Chapter 2 - The last glimpse of hope

Lina knew nobody would notice her disappearance. I mean who would care if she was gone ? Her, a worthless nobody. She didn't even have a family to return to, her parents both died in a car accident about 5 years ago. She witnessed their death with her own eyes, because she was sitting in the back seat of that same car.

She was an orphan, and she had no brothers or sisters to keep her company. She was also excluded at school and had no friends. Well, Lina didn't see the need to make friends when all she needed was the knowledge to move on in life and earn a living. Right now, she barely made enough money from all her various jobs to keep a roof over her head. School and work took up so much of her time, that she had no longer any to spare for herself. She couldn't even remember the last time she felt happy.

Such a weird and unknown concept to Lina, happiness. The reason people do 'fun activities'. Lina never understood them, because everything in life needed to have a purpose, like earning money or learning. Everything had to serve a purpose, and she had no longer one.

In this moment, there was only one thing she could think of to end this circle of suffering. She slowly went back in the corridor, making sure that no one was around. She bent down, picked up her things and put them back into her bag. She didn't see the use in doing so, but she preferred leaving no trace of what happened here. No evidence, meant no one could blame her or at least know that she was involved. More precisely that she was the victim here.

Her nose was still dripping with blood, so she got out a tissue and stuffed it up her nose to stop the flow of blood for the time being. She peeked into a mirror and took a look at her face, for what she knew would probably be the last time she ever would. Lina was appalled a the state of her : it looked just as bad as it hurt.

Following her gut instinct, she navigated her way through the hallways of the school until she found the door. The door to the staircase leading up to the roof of the building was right in front of her now. Lina slumped up the stairs, and walked out into the open.

From the roof, she could see all the school grounds and the walls surrounding the buildings. The atmosphere was so serene up here, no people, just wide open space in peace.

She dropped her backpack and left it in a corner, near the door that lead her here. Even though she wouldn't need anything anymore, she liked having it with her. That backpack did also contain the last few possessions that she owned, along with the last memories that she kept of her parents and of course her school supplies. Lina then started slowly walking towards the edge of the school roof. The wind had started picking up and there was now a cool breeze blowing through her hair.

She had thought about unaliving herself for a little while now. There was no reason to continue she thought, she had no family to go back to, no friends, nobody who cared ...

So really who would notice her disappearance, like no one noticed her when she was around. Why would people worry ? Why be a burden to people? Why continue living this way? Why continue if 'living' is actually just surviving? Why stay on this damn planet? What if escape was the only solution? What if death was the most tempting option? What if death was the only option for her?

Lina kept listing more and more reasons to justify her actions, as she kept taking small steps towards the edge of the ledge. Although she wasn't scared of death, she did wonder if her fall would be painful. Though she was young, Lina suffered with chronic depression, and had learnt to survive with it for a couple years now. Even though it wasn't diagnosed by a doctor, because she couldn't afford help, she knew that she was depressed since a while. Overthinking sometimes takes people very far, ...

Lina had reached the edge. This was going to be her last step. She knew that these were her final moments. Looking around her, she took in the scenery and the sounds from the city. She took a deep breath and ...

" Lina ! Please stop!" screamed a voice behind her. Someone had swung the door wide open, and barged out onto the rooftop, breathless from running up those stairs.

She ignored it and lifted her foot up over the emptiness in front of her.

"Lina ! Don't do this ! Lina !" pleaded the voice as it approached her. It sounded desperate, as if trying to prevent this from happening.

She could now recognise the voice, it was Aaron's, the popular guy in her class. What the hell was he doing up here ?

"Go back to class Aaron, don't think about me. I want to do this, i have to do this. " Lina shouted in return. Why was he here ? Him out of all people ?He had never acknowledged her presence before, so why was he pretending to care now ?

" No, Lina ! Please !" belted Aaron as he ran as quick as he possibly could towards her, in hopes to stop Lina from ending her life.

Finally Lina let herself go, and felt herself falling, falling, ... Everything around her was blurry, rushing past her as she fell further. Although she did seem to just make out the outline of Aaron, running to the edge and watching her last moments. Her fall seemed to last for an eternity, even though she reached the ground in a couple seconds. She kept falling, deeper and lower into the darkness that surrounded her. Lina emptied her thoughts as she drew her last breath.

Then everything went blank ...
