The "Katherine case", as it turns out, was the result of an extra-meticulous – if Aidan Brook the FBI agent's words are to be believed – social engineering experiment done by Beckham Cardell, a man who is clearly diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder.
Furthermore, Aidan was able to determine why Beckham had those delusions of grandeur.
He was neglected as a child.
His parents were almost always not by his side because they were both extremely busy at work, and thus he would always be in the care of his uncles and aunts, who never had children themselves and thus had twisted views on parenthood.
These single folk inculcated in him that one can achieve anything, and no one else should stop that someone from achieving.
And when he faced his parents for important occasions such as Christmas, all he got were lavish gifts and quick pats to the head. Nothing more.
In school, he was always alone, and he hesitated to make friends.
