Chapter 13 - A Broken Promise

POV-Elva Windslay

This world that I grew up in has always been the deepest dark. Mankind evolved, defying all odds, sacrificing their own kin to conquer the greater path.

In this harsh and unsafe world of ours, I was always shrouded in happiness, and because of that, I always considered myself the luckiest woman.

My hubby, Adrian, showered me with all the affection and love, even more than I deserved.

And amidst my happy life, I gave birth!

As I held my lovely twin babies, they became my universe. And the core of my existence began to revolve around their center.

Because of my babies, my happy world has been converted into a fairyland, where stars glimmer, fulfilling all of my fantasies, and everything I've ever desired is now within my grasp.

For the past few months, I have adored spending time with my babies, teaching them new things, and seeing them scream, sleep, and laugh. And hearing when they say "mum" was the best part...

They started to speak and soon began to walk on their own two feet, and now they can even run at a high speed. It makes me happy to see them grow up so quickly.

My daughter, at the young age of three months, has even awakened two distinct genotypes, and she can even use them efficiently. By the world's standards, she can be considered a top-notch genius or simply a freak.

I am grateful to them both for being born to me and for allowing me to be a mother.

And I promise I will devote my life to becoming a lovely mother that both of my babies can be proud of!

Today is the first time my kids have been exposed to the vastness of our globe. They experienced these marvelous wonderlands, alluring horizons, enticing landscapes, and boundless blue oceans with their own eyes.

They enjoyed riding on Blacky's back and did not get frightened or cry.

We played near the shore, enjoying the prevailing waves, dousing each other with cold water, and laughing frantically together.

And amidst our playtime, my hubby, Adrian, started to play with my body...

Initially, I tried to resist seeing our kids in my line of sight, but my body's reaction became blazing hot, my knees buckled, my brain shut down, and I helplessly landed in my husband's arms.

Maybe because we are looking after our kids day and night, we have less time to spare for a lovely night, or perhaps it's just the effect of the beach making me thirsty for my hubby—Adrian.

We sneak out away from our kids, leaving them in the care of our trusted bird—blacky, in order to get some passionate alone time.

Time passed, as our small wooden house on Windslay Island filled with our loud moans. Sweat trickled down on my bare body, leaving me all drained yet with a countenance painted with rosy red and a wide smile.

I forcefully dragged my exhausted body out of my husband's embrace and dressed up in a hurry.

My babies must be tired and hungry after playing on the beach. It's an appropriate time to introduce some solid meals to them. With a nod, I tightened my silky white hair and started cooking.

"Adrian, go look after our kids," I urged sharply, glancing at my husband's ready-to-sleep stance. Under my piercing gaze, he reluctantly gets out of bed and ties up his clothes.

But before he could go outside to look after our kids, an ear-piercing roar loud enough to shake the entire house resonated throughout. With a sound wave, the ground shook, windows cracked, and the food I lovingly made for my kids spilled on the floor mat.

An awful premonition sprang into my thoughts, and my heart pounded with the speed of light as I, along with Adrian, rushed toward the source of chaos.

I unlock the door lock with a knock.

I felt a shiver go down my spine as I took in the scene in front of me. My heart throbbed in pain so hard that I forgot to breathe.

My son was lying on the ground inside a puddle of the bloody pool, his hands and legs twisted at an abnormal angle, his body covered with burn marks and severe scars, with blood oozing out of it in streams, and his beautiful white hairs were scorched and no longer in existence.

And my daughter, her clothes soaked in blood, tears falling from her cheek nonstop, hugged my injured son with an ironclad grip as if he were breathing his last breath.

And Blacky was standing behind our kids, his wings spread out and his neck facing down as if he was apologizing.

Extreme terror flooded my soul as my body started quivering uncontrollably. I wanted to move and approach them, but my legs went on strike.

But as I caught sight of my son throwing a glance in my direction, with a heavy heart, I rushed towards him, carefully taking his hands and checking on his injuries.

Tears started to roll down my cheeks; my body quivered with despair, and all kinds of negative thoughts surfaced in my mind.

Why? Why? Why?

Why does this have to happen?

All of this is my fault. I foolishly left my children for a brief moment of pleasure.

I promise them that I will be a mother in whom they can both take great pride. And I broke that promise...

The feeling of guilt left me in a state of trauma from within. My face became pale. I wanted to talk, but only managed to stutter in a trembling and inaudible voice.

Seeing my horrified look, my son glanced at me. He looked into my eyes as if he was comforting me. Looking at his burned face, my heart hurts, and seeing the pain, he throws me a lovely smile.

Followed by the thud as his hands dropped to the ground, his eyes rolled outwards, and he lost consciousness as if he had breathed his last breath...

Looking at our son's dreadful condition, a loud scream left my husband's throat. With rage, he activated his wind genotype, followed by all the surrounding wind gushing towards him.

The trees started to sway and make a swishing noise. Some of them collapsed, while others shattered. A few stones and specks of dust surged up with the wind, creating the tempest, turning a sunny day into a stormy night.

Amidst the storm, Adrian extends his hand as he guides the wind, too compressed at a single point. The wind compressed, storing tremendous energy in a single place, followed by Adrian taking a step forward as he aimed all the stored wind energy right in the direction of the bird, Blacky.

Boom!

A myriad of compressed wind was released with a booming sound, and it rushed towards the bird, Blacky, with incredible speed.

Crash!

With a wind force, Blacky crashed into the ground, creating a huge cuddle. My vision became unclear as dust climbed into the air.

And amidst all this chaos, the wind barrier conjured by my husband protected my children and me.

The power of the wind caused Blacky's body to start bleeding profusely. He appeared to be crying, since his eyes were wet, either from pain or a feeling of guilt.

Adrian took a hefty stride toward Blacky, looking into the latter's eyes with a penetrating glare as he said, in a voice filled with terror, "How? Why? What happened to my son? Have you harmed him? Why is he in such a horrible state?"

Even though Blacky is a member of our family, and we have always treated him like one of our own, he amounts to nothing when it comes to our own flesh and blood.

Yes, it was careless of me to leave my children under Blacky's protection.

What caused their injuries? Is Blacky the one who attacked them?

As much as I was dying to know the answers, I knew this should not be our priority first.

I cast a glance at an irate Adrian, who was tormenting Blacky while extracting answers. I snapped with a loud cry, "Enough, Adrian! We must attend to our son's medical needs first. "
