Sapphire
I listened to his speech and couldn't figure out whether to embrace him or slap him. I felt that he was sincere and had learned his lesson. But I was still angry.
"I want to go to the dudgeon's and see the survivors before I answer you," I told him honestly.
Until I knew how much damage had been done I couldn't bring myself to forgive him, not yet.
"I understand," he said taking my hand and leading the way. When we got to the opening he led me down a large spiraling stairway. I instantly felt the temperature change when we reached the bottom.
There were more survivors than I thought. The cells were packed and I was surprised they could move in them. There were so many people. Luckily the cells were large otherwise I don't know where he would have placed them.
I was glad to see the kids were left out along with the pregnant women. At least he wasn't heartless enough to consider them a threat.
I sighed a breath of relief when I saw all five of my girls and our parents alive and well. I really don't think I could have forgiven him if they were hurt.
"Sapphire," my mom screamed reaching through the cell bars. I ran over to her.
"Release them what are you waiting for?" I said to River.
"I can't my love. Not until they officially become part of the pack," he said sternly.
"How does that happen? I thought since you were officially alpha of both packs they would automatically become a part of it"
"In some packs that is true but in this one we are a bit more cautious. Since there is normally animosity after a war not all pack members want to become a part of an enemy pack. There tends to be some bitterness especially from those most loyal to their former alpha. To be safe we conduct a ceremony so new pack members can pledge their loyalty."
"What if they don't?"
"Well there are a couple options. If they are not considered a threat they are free to leave. Maybe join another pack. But they must take an oath not to seek vengeance. Some of course go rogue but they must take the oath as well.
If they are considered a threat then, well I rather not tell you that part. I'm sure you have an idea"
I took in everything he said. It made sense that not everything would be perfect after a war. I'm sure he was right about some people not wanting to join. I just hoped it wouldn't be anyone I knew.
"When will the ceremony take place," I asked.
"In a few hours."
