Chapter 4 - How does it work?

Caleb followed Alexander as they assessed the place where the fight took place. There were three rogues in chains in the center, all three with no serious injuries, but definitely not in the condition to run.

The two men looked around, there had been two losses that day so far, more to be confirmed as they made sure all the warriors were okay. The fifty warriors Caleb had organized had quickly entered the battle and quickly ended it. It was Luna's guards who had suffered the most injuries as they were the first to contain the rogues.

Caleb saw as Adele and Matias left to recover Angel's body. There was little hope in finding him alive, but the rest of the guards were hopeful.

Caleb saw all of the members of Nora's escorts except for Adira. He had seen her stop halfway after making sure Nora had made it to safety and then turned back to fight the rogues with the other five escorts. He looked over at the bodies and noticed a small group of warriors surrounding the body of a black balding wolf on the floor. One of the warriors was moving it to the side, and right under it was Adira.

She had transformed back into her human form. She had a major injury over her abdomen and red marks over her neck. Caleb approached the group and kneeled next to her body. She was alive but unconscious.

Alexander was right behind him still in his wolf form.

"Ish she okay?"

Caleb noticed the worry in his voice. Although they had been fighting for the last month, Alex still worried about the young she-wolf.

"I think so."

Somebody placed a thin blanket over her body, covering her. Although they were used to each other's nudity, she was an unconscious woman. She was exposed.

"Looks like there are two people dead, fourteen injured, three of those are unconscious warriors, including her," Rose informed Alexander and Caleb as she pointed at Adira.

The whole pack was aware of Rose and Adira's quarrel. Both women had been at odds for a while now, but they still performed their jobs flawlessly.

With the exception of recent events in Adira's record.

Caleb looked around; people were starting to move the injured ones to the pack hospital. He looked at the unconscious Adira and carefully lifted her. The blanket had started to get soaked through with blood coming out of her injuries that were healing way too slow.

Caleb carried her to the hospital, making sure he didn't hurt her more. One of the nurses ran to his aid and guided him to one of the beds where he laid Adira down. He nursed removed the blanked and looked over at her injury, He started an Iv on her arm while a doctor started to assess her.

"It looks like she was being strangulated; get a CT scan done ASAP. The injuries seem to be closing just fine. Clean them and place a bandage over them. Give her fluids and run a pathology exam on the tissue around the injury. I want to make sure she doesn't get an infection." The nurse started to follow the orders of the doctor as soon as she was done examining Adira.

When he noticed Caleb was still waiting there, he stopped moving for a second but immediately continued with his work.

"Yes, Beta?" he asked.

"Is she going to be okay?" he asked. Caleb knew very little about medicine. His knowledge consisted of first aid and CPR. But looking at Adira's injuries, he was unsure of what was going on.

The nurse moved around the area, Caleb trying to stay out of his way. The nurse called for help from an assistant, who started to hand him the material he asked for.

"We need to make sure there were no internal injuries related to the strangulation, if they come out normal that is great news. She's not losing too much blood either. As a matter of fact, the injuries are starting to close now," he was collecting samples off of her injuries, using a long swab and placing them in testing tubes. "But we need to make sure she didn't get infected by the scavengers."

Caleb nodded. He heard through the link that there were some wolves near the final stage to become scavengers in the group. Maybe Adira had been one of the few people who fought against one. The nurse took some blood out of her arm and filled another three testing tubes, placing them all in a bag.

"Send this to the lab immediately." He told the assistant.

"I'll leave her in your care, then," Caleb finally told the nurse as he was now ignoring him, taking care of his patient.

"Thanks."

He left the hospital and made his way back to the packhouse. Nora was helping along with other young people clean up after the fight. The ones who had been in critical condition had been sent to the pack hospital, and those with minor injuries were in the meeting room of the packhouse. When he saw Caleb enter, she gave him a pair of shorts that he put on.

"How is Adira?" she asked him. "Alex said you took her to the hospital."

"They told me not to worry. She was okay."

Nora nodded, wiping the tears that had started to fall. Caleb had no idea how to help her, they were not really close to each other, but he cared for her. He distracted himself by helping others remove the bodies of the rogues off the grounds. It was tiring work, but enough action to distract him from the massacre that he had been a part of.

A few hours later, he found Alexander poking at the body of one of the rogues with a stick. It was the same black dog he had seen when he found Adira.

Alexander used the stick to open the eye of the wolf, his face in a grimace. He noticed Caleb and he dropped the stick next to the body, standing straight.

"This one had one step on the door," he pointed at the corpse. "Look at the fur and the yellow eyes…"

Caleb did not need to look; he knew what his Alpha was talking about.

"How many are there?"

"According to Rose, there were seven."

Caleb crossed his arms and looked around the place. There was a total of nineteen dead rouges waiting to be burned. There had been three prisoners, and two rouges that had gotten away which were being hunted down by some of his warriors. A total of twenty-four rogues had made their way into the territory.

"Have the prisoners said anything yet?"

"No," Alexander shook his head, anger slipping through his voice. "I was on my way to go talk to them."

"I'll go with you."

They made their way to the dungeons. It was a one-story concrete building. It had no windows, and the only way to access the door was with a card key and a passcode only known to a few.

Alex entered the code and a small slot opened for him to insert his key. Then the handle-less door slid open revealing a room full of guards. One of them pressed his hand over a screen and another door opened, letting them enter the first few cells.

The dungeons were divided into different sections. It was underground, the lower the level, the higher the security. They passed the cells where minor crimes criminals were held and made it into the lowest level where the interrogations took place.

The three men were hanging from the ceiling with their wrists and ankles holding them in place by silver chains. They were completely naked, making sure they had no place to hide any weapons.

The one on the right side was the youngest, probably in his late teens, or early twenties. He had short black hair and a beard that covered most of his chin. He appeared to not be scared, but the smell of fear emanated oof of him in big waves.

The one in the middle was about forty or fifty years old. His long blonde hair was tied up in a low ponytail. His green eyes looked stained with yellow and so were his teeth as he was growling at the newcomers.

The last man was about twenty-five to thirty years old. His hair was up in a man bun with an undercut shave. He looked around like someone who visits a museum, appreciating the torture instruments placed on the table next to him. His attitude bothered Caleb

"Nice little toys you've got there," he was telling the woman who was keeping guard. She ignored him and saluted Alexander and Caleb by exposing her neck a little.

Caleb stood next to the Judas chair while Alexander proceeded to start the interrogation.

"What are your names?"

The young and older man looked at the one on the right, who seemed to be the one in charge among them.

"Oh, hello!" he faked excitement. "My name is Suck, My good old fella there is My, and the young guy there is Dick."

Caleb had to admit, that was ingenious. Alexander did not think the same though.

He punched the man in the stomach, causing him to bend over but the chains kept him in place.

"Name?" he asked him again, this time looking at the young guy.

"Uh, S… Scott." He replied nervously.

"Tell me Scott, what were you planning to do when you attacked my Luna and her guards?"

Scott was about to answer when the man on the right interrupted him.

"Oh, was she the Luna? Couldn't really tell." Caleb walked up to the table and picked a thumbscrew. He inserted the man's fingers in it and started to turn the screw. He did not make it tight, just enough to become painful. "What the fuck with your medieval torture tools?"

"What can I say? I am but a traditional man." Caleb replied with a grin.

"Why did you attack them?" Alexander asked Scott again.

Scott gave one look at the man on the right and stayed silent. When Alexander asked again and there was still no reply, he received a punch on the left knee causing it to get dislocated. The kid stayed silent, looking at the floor.

This interrogation room in specific was a torture chamber decorated by Caleb and Rose. Both preferred to use devices rather than punch their victims to get the answers they were looking for. They collected tools from the medieval era as well as modern torture instruments.

"Want to know what that one is for?" he pointed at the Judas chair, Scott looked over the room, stopping to look in horror at the chair. He shook his head, trying to take a step back. "Then answer the question."

"They were getting hungry." He replied, looking in horror around the room.

"Who?"

"They" he pointed over at the man in the middle who hadn't stopped growling.

"We noticed you guys were hanging around with infected ones… why?"

"La la la la laa!" Interrupted the man again. Caleb turned the screw tighter, blocking the circulation on his fingers. "Ouch!"

"Shut it," Caleb warned him.

"Oh, c'mon, dude!" He responded. "The kid barely knows anything. Do you mind letting that thing looser, please? Kinda hurting there," he told Caleb who, as a response, picked another thumbscrew and put it on his left hand.

"Scott?" Caleb called the young man who looked at him waiting for his next words. "I've been waiting to use the chair for a while. Wanna see how it is used?"

He turned to the guard who was standing next to the door, used to seeing some brutal interrogations. She approached Caleb with the keys and helped him bring the man down. Together, they pushed him toward the Judas chair and tied him to the cables hanging from the ceiling.

"What are you doing?" there was a small hint of fear filtering through. "Hey! Wait, stop!"

Caleb and the guard ignored his cries and pressed the button to lift him over the chair, his bottom right on top of the chair.

"What is your name?" Caleb ask him one more time.

"I already told you…"

"Yeah, yeah," Caleb interrupted him. If the man would not talk, Scott would. "Nice to meet you." And he pressed the button just enough to hear his scream in pain. "Scotty!" he called the young man. "This is how a Judas chair works."
