The professor introduced himself after the three of them had entered his office.
"Glad to see you all doing fine and well, I see that you seem to be ready to get your Pokedex, well, fret not."
The professor moved towards one of the corners of his office that had a shelf hanging on the wall, showcasing different models of the Pokedex which had a sleek pocket design, colored with black stripes that ran across its red structure.
His room had multiple open windows on the sides where one could see the ocean view and since it was on the highest floor of the building, you could overlook the whole compound and further if you were to stand next to one of the windows.
At the center of his room, one could see a huge machine of sorts containing three Pokeballs, and it didn't take long for the trio to realize that their starters were currently in those Pokeballs.
As the professor turned to face the trio after grabbing their respective Pokedexes, he noticed their longing gazes towards the station that contained the starter Pokemons.
He chuckled slightly at this as the trio turned their attention to him and saw that he was holding what they assumed to be a Pokedex.
"These right here are the latest models of the Pokedex, you can look up pre-registered Pokemon, and we patched a map function that shows real-time weather depending on your location and also has a Pokenav software installed, so you can talk with anyone from your contact list, don't worry, it's also connected to the landline service, so you can call your family anytime you want."
Red and Green were shocked at this, they weren't expecting the Pokedex to evolve so much within the short span of time since its release 3 years ago, but nonetheless, they were all excited about the aspect of the new features it had.
"Now, as for why I want the three of you to receive these, I figure you guys are already aware?", Oak asked while checking their expressions.
"Yes, professor."
"Ummm"
Seeing his two friends reply so quickly, Blue lightly chuckled and soon nodded along although he had already gotten his Pokedex when it was first released, in fact, he had played a major role in the development of the Pokedex specifically, as it was him who bought up the idea of including the map system and the Pokenav interface.
The professor seemed to be pondering for a while, which made the duo feel quite tense, but that didn't last for long as the professor broke out a smile and handed them each a Pokedex.
"Good, I like your spirit!!", Oak said while having a content smile on his face and saw that his grandson had the same expression as well.
Red and Green let loose a bit after getting the professor's approval and looked at the device in their hands. It had a horizontal flip-mechanic that opened and closed up with a mini screen embedded on the front where they could see the status of the weather after turning it on with a switch on the side. As they flipped open the interior, they could see two screens on either side that were connected seamlessly in the middle.
Red was honestly impressed with the ergonomics that went into creating this design and even more so with how they managed to connect the two screens so well in the middle where it had the most movement.
Green, on the other hand, seemed to be content with the fact that she had gotten her Pokedex, and was fiddling around with its function.
After turning it on, he could see a long and detailed list of a variety of Pokemon but noticed that the list had a few question marks next to some Pokemon that had not yet been identified, and he guessed that the professor's request most likely had to do with this matter.
Whilst he was lost in his thoughts, he heard a chime sound and saw that he got a notification, he pressed on the notification icon on the top-most corner on the right side of the screen and saw a message indicating he had received his trainer ID.
A second later, he heard a similar chime from his side and saw Green tilting her head.
"I see that you both seem to have gotten your trainer IDs."
They both tilted their heads at this, wondering what the professor was talking about.
Before the professor could speak though, Blue took the initiative and started explaining what the trainer ID entailed.
"The trainer ID is a license card of sorts, you can share your ID with your friends who can save your ID in their contacts, and you need to have a trainer ID to participate in the Pokemon League, you can also use it as a credit card to store your money in, pretty neat, I know."
The duo turned to look at Blue with admiration after the revelation and had stars sparkling in their eyes.
Blue only shrugged at this but couldn't seem to hide his smug expression, whilst Oak only shook his head with a partial sigh.
Seeing that they all seemed to have gotten used to their Pokedex, Oak said with a bit of emphasis on his voice when addressing them.
"Now if you don't mind, I have a request to ask the three of you."
After hearing his serious tone, the three paid attention to his words as they had a guess to what his request was going to be.
"As you may have seen, although the Pokedex has a relative amount of info on a number of Pokemon, it still doesn't have the region's whole Pokemon species data. And I would like for the three of you to be the leading trainers who fill up the Pokedex."
Red and Green who half expected it were calm when the professor revealed his request, and they were more than hyped to take it on. Blue already knew this so he just slightly nodded.
As the duo nodded at the professor with anticipation, the professor continued on with his speech.
"Of course, since this is the third model of the Pokedex, it doesn't have all that much left to be collected since the previous two generations have gathered a relatively large amount of data on the species of Pokemon in the Kanto region, but nonetheless, not every one of the data is accurate to real-life and we're planning on sending out a few batches of researches who will be doing their own research after you've filed in the discovery of the new species of Pokemon."
Seeing that he had grabbed their attention, he went further ahead with his message.
"But even then, I would like for the three of you to be careful when traversing unknown locations and when dealing with unidentified Pokemon, as they can be dangerous since we do not yet know everything about Pokemon, even with the past decade of research. "
The three of them nodded with heavy heads at this as they knew that, although now that they would have a Pokemon, it still didn't rule out the possibility of getting harmed by a much stronger wild Pokemon, so they still had to be careful when dealing with tougher opponents.
After seeing their looks of understanding, the professor decided it was time for them to get their starters.
"Well then, have you decided on your starter yet?
The trio nodded with enthusiasm as they had been anticipating this moment for a long time.
"Come on ahead then."
The professor led the trio to the station that contained the three starters they had been eying from time to time ever since entering the office. He tapped on a button on each of the three Pokeballs and soon, three Pokemon of differing shapes and personalities came out of the balls.
On the right was Bulbasaur, the grass-type Pokemon that stood in front of Green, who it noticed was staring at it with joy and acceptance. Green jumped towards Bulbasaur before it could do anything else and started cuddling with it, the Bulbasaur although confused, seemed to know that its new master didn't have any bad intentions and let her do as she wished.
In the middle was Squirtle, the water-type Pokemon that stood face-face with Blue. It looked up at the person who it knew was going to be its master and was filled with joy when Blue picked it up and was staring at it like a proud father.
And at last, on the left was Charmander, the fire-type Pokemon who looked towards its two friends, who were happily bonding with their new masters, and turned to its master who seemed to be frozen as he stood still while looking at Charmander with a melancholy expression. It soon noticed its master's feelings and headed towards it and rubbed its head dotingly on its master's legs which seemed to have woken him up from his trance, and soon bent down and started petting her head, as the Charmander squealed in bliss.
On the side, Oak looked at this scene and felt nostalgic about the time when he got his first ever Pokemon, and felt a pat on his shoulder, as he turned to look behind, he saw his trusty Dragonite looking back at him with a happy expression.
