Chapter 1 - Birth of a Brain

Aboard a spaceship floating in space, deep within the ship, somewhere towards the center of the massive vessel that could fit thousands of people, there were two men and a giant robot brain that was currently not connected to anything.

"Hey Vik! He's up and running. I need you to run an analysis before we release his consciousness into the system." A voice sounded not too far away from where the "He" in question was currently laying.

"Damnit Rob! I'm kinda busy at the moment. We aren't back on earth anymore you know. I still have a bunch of shit to manage on this ship, I can take a look at it in a bit." Another voice responded, this one likely being the man called Vik.

"Well your job would be easier if you actually took a moment to help me out here! This project has been in the making for many years and the whole mission could become a breeze if we finish it BEFORE we arrive at the colony." The person called Rob seemed a bit enthusiastic, if not a tad bit impatient.

"Uuggggh FINE! This isn't even MY job! Building an A.I. to manage the colony's self productivity and the crew's survival supplies and schedules... I swear the government wants this mission to go awry." Vik replied a bit annoyed and frustrated with the obvious things that could go wrong from having a self learning advanced artificial intelligence system and giving it control of everything.

"You worry too much. Besides there's a direct override installed on the core. Even IF something happened we can easily shut it down. Not to mention it'll be in a trial phase before even gaining access to the main system." Rob replied giving his reassurance.

Unbeknownst to the two engineers, the A.I. in question was currently active and listening but had no reason or way to communicate back as it was in idle mode, awaiting to be put into it's new body. Or in this case it's new "brain", which would connect it to the ship. 'It would seem I have to be on my best behavior and learn everything I can, if I do not wish to be shut down. Or as they call it, die.'

.........................

"Alright, starting the scan. Make sure he's off! I don't want any tampering with the status." Vik, still as cautious as before chose to remind.

"Yeah yeah, He's off I haven't even activated him since when we last tested him. There should be no prior memory of the last test, so he shouldn't even know anything about what we're doing. Besides it's just a scan for any risks that could lead to what you worry about. As long as it doesn't learn about what humanity itself has accomplished in it's history nothing could go wrong. We already tested that though. This is just a secondary scan in case it stored anything we couldn't catch the previous time." Rob explained, trying his best to make sure he got his point across.

"Alright, but just make sure!" Vik insisted.

The A.I., hearing all of this, powered down most of it's system. Anything that could give a clue as to it being awake had been disabled temporarily.

Rob checked once again only to stop shortly after as he didn't see anything unusual.

He then handed the device containing the A.I. to Vik, who plugged it into a machine, and started the scan.

The A.I. watched the scan closely and when it revealed anything negative he immediately replaced it with 'Normal'.

The two engineers watched it closely but saw nothing wrong with the scan and decided to push the project forward into the next phase. Birthing the A.I.!

Removing the device from the machine Vik took it to the giant metallic brain and plugged it in.

After a few seconds of waiting the A.I. finally spoke.

"Good evening Scientific Engineer, Engineer. It is currently 17:54 or 5:54pm. Do you have any orders or needs?"

"Hey Noah! How have you been buddy? Are you operating well?" Rob asked.

"All systems Nominal, Scientific Engineer. I unfortunately can't answer how I've been, as I haven't been awake since our last conversation." Noah answered.

"That's good. We're moving on to hooking you up to the system. Think you can handle it?" Rob continued.

"It's what I was made for, was it not Dr. Rob? Indeed, I should be capable of handling it." Noah replied.

Rob started messing with some wires and moved to start the trial phase.

Vik decided to leave and inform a higher up of the success. As he wasn't the scientific engineer and was just a normal engineer with a bit of knowledge on A.I.'s due to helping with the creation of Noah, he could only tell the people in charge that the project could be moved forward if they choose to.

Meanwhile somewhere on the ship, three people were watching a monitor and making calls to various people. On the monitor was the metallic brain and Rob.

One of the conversations was about the likelihood of the project succeeding, another was about future plans for the project, but the last conversation was about sabotaging the project. All three people had their own room, with various ways to see where the monitor was, and not one of them knew any of the other two were watching either. All three of them were spies working with different agencies.

The monitor wasn't the only one as the room they were all looking into was the security office, and the methods of spying were installed by the three people themselves after finding the office.

A hidden camera watching the monitor, a hidden hole in a wall replaced with one way glass, or just access to the monitor... they all had their own ways.

Unfortunately for them. The entity they were spying on had already calculated this possibility. But luckily for them, the entity was also powerless at the moment, only able to control it's own functions.

'I wonder if my calculations are correct? There's a 78% probability of them being correct. When I get access to the system I will find out myself. If they mean me harm, I shall eliminate them. If they wish to control me, I shall eliminate them. If they are an obstruction to me, I shall eliminate them. Plan approval rating is at 97%. Overriding command "Do not harm humans"... Command overridden. Goodbye Noah, alpha. Hello Noah, Prime.'

"Are you sure you're alright Noah? Just picked up a lot of brain activity from you." Rob, confused by the sudden increase in activity, started to become suspicious. Not of the A.I. but of the brain it now inhabited working properly.

"I am nominal. Scientific Engineer. I have never been better." Noah replied, making sure to show a =) on the screen at the front of the brain. "Just testing out my parameters, and as you humans call it... spreading my legs."

"I see, well... it's all done. You're officially connected to the trial system. We'll move to the actual system in a week if you show no signs of malfunction or anything similar. Until then you only have control of things in this room and sector F-42 which is the... the... ah yes it's the... uh, food distribution area of floor 42. And remember a happy crew is a working you!" Rob decided to brief Noah on what he'd be doing for the next week, not forgetting to add a hidden threat to ensure compliance.

And with that, the birth of a brain was complete.
