Chapter 9 - Within Your Capabilities

Eron took his time with the individual pieces. Since he wasn't on a time limit he felt there was no need to rush and make mistakes. Starting with the handgun he carefully read through the instruction manual. It was surprisingly detailed and easy to read. With it he was able to gain a faint idea on how it all worked.

Picking up the gun he did a few tests, testing out its various properties. He almost immediately noticed that when he operated the slide there was no resistance to push it back into place. From what he understood from the manual there should be a spring to push against it. Such an old and outdated weapon, to think it would have problems like this.

The fix should be simple, he just needed to find out what was wrong with the spring. After double checking with the manual he rapidly disassembled the weapon. He was used to taking stuff apart and putting it back together, he needed to for a few of his odd jobs.

There was no spring, that was the issue. Eron frowned slightly, he didn't have any spare parts granted to him for the test. Was this just a case of him needing to identify the issue over actually having to fix it? So he asked, "I'm pretty sure the issue is the lack of a spring here, since I don't have one I can't fix it."

T merely answered, "You can identify or even fix them."

Interesting, it was almost as if he was telling Eron something. Gently placing the still disassembled weapon to the side he turned his focus to the radio. Once again picking up the manual he thoroughly read it. This time it was far more complicated. Since the handgun was a mechanical device it could generally be more easily understood. The radio was both mechanical and electrical however. Meaning there was more to it. After doing a few basic checks, power or battery, maybe the volume was low, Eron decided the issue lay deeper inside.

Compared to the handgun the radio was easier to disassemble. Just a few screws to remove a panel and the majority of its insides was clear to see. A small circuit board with various connections lay about in it. With a thorough comparison to the information on the manual Eron noticed that a few of the connections were unsteady. Some even looked like they would need to be soldered again.

Eron knew how to solder a few things, another thanks to his past of various odd jobs. Quickly pushing things back into position Eron used the multitool he was granted to solder a few of the connections. Giving another test he heard radio static shortly after he turned it on. Changing to a few channels he then heard voices, although faint and hard to understand. He wasn't entirely sure if it was due to a weak connection or it was merely due to the radio's old age.

Next up was the mechanical lock, when the key entered it could only be pushed halfway. Eron was careful not to break it further, but he still attempted to use a bit of force to see if it would budge. With the problem being immediate Eron already had an idea of what was wrong. Locks were more common among the odd jobs he had to do after all. The problem was the lock itself, there was no feasible way to open it.

It made sense, if a lock could be opened with a screwdriver it would be a terrible lock. But since the lock couldn't be opened it could not be fixed. Although Eron wasn't entirely sure if this was the case. The multitool he was granted was more of the newer models, it had just about every thing you could imagine for a tool. If he desired a lockpick then. . .

The tip of the multitool changed to a simple lockpick. Without any tension he wouldn't be able to open the lock, but that wasn't why he wanted it. Instead he desired to test an idea of his. After all since he wasn't required to fix everything, he could confirm his ideas on what the problem was. That should fill the requirement of identifying the issue.

It was a bit of a puzzle at first. Considering the handgun couldn't be properly fixed. With T's response he suddenly gained insight on what the test was supposed to be. It wasn't to show off, or even go the extra step. Rather it was to do what he could and nothing more. The reason behind that remained unknown to him however.

Putting the lockpick down he spoke, "I think I'm done."

T nodded, "Great, now let's start with the handgun. What did you notice?"

"The spring meant to hold the slide is missing. Without it I can't test anything else that might be wrong with it."

"What would you suggest to fix it?"

"To replace the spring, I don't know much about guns but I feel as if perhaps getting a newer one might be a better choice. This one even I can tell is old."

"Alright, next is the radio."

"Another outdated piece, it seemed like the connections were worn with age. After I fixed those it works, but I have no idea how it performed originally so I cannot compare."

"And the lock?"

"One of the pins are jammed, I couldn't get it unstuck with the key or the lockpick. I also have no clue on how to fix that."

"Excellent. Thank you for participating with my test. You can leave now, I'm sure you'll get your results here shortly."

"Thank you for your time.", Eron responded before leaving.

When the door clicked shut once he left T turned to a corner, "What do you all say?"

"~Kid doesn't know much about guns right? It's not half bad for someone with no knowledge. Caught on quick, but there was still about two more problems that could be identified."

"Fair enough, Ars?"

"~Radio was decent, looks like he has a bit of experience with electronics but nothing professional trained. Looks self taught. His testing was incredible inefficient and poor, but that can easily be worked on."

"That leaves you Access."

"~Why are you even trying to hire some kid? I know your concerns, but let's leave that one alone."

"That's what not I'm asking for."

"~. . . Fine, he spotted the problem. There's a lot of different ways he could have gotten it open, but you only asked for him to find and maybe fix the problem. He did as he was told."

"Then do we agree he fits the requirements?"

"~Are you really considering grabbing some rookie? We're not necessarily a safe bet you know."

"This is for the good of the team you know that."

"~Yes you told us. I have plenty of objections, but he did fulfill the requirements."

"~Same here."

"~Oh I'm looking forward to this!"

T placed the items back where he retrieved them from, "Excellent, I'll get the paperwork finished. You all get ready."

"~On it T!"
