Chapter 24 - Nice Bonus

"Good job, here's your reward, the bonus negates the penalty, so here's the five White Gold Plates," the guild receptionist said as I retrieved the reward.

I managed to destroy the mansion and got 75,000 Arleum as the reward, but I canceled the quest and have to pay half the quest reward. Luckily, I had quite a large amount of money for paying that. All and all, it was a good day.

Perhaps, I shall return to this guild office for a more difficult quest. However, it was now time to go home. The trip back to Olbora would take a day or so. My horse was also tired, it'd probably take more time than that.

"Young sir, why don't you take a vacation somewhere with that large amount of money?" The guild receptionist asked.

"Thanks for the offer, but this is for the village," I said.

"Village? Which village? I don't know that there's a village that needs that much amount of money," the guild receptionist said.

"Olbora Village, our village chief is gone so we are on our own," I replied.

"Oh. That's too bad. Give my regard to Sumia, though," she said.

"Will do."

I left the guild office and got on to the top of my horse. With nothing else to say or see, I left Bratdor village in haste. I wanted to return the money to the vending machine so I could get more stuff to be purchased.

-Two Days Later-

Both exhausted, my horse and I arrived at Olbora Village. Things went better than expected. There was still no standing house in the village, but the volunteer military project worked perfectly it seems.

At least, I could see four soldiers walking around the village. One was Sawyer, Ilya, and two other people that I failed to recognize. I also noticed several heavy machine gun placements in the village. All of them were M2 browning.

I headed deeper into the village, going past the first line of defense consisting of heavy machine guns behind sandbags.

"Hey, nice to meet you back, I thought you'd be leaving for a week or so," Sumia approached me.

I failed to notice her. Where was she all along? Nah, this was too far from the guild office. I then peeked to the right. The answer came in the form of 120 mm mortars alongside its munition. She was the mortar operator. Of course, she still had arm strength, but her mobility was pretty much shit.

"Sumia, the receptionist at Bratdor Village sent her regard," I said.

"Oh, is that so? Sawyer is expecting you, why don't you meet him?" Sumia said.

"Sure, I'll go there," I replied.

Sumia went back to her spot. This time, instead of carrying a sword, she was carrying an M4 carbine. Well, I wouldn't protest the weapon of choice, but well, it was Sawyer being Sawyer. Or should I say, Sawyer, being a former M4 user?

Eventually, I arrived at the mansion. Weirdly enough, some of the vines were gone and the scaffolding was fixed. Someone must have tried restoring the damn thing. I must say, good job.

I tied down the horse to a pole then I entered the mansion. The first entrance of the mansion had been turned into a bloody ammo depot. Several crates of ammunition were scattered on the floor alongside the weapons to use it.

"7.62x51 M80 BALL"

"5.56x45 M855A1"

"120 mm for Mortar"

Several M4s alongside with DMRs were also laying down on the ground. There were also spare armors and helmets. It looked like Sawyer managed to buy a lot of stuff from the vending machine.

"Alfie!"

"Sawyer, bloody hell, how did you train these misfits?" I asked her.

"Misfits? Sumia and Ilya were former royal guards, John was from the regular army, and the others aren't exactly hard to train," Sawyer said.

"Still, you manage to do this in three days. That's impressive," I said.

"Anyway, what do you bring from your adventure. I thought you'd be gone for a week or so," Sawyer commented.

I showed the five white gold plates. Sawyer was amazed. He didn't know the value of one plate, so it was rather expected, at the end of the day. Of course, after this, the next step was...

"Let's go to the vending machine!" Sawyer said.

Yup, that would happen. We headed into the secret door and headed downstairs towards the bunker. The vending machine was as usual, and I put my items inside of it. The total credits rose up.

[Balance: 272,500 Cr]

With this amount of money, to be honest, I didn't even have the thought of buying new things. Maybe, it was better to repair the bunker partially using the money. I headed to the bunker maintenance terminal.

[Upgrade Menu] [Maintenance Menu]

I clicked the [Maintenance Menu]

[Automated Repair System: 10,000,000 Credits]

[Partial Repair System: 100,000 Credits]

I clicked on the partial repair system. There was an option to repair what system. Let me think this through because this would eat a partial amount of our money. Then again, it could be a waste of money, so who knew?

A partial repair system would only restore 1% of one system. It couldn't fix everything at once. To be honest, it was kinda of expected. I didn't think there would be a kind of shortcut to open the other doors of this bunker.

I chose to repair the air recycler. At the very least, the bunker wouldn't be a certain death trap anymore. I chose the option, and the sound of machinery came from the nearby wall. Sawyer immediately went on full alert from the sound alone.

"The heck happened?" Sawyer asked.

"The bunker automated repair system, I think?" I said.

"Oh, is that so? It makes sense then," Sawyer said.

Suddenly, an air vent opened on top of our head and it let go of fresh air, replacing the carbon dioxide in the air. The breeze was cooling down the blistering hot bunker.

"Finally, some fresh air," I commented.

"Why are you restoring this bunker, even though it is very expensive?" Sawyer asked, not understanding my motivation.

"Contingency. If somehow, our last defense is breached, this would be our only way out," I said.

"Oh, I see your motivation. However, I want to show you something," Sawyer said.

Sawyer headed to one of the unopened doors of that bunker. The RFID scanner appeared to have been tinkered with. What the heck did Sawyer up to now?
