"Guys?"
Bryan called out in the darkness. He still couldn't overcome the grief in his heart. Mae was dead. He had seen it with his own eyes. The vividness used as the sword came slashing across her neck sent shivers down his spine. He stood alert as he concentrated with his environment. Abi was a murderer on loose, he knew she would kill him too without a second thought. He could feel his fingers twitching in fear as his heart beat raced.
His eyesight was all but poor in this darkness. "So, do you still want to go back or will you stay with me?" A familiar voice asked in the darkness.
"Let me go please." Bryan cried out. He would not live in this world any longer. A finger skipped on his back as it slided up and along his neck. He was sure it was Abi. She stood behind him a breathe away as she leaned on his back. "I can't live without you." She turned him round but Bryan took a step back pointing her to stay away.
She was armless, just in her blouse and dark navy trouser.
"I'm sorry for what I done." She apologized as she ignored his warning to stay away.
"Leave me alone." Bryan wished but Abi won't bulge as she stepped forward too. Bryan hesitantly panted wanting to run immediately.
"I don't need you!" He shouted as he pushed off the woman trying to cling on him. He now regretted everything, and hated her more than ever. 'Grandma, I'm coming home.' Was the phrase of his soul as he ran away from village.
He could not hear the sound of pursuers nor Abi who had tripped behind him in the dark. He kept running, like an antelope, through the bushes and towards the cave. He didn't stop till he made it out of the cave. The waterfall at the front of the cave splashed viciously creating a huge steam of mist he had not seen before. Infront of him lay the path he did use after escaping from the faculty higher up the slope. The darkness had thinned as his eyesight sharpened. He could make out a path just at the front separating the up leading path, he went for the descend.
Nothing blocked his path as he run again downhill. His clothes pricked and torn from the thickets. His hands were full of blood so as his shirt. But it was dry blood, Mae's blood.
His adrenaline rushed and he ran faster down the hill and onto the tarmac road leading to the capital through the hills. The road was void. He looked at both sides but couldn't make out which way led home. His back full of sweat as he walked huffing along the road to the west. He heard a distant engine roar and felt relieved. He stood at the centre of the road as flashlights came into sight. The car was approaching under a sonic speed. Bryan got ready as the lights blinded him.
"STOP!" He shouted waving his hands as the car came screeching not stopping at all, he had no time to step aside as the car ran over him finally coming to a halt.
"OUCH!" Bryan was sent flying over the road crashing onto the ground with a loud thud as he groaned. He laid their trying to move his limbs but couldn't. The car a meter away, its head facing upslope as it had loosed control, sent a slight cloud of smoke from the engine. Bryan could faintly make out two beings crawling out of the damaged car cursing each other.
"You should have drove on!" The elderly person corrected the first who wanted to now come and check who he had hit.
"There is no time for that!" The elderly dragged the first again as they ran up the hill. Bryan just stared unable to shout out for help. The difference between him and a corpse only the breathe he had.
He rolled his eyes to the left as he felt the earth vibrating gently. His felt butterflies in his stomach as he guessed right. There was another car coming his way! It didn't last long before the lights shone on him again, he tried shouting out while raising his hand but could do neither. His left arm was in an awkward angle as his other had swollen from the elbow downwards. His legs felt numb too but only a push could he make out of them as he wiggled on the road.
In the white landcruiser approaching speedily, a woman sat upright and looked keenly on the way ahead. From their screen, they could make out the outline of a car dumped by the roadside.
"Stop! There is something on the road!" The woman yelled at the driver who immediately pulled up the safe brakes just in time.
"Oh my God!" Bryan heard a woman scream as his eyes could not open anymore. A pool of blood formed from his wound drained his life force. He could feel his heart beat slowing down as his consciousness faded. At least a Samaritan had arrived, a good Samaritan.
He drifted off just as a hand pulled him over calling for help.
"Quick, call an ambulanza!" The woman ordered aa she tore her trouser to wrap the wounds on his legs and arm.
A second land cruiser had pulled up too, seconds late after, and a crew jumped off the back and investigated the crushed car. It was clear this was an accident and the culprits had abandoned the site and sort refuge in the hill.
"Quick!search the hills." A tall man commanded as he puffed a cigar. The men patrolling the hills all had guns, G3's and AK 47's. A total of 20 men excluding the 5 who protected the lady administering first aid to Bryan.
"They have no where to hide." The man throws the cigar away and reports to the lady.
"I will hunt them all." She vowed as an ambulance from the nearest hospital was dispatched.
"Inspector!. We found a girl locked in the boot of the car." An officer reported back. Both the lady and the man looked at each other before the so called inspector ran over to check who it was.
A girl wrapped in celltape hand and foot tried screaming as the boot was opened wide.
"Take her out!" Inspector ordered as he studied the youthful figure. He moved closer and pulled off the tape on her mouth releasing the scream that had been long stored.
"We are here to help, see this my badge." The inspector held out his badge for her to read.
Soon she stopped struggling and they set her free.
"Help me please." The girl begged as her legs gave way and she fell on the road. Take her to the vehicle, Inspector ordered as he followed behind.
The search still went on as the ambulance arrived guarded by two police cars, behind the medic staff, a saloon drove closely. Soon they all came to a stop.
A team of paramedics rushed in immediately as they arrived. Without wasting time, they quickly applied disinfectants and antibiotics on Bryan's wounds as a catheter was stringed to his arm.
"Miss old Gindi. We will take care of him for you." A presumed nurse who recognized the lady promised as they carried Bryan into the Ambulanza and drove back. Only the saloon was left behind.
"Who leaked the information!" Miss old Gindi cursed as she recognized the driver seated in the saloon.
"Sir. You are advised to leave ASAP as you are invading government top secrecy" An officer quickly ran over to warn who ever drove the saloon.
"But the driver ignored the officer as he stepped out of the car and introduced himself.
"I'm Mac Hugh. A reporter from Nation Tv."
Inspector cursed too as he knew it won't be easy dealing with this case silently with the presence of a reporter, especially Mac Hugh.
"My partner here is my camera man, Dan." He introduced his partner who had followed suit and stood behind Mac, a huge canon already active!
With no otherwise, they decided to ignore the unwelcomed guest who took pictures all over reporting this live.
"Old miss Gindi." Inspector approached the woman as he requested. "Would you love to know the girl we just rescued?"
They headed towards the land cruiser at the front and there she was. One of Miss Old Gindi's hand-lady treating her some snacks.
"Hello again." Inspector greeted the girl.
"Hello Joe._" The youth replied back hesitantly.
"We need to question you first before taking you back to town where you shall file a report." Inspector looked at her curiously now, "What's your name?" He asked.
"Abigail Houston." She replied instantly.
"Can you please tell us how you ended up there." Inspector went on asking.
"The Governor invited me..." Before she could add more they realized Mac Hugh was some step away approaching.
"Don't say a thing till I ask you to." Inspector quickly whispered to Abi as he intercepted Hugh.
"You not going beyond me."
