A loud blaring noise rang out.
"What's that sound?" I mumbled sleepily.
I was woken up by a loud noise, but I didn't open my eyes or get out of bed. It was too early for my alarm to go off. It was like 6 in the morning and my alarm wasnt supposef to go off until 7:30. My mom probably reset it when I was sleeping.
"Wait a second... that's not the sound of my alarm but the sound of a fire alarm." I cried as I jumped out of the bed, fear gripping me by the throat. I ran down the stairs where I immediately saw my dad waving a towel across the smoke detector.
My shoulders sagged when I saw that it was just smoke and not actual fire.
"I'm so sorry, sweetie. Did I wake you up?" He said when he noticed my presence. When he moved out of the way, I saw that he had actually been cooking and now, whatever it was, was burnt to ashes.
"No, dad, you didn't wake me up." I said just so he wouldn't feel bad. "I'm glad you are okay. I was a bit worried because I heard the alarm go off." I walked closer to him to help him clean up.
"My love, I'm glad you're here." I turned and saw my mom rushing down the stairs lookong worried and terrified. "I heard the fire alarm go off and I went to your room, but I couldn't find you there. I panicked."
When she got to where I was, she threw her arms around me and hugged me.
"What were you doing?" she yelled at my dad, finally turning to him.
"I'm sorry dear, I was trying to make breakfast for the both of you before you wake up."
He was so honest and so crestfallen that I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. He had just wanted to surprise us with breakfast, which was really sweet of him, but ended up burning the whole thing.
My mom's face softened and she took his hands in hers. This time when she spoke, her voice was gentler. "Honey, you really didn't have to do that, you know. Next time you want to do something like this, always call so that I can assist you." She laughed, but not in a mocking way.
"It wouldn't have been a surprise if I had told you about it." He said quietly.
Then, I decided to step in. "Dad, you being here this early is a big surprise to us. So, I guess you did surprise us anyway."
I had not been expecting to see him at all. I honestly thought that he was going to come back maybe next month.
"Ariana's right. Why are you home this early?" My mom asked, finally taking note of that fact. The fire alarm had taken up all our thoughts that we almost forgot.
"The project got postponed because some goods were missing from the warehouse, and without them, we can't start the project. A meeting was held and we came to a conclusion to postpone the project." Dad explained.
He had mixed reactions. He looked both happy and sad at the same time. If I had to guess, the happiness was due to the fact that he got to spend more time with us, while he was sad because his project got postponed.
I couldn't help but wonder how they were going to deal with the stolen goods.
"It's okay my dear, everything will be alright." Mom assured him. Pointing at the stain on his shirt, she said, "Why don't you both go upstairs and freshen up and I will make breakfast for all of us?"
"Are you sure you don't need my help?" Dad asked her, and the only thing I could think of, was how I couldn't wait to go back to sleep.
She shook her head, smiling. "Don't worry about it."
My dad and I went up stairs to our individual rooms to get ready. I really wasn't happy about the fact that I was getting up so early. I mean, after that weird dream I had, I had barely been able to sleep and now, I was bring forced to get ready.
I had a quick shower, combed my hair, brushed my teeth, and since I had some time on my hands, I decided to put a little makeup on. Altogether, I looked good.
"Ariana, breakfast is ready." My mom yelled.
When I got down the stairs, I saw that my dad was already seated at the table. He mist have really missed Mom's delicious meals. And could I blame him? Mom was a good cook.
"Sit beside me, my dear." My dad said and I paused. I had just been about to sit a few chairs away from him. Pushing the chair back in, I sat on the chair closest to him.
"Here you go." My mom dropped several dishes on the table. She made eggs and toast. A simple breakfast that my dad had almost burned the house down while trying to make. I almost laughed.
"This is really nice." Dad spoke around a mouthful.
I wasn't that hungry, but it was obvious that my dad really wanted to spend time with us, so I decided to eat a little. After his sweet gesture of wanting to make us breakfast, it was the least I could do.
Dad took a sip of his orange juice. "How do you like your new school?"
"It's fine." I replied with a smile.
"I hope you aren't being troubled or anything." He asked in concern.
Was it obvious that something was going up with me? I was still thrown from that confusing dream I had. Was it visible to them?
"It's okay, really Dad. Don't worry about me. I mean, I am your daughter after all." I joked boastfully and he smiled.
"So tell me all about your first day."
Glad that he believed me, I told him about everything that happened today, leaving out some parts that weren't that important.
