Chapter 3 - Skill

Disregarding the window that popped up before his eyes, he turned around and started panicking from all the pain. Dropping down on the ground and positioning himself in the foster position, he eventually calmed down.

After gathering his thoughts, he took off his sweatshirt and t-shirt, ripped apart the t-shirt into small shreds, and used them as a makeshift bandage for his bleeding knuckles. All while barely being able to move his fingers from the constant pain harassing him.

Putting the sweatshirt back on and having found a temporary solution for the problem at hand, he focused his attention back on the window where it had remained at the same spot he had left it.

"I swear if I got scammed, I'll go back and fight Orion myself."

Alaric cursed while in the worst pain he had experienced in his life.

Arriving before the window, he noticed it was way more colorful than the others. It contained a wheel with four colors and eight slices. The colors were blue, red, green, and yellow, with each color having 2 slices.

Reading the text again, Alaric held his thumbs for a moment, and when ready, he did as the text instructed and said, "Spin."

Recognizing the command, the system spun the wheel. Swirling, the colors created a beautiful illusion, almost like a rainbow shield that completely entranced Alaric with its beauty.

After a while of spinning, it started slowing down, making Alaric come back to his senses and start fervently rambling.

"Please be something good; please be something good."

The wheel eventually stopped, and to Alaric's surprise, it was his favorite color.

"GREEN!!"

After stopping, the wheel ripped off the colored slice that now looked like a piece of paper, and it came floating out of the system, traveling towards Alaric's forehead.

"NOT AGAIN!" Alaric beckoned, seeing the second thing trying to enter his forehead in one day.

Like previously, Alaric closed his eyes, preparing for immense pain, but yet again, he felt nothing.

Opening his eyes, he saw another window that had popped up before him.

"Wood Wall? how does it work?"

He said while clicking out of the text window and opening the main system window.

Species: Inferior Human

Level: 1 (0/100)

Stage: No stars

Stats: (Strength: 9) (Speed: 8) (Stamina: 7) (Intelligence: 10) (Mana: 50/50) (Mind: 5)

Skills: (Wood wall)

Quests: (Expandable) >

Alaric then clicked the skill, which opened another window, expanding the skill's information with a bit of description about it.

< Low-rank defensive skill Wood Wall,

Description: Wood Wall creates a small wall made of wood as a form of defense. Works only on dirt, and the caster must be near a tree. Wood Wall uses the tree's roots and grows a small wall out of the ground.

Cast time: Depends on distance from the nearest tree, one second added per meter away, with a max of 10 meters.

Mana required: 5 initial use, scales up 1 extra mana per meter, max mana use 15.>

Thinking of how to use it, the green paper slice appeared in his mind, this time containing the text, "To activate, imagine the roots of the nearest tree slithering up till it reaches your preferred destination."

After reading the information contained on the green paper, he spun around and looked for the nearest tree. Alaric started imagining the roots of the tree slithering towards him and constructing a wall in front of him.

After about 5 seconds of imagining, the earth broke away, and many roots started shooting from the ground and reaching for the sky. Intertwining together, the roots began forming a small wall, about a meter in height and a meter in width.

The rooted wall was brown in color and looked to be quite sturdy, perhaps slightly less than half a meter in thickness. Combining this with its rooty texture made it really good against physical attacks since the wall wasn't a plain surface.

A small window also popped up to Alaric's left, reading -10 mana (40/50) remaining.

"This skill seems quite useful; although the requirements necessary are quite high, it seems really effective."

Having gotten his prize, he felt overjoyed; however, he suddenly remembered his knuckles and started running around fervently, trying to find a way to heal them. Unfortunately, he couldn't come up with an answer, and he eventually turned his attention back to the system and expanded the quest log again.

Daily Quest:

1. Run 5 kilometers (Reward: 3 free stat points)>

"Run 5 kilometers?? How am I supposed to do that with crushed knuckles?"

However, looking at the reward, Alaric suddenly became obsessed, "3 free stat points? Not bad, time to start."

Clicking the quest and closing the quest log, Alaric looked around and realized again that he was in a forest, making running 5 kilometers a very challenging task.

Not prepared to give up, however, Alaric chose a direction and started running. Looking at the counter go up (0.1km/5km), (0.2km/5km) filled Alaric with energy, making him gleam out of joy every time the number budged.

Almost like he was addicted to seeing the number increase, Alaric again forgot about the searing pain in his knuckles and legs. By this point, blood was flowing through the makeshift bandages, and looking at his feet, one could see them being miscolored, having turned blue and purple from all the times he sprained his ankles on the uneven surface.

Eventually, the number reached its climax, reaching the 5km goal and another window popped up before Alaric.

Like last time, however, Alaric only took a glance at the window, reading about half the words before he again realized the pain he was experiencing.

"FUCK!"

Immediately dropping to the ground, he lay in the dirt, his head next to the tree roots, without a chance of standing anytime soon. Completely out of breath and in excruciating pain, he couldn't even utter a word.

In his mind, however, only one word was playing repeatedly.

'fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.'

Lying for a while, with still no hopes of standing up, he noticed the root that had previously been right next to his head start moving. Without even a second of time to escape, the root had already wrapped around Alaric's head, leaving no openings to escape.

The root didn't stop at his head and kept swirling around his body until his entire body was completely bound by the thick root, making it nearly impossible to break out.

Being completely exhausted and severely injured, he had no power to struggle and said one final thing before his imminent death.

"Fuck."

Not sure what would happen, Alaric closed his eyelids and prayed for a quick and painless death. However, after a few seconds of praying, nothing occurred.

Opening his eyes again, he felt an energy of sorts coming out of the vine; when the energy reached Alaric, he screamed out of delight, receiving a fantastic feeling from the energy.

"THANK GOD, THANK YOU SO MUCH, I'LL NEVER SKIP CHURCH AGAIN!"
