Chapter 17 - Sea of Fire

"Bell, why the hell are you retreating?" Sawyer noticed me from afar, it seemed.

"The cavalry is aiming at me, a little bit busy here, a little bit of assistance will be appreciated, Sawyer," I said as I whipped my horse and tried to erase the cavalry from the face of this world with the machine gun.

A barrage of arrows flew in my direction. I paced my horse faster to dodge those arrows. Those arrows made a quiet whirring noise as they barely missed my body. I noticed that an arrow flew in the direction of my arm protector. The arrow flinched and broke in half once it hit the ceramic plates inside of the armor.

"Shit, that was close," I moved the horse erratically to make my movement a little bit unpredictable.

However, with the intensity of the arrow rain, it would be hard to dodge them all. Could I keep myself from being shot until I killed them all? These guys were quite smart, they adapted their tactics.

I should have used something more suitable for this kind of situation, instead, this machine gun was simply not enough to wipe them all out. Moving my horse erratically also reduced my accuracy.

"Bell, all houses are burning, only the guild office is left standing!" Sawyer shouted.

"What?" I said through the radio.

I shot off a cavalry group again with my MG4. No idea of what I should do later, I just shot at the archers without any mercy. Another arrow barrage flew in my direction, this time, it hit the horse in the head and killed it immediately. I fell down on the ground and hit my knees pretty hard.

"Holy shit, they got the bloody horse," I said as I stood up from the ground and grabbed my machine gun.

I ran down towards the village. The village turned into a sea of fire, but the guild office was still intact. The arrow rain continued in my direction. One arrow managed to get me in the foot. However, I ignored the burning pain because I'd probably get hit more by an arrow.

Albeit limping, I went to the burning fire and sheltered myself behind one of the buildings from the arrow. Bloody hell, the wound started leaking more blood than I previously expected. The tourniquet was in the medic bag, shit.

Sawyer noticed me with the bleeding on my leg. He was carrying his first aid bag on his back and ran towards my direction.

"Damn, that's quite the bleeding," Sawyer commented as he looked at the bleeding.

The blood appeared as black liquid coming out of my leg from the view of the night-vision goggles. I opened the first aid kit and grabbed a tourniquet. I didn't have to panic, the bleeding was not on my chest.

I cut the arrow so it no longer disturbed my movement. I could remove the arrow later, but right now, the objective was to survive this hell hole until morning came.

"Can you still fight?" Sawyer asked me.

"I can, but I can't be mobile, let's switch roles, give me your M16, I'll act as a marksman," I said.

We swapped the magazines and ammunition box on our ballistic vest. With my limping foot, I wouldn't be able to move back and forth without a horse. I immediately walked towards the guild office while Sawyer headed for the enemy.

I aimed the scope of Sawyer's M16 towards any hostile that held staff or any sticks. They were the high-value targets. The cross hair landed on one of the female magicians, I pulled the trigger and she fell from the top of her horse.

Sawyer shot his machine gun from behind the burning house. I opened the door of the guild office. Sawyer evacuated everyone there. Well, good job, man. It would be easier to give them care if that was the case.

I opened one of the windows and put aimed my rifle through the window. I covered Sawyer to the best of my ability. The M16 only had around 60 rounds left, I better make sure every round resulted in a kill.

A bunch of crying and moaning came from the civilian behind me. What did they do? They weren't guilty of anything, and why did they leave this guild office unscratched.

"Who are those guys? And where the hell is our village chief?" Sumia approached me from behind while asking a question that I couldn't answer.

"The hell should I know? I only know that they sent an entire army to attack us," I replied.

I pulled the trigger twice to kill two archers. I chose my target carefully, right now, I only searched for those who wore the thickest armor. They would be the leader and it would send chaos.

"Bell, I need an assist here. I'm on the west," Sawyer said through the radio.

I limped my bleeding leg to the west side window and aimed my rifle through it. Sawyer was running away from a stray horse that was chasing after him. Sawyer ran in zigzag, but he couldn't keep that up for long while carrying a machine gun.

I pulled the trigger once. The bullet flew to the head of the horse and put him on the ground. Sawyer was now safe, and it seemed the cavalry charge had begun to die down.

The night sky had begun to turn orange from the east. I continued killing all of those bastards that tried to keep mounting an offensive on the village. The 5.56 round penetrated right through the armor of the assaulter, making my job a little bit easier.

"Bell, they're retreating!" Sawyer shouted through the radio.

Yeah, Sawyer was right. The moment every leader went for the ground, we managed to hold the cavalry charge. The horse had spread across multiple directions. I took a deep breath as I sat down on the floor. Man... What a long night.
