"I suppose you're right," you say to Drazha. "It's the only way to be sure."
Drawing a knife, you go in search of Barnaby, finding him alongside his daughter, near the barn where your horses are stabled. He turns to you with an easy smile, but as he meets your eyes, the smile drops.
"Run, girl!" he shouts, reaching for the knife that you now bring up, ready to strike. You slash the blade across his clutching hand before stabbing it into his side—once, twice, three times. You lower Barnaby to the ground, his blood staining the straw that covers the floor of the barn and look for Rose, but the girl has vanished.
"Is it done?" asks Drazha as you return to the cottage.
You say nothing and settle down on your sleeping roll, but sleep does not come easily tonight.
