Adeola paced heavily as she ran into an abandoned building to seek refuge. She appeared as if someone was chasing her with the intention of hurting her. She hasn't done anything wrong, nor has she committed a crime, as she thought. The whole building was wretched and falling apart, but at least it can hide her for a while. She hid herself under a cabinet in one of the rooms and breathed heavily like someone who was suffering from a panic attack. All she heard was a "Voice" not a movement or a person. The voice sounded audible and sharp, like the voice of a man. It travelled faster through the room until it reached Adeola who had no idea of who it might be.
…. "Ye, son of a man! Where are you? Why are you hiding from me?"
The voice sent chills down her spine, she could neither voice out nor confront the non-identified voice, but something kept urging her to save herself and defend herself for she had a chance.
…"Will you keep hiding yourself away from me? Or are you not going to answer your Creator?"
.."Who are you?". She bravely said to the voice. Even if she was scared, it's better to know what someone's fear is, and as so she did.
…"You are in the position of turning back time. You're holding unto the lifeline of another, you're wasting your time making a decision on it. Remember, if you don't listen to my words, there will be consequences".
These were the last words of his before the voice fainted away slowly. Now that it's all gone, it's left for Adeola to make her decision whether she would listen or act according to her will.
Alarm rang at exactly seven o-clock in the morning. The heavy noise woke the sleeping Adeola as she set to begin another day. She reminisced of the nightmare she had as she brushed her teeth. She worried about how she has been constantly having the same dream over and over again. She is not a believer or a religious person. Why would God choose her to carry out an assignment, and what kind of assignment could that be?. For a moment she pondered on the issue but without the conclusion of her mind, she set on her day and resumed her work.
Monday morning is always the most productive day out of the week. As a lawyer, she still thinks Monday exists for trials and court because she is always recharged after the lazy weekend. Her assistant slash Paralegal briefed her on a case they were working on that hasn't yet made an appeal to the court. She seemed to have news on the issue.
."The court has finally granted the appeal, so we are having the first hearing two days from now."
"Finally!".
The news brought a smile on Adeola's face and brightened her mood. This case would set her career in the law space. Her boss has assigned this case to her specially and if she wins she gets to be a senior partner at the law firm. Nothing is more rewarding than fulfilling her late mother's wish, who hoped for the best for her daughter. Her mother was just an ordinary illiterate who had hoped her daughter would be greater than her and even better. Unfortunately death took her away from Adeola sooner than expected. It was a hit and run accident that has brought great depression for Adeola eversince. Although the culprit hasn't been found or brought to face justice, she still hopes to reopen the case after she has more power to do so.
…"Don't you think this case might be a little dangerous for you? This is a rape case we are talking about, that man raped a minor, and yet he thinks it not his fault."
Annie vexed out her emotions. She got more concerned about this particular case. Nothing else worried her like before ever since they began working on the case, finding every evidence that would set the man free of the charges. Even though their law firm is run by rich clients' money, there has to be a limit where they will have to draw the line and maintain some dignity.
…"Why do you say so? We have been doing great lately. You know it's our job to acquit a client of any charge provided we use law".
"But we are manipulating the law against human rights."
Annie stands by her words firmly. This is new for her to stand and defend herself. It's her job to facilitate the establishment of the attorney-client relationship and to assist in the production of legal documents and papers, not to argue a case with the lawyer.
…"Annie, the human rights of our client is also violated, plus it's not our duty to also defend the victim, that's the job of a prosecutor provided for such a person. Why are you so negative all of a sudden?".
Annie sure has her own reason for being dramatic all of a sudden. She narrated how she heard the "The Voice" of her late Grandmother scolding her to live a better life. Her Grandmother was a disciplinarian before she died, she doesn't take nonsense from people, not even her children or grandchildren. Her voice made her quivered because Grandma was always right.
.."Because of a voice you're acting this way? Annie, come on! How can you be so sure that it's about this case?".
.."I'm one hundred percent sure it's about this case. Remember, you told me about the constant dream you always had since we laid out hands on this case? This must be a sign for us to stop, let them change lawyers quickly."
Although Annie's words frightened her a little bit because she has already witnessed something similar, she still believed it's her only chance of getting promoted which will be of great help to her. She would only listen and act upon her own will, nothing else matters anymore as the first trail is two days from now.
****************************************
The day went by quickly and night replaced the day. Most workers at the law firm had left for the day, while some still lagged around in their offices working on cases to be presented the next day. Adeola worked on her computer, she went through the social media page of the Victim, a nineteen year old girl who was molested by Mr Adams, the one she represents. It would be a lie if she said she wasn't concerned about the girl but she was. As much as she wished for Mr Adams to get punished by the law, she still wanted to win the case for it was her only chance to succeed. No one was in the room with her when everything went dark in the room. Probably an electricity cut, she thought. As the light wasn't coming back on time, she reached out for her phone to turn the flashlight on only to witness something magical and also horrific at the same time in her office.
She saw a face in the dark, not probably sure of what she saw. She flashed her light on it once again but this time the face had disappeared. She got scared for a little while but she made a conclusion that it must be the essence of coffee she had earlier, making her hallucinate. She went back to her work and worried when the light was going to return.
Minutes later, she began hearing some rattle noises and movement in her office. She knew no one was there with her in the room, it's only her who stayed behind. Annie had been clocked out since six o'clock in the evening, even the workers who were pulling all night were in their offices far from her. Out of fear, she confronted the scene.
"Who's there? Leave now or I will call security."
It was like she made the spirit mad. Items in her office began to fall from her shelves including files and books. The room shook as if there was an earthquake but there wasn't since no one knew what was going on. Adeola screamed out and called for help but didn't receive any response. The door in her office was locked and the ceiling was tearing apart. It was like a horror movie, and she was the lead character.
Suddenly she saw a brim of light under her "Table". It appeared like a whirlwind or more like a loophole. Without thinking much she went under her "table" to check things out, she probably thought she was in a dream and went into the light which took her to a place she had never been before, more like a past.
April 20, 2020, the day her mother got into an accident. Adeola found herself at the scene of the accident. She witnessed her mother getting hit by an unknown car which was scary for her enough to peed her pants. She found herself calling out for her mother asking for help but nobody was there to help because it's on the highway and people hardly used the road. Her mother's lifeless body suddenly became cold and blood gushed out from her head. Within a few minutes her soul left the body. Adeola found herself running at full speed chasing after the car that just hit her mother. She realized she possessed a power she never knew as she floated in air catching up to the car. Without opening the car door, she found herself at the back seat and discovered the driver to be Mr Adams, the client she was defending.
"Mr Adams?"
Shockingly, Mr Adams saw her in the car with him. He wondered how she got there and both wrestled each other as the car drove on its own. To free himself of her, he started strangling her on the neck making it difficult for her to breathe. She became suffocated and unable to breathe anymore but before anything bad could happen, two different whirlwinds appeared in the front seats. Without clear vision, she pushed Mr Adams away and rushed to touch a glowing green light which took her back to her office. Adeola returned back to her original position which was under the "Table" in her office and gasped for air, before she finally got a hold of herself. She realized it was morning when she saw Annie checking into the office to start her day.
"Good morning boss. Don't tell me you slept in the office and didn't go home? Why are you so obsessed with this case?".
"Not anymore".
Adeola said before making her way to the Director's office. She had a message to delivered and it's about making sure that Mr Adams got what he deserved; Firstly; for raping a minor, and Secondly; for killing her mother.
The end.
