Swapping Geneive
By: Ploppyreads
Geneive's pov
" Geneive Abernathy, if you don't find your butt downstairs in less than three minutes, I will bring you down myself!" My mother yells.
I quickly lift my head from behind my book, groaning. What does a girl have to do around here to read her book in peace?
Also when did Monday arrive? last time I checked it was still Saturday, strange...
" I'm sick, cough! cough! " I reply in a scratchy voice, hoping that she would believe my not- so- convincing lie.
I hear small patters of foot steps coming up the stairs, and my eyes widened.
I quickly duck under my white blankets, shoving the series of books sprawled out on my bed along with me.
The door harshly swings open and I gulp, holding my breath.
" I know your awake, Geneive...you just answered me," she says annoyed. I could imagine her rolling her hazel eyes, at me.
Oh right....I mentally smacked myself.
I yawn loudly, stretching my already awaken limbs. Opening my right eye, I peek from under my blankets, checking if there were weapons in her hands.
By weapons, I mean shoes, slippers, keys, fruits, anything you name, anything she could get her hands on, she would use.
Seeing empty hands, I pushed the blankets down to my chest, making sure my books were safely hidden.
She arches her eyebrows, folding her arms.
" Morning mother," I say, smiling sheepishly.
" You're sick?" she asked narrowing her eyes until they were mere slits. She was not buying one bit of it.
My mother was a small woman but, I've learnt to not judge a book by it's cover.
I nod, Making sure to add in a few coughs to prove my point.
" See? I have a cough, " I murmur.
" Oh really and since when do you go to bed with your glasses on?" she glares accusingly.
Oh crap! I forgot about that.
"Y-you don't know? This is a new trend, everyone is doing it," I stuttered, playing with my fingers unconsciously.
I saw her staring right at the blankets and I cough loudly, trying to get her attention again.
" Are you hiding something from me?" she pressed on.
"No, why would you think that, mother?" I replied looking anywhere, but at her. I am so nervous right now, I am sweating buckets.
" Lift the blankets" She ordered.
My eyes widened as I laughed nervously.
" Now is that necessary?" I asked eyeing her, as she stepped closer to investigate.
When she was about a foot away I shouted.
" Stop! I don't want to infect you!" I yell panicking.
She rolled her eyes snatching the blankets with her small hands.
" I'm sure I'll survive..." she glares at me as she completely yanks the blankets off. She stares at books sprawled all over my bed for a few seconds, then over at me.
I'M DEAD...
As she opened her mouth to scold me, and I cut her off.
" Oh my, would you look at that, I'm going to be late for school," I said, looking at my bare wrist.
Springing off my bed I grabbed a random book, and headed straight towards my bathroom, before she could grab me.
I locked the door behind me and let out a breath I didn't even know I was holding. That was close.
After a quick shower, I slowly crack open the bathroom door and poked my head into my room, checking to see if there was any sign of her.
I smirked at the empty room. Already seeing clothes laid on my bed I rolled my eyes.
I'm seventeen years old and still I'm treated like a toddler. It has it's pros and cons. Seeing that my books were untouched, I nodded to myself.
I picked up the plain teal T-shirt, the high wasted blue jeans, my undergarments and quickly got dressed.
Next, I tied my waist length ginger into a high pony tail, and swiped some lip gloss over my lips. The reason why I only wore lip gloss was because everytime I did makeup myself I ended up looking like a beateb raccoon.. Very unflattering.. I'm sure you could imagine.
I walk over to the mirror leaning against the wall next to my door, and gave myself a once over look before I left.
" Hey! there Gen, is it just me or do you look super hot today?" I gush over myself.
I turned around so my back was facing the mirror and patted my butt, those squats were finally paying off. My pancake has moved up another level and is now a bun. What can I say.. I am a hard worker. I do some more sexy poses, and make silly faces.
Hearing a loud snort, and I look up to see my younger sister leaning against my door frame, laughing at me.
My annoying sister Grimary Abernathy is only a year younger than I am, and is a few inches taller, than my 5'3 frame.
We always get mistaken for twins. If I were to get a penny each time someone asked us that, I would already be a billionaire, surrounded by books, living in my own house, DEFINITELY not going to school. Also.. If we were to be twins.. Clearly I would be the better looking one.
We almost have the same physical features. The only difference is that I have silver/grey eyes and she has hazel eyes, also her hair is a bit wavy and I have big curls.
Though I have to say it is quite strange, my mother has hazel eyes and my father has blue eyes... but I have silver/grey eyes. I wonder how that happened.
My face flames with embarrassment, as she continues laughing.
I quickly grab my black glasses off of my wooden dresser, slipping it unto my face, and picked up my black bookbag, slinging it over my right shoulder.
After putting on my white old converse, I join Grimary at the top of the stairs and we both walked down together.
I smell the pancakes before my other senses registers its presence. The homey smell of melted butter reaches my nose and assaults my brain, making my stomach rumble loudly.
My mouth waters as I fasten my footsteps towards the kitchen.
I walked in slowly, hearing my mother humming to a familiar tune.
Unaware of my presence, I quickly snuck behind her snagging a piece of the fluffy, tanned, warm goodness off of the stack before plopping it into my mouth. Tastes better every time.
She turns around placing the plate stacked with the warm prizes into my hands.
" Don't think I forgot about this morning, missy " she warned.
I groaned ," Why is life so frustrating, Tyler doesn't have to go to school, his parents are okay with him staying home," I grumbled.
" Who is Tyler?" My dad curiously asked from the couch. "Your boyfriend?"
" Dad no.. He's a... book character, " I said. I know, it's ridiculous. I hear a snort, and roll my eyes knowing exactly who it came from.
" Well when you're kicked out of your apartment for not having enough money to pay for your rent, or you don't have any food because you don't have any education or a job, I hope ' Tyler' could help, cause I wouldn't" He replies going back to reading his newspapers with a smug look.
My mouth falls open and I roll my eyes going to sit next to my sister. Unbelievable.
I take a deep breath of the pancakes in front of me, savouring the smell.
Hasn't anyone ever thought of making pancake scented candles?
" Can you just start eating? You look like a creep sniffing the pancakes," Grimary said in between bites of her own. I stuck out my tongue at her, telling her to be quiet.
I ate as quickly as I could and was about to go back for seconds, but my mother practically pushes me out of the house, stating that Grimary and I would reach late if I continued eating.
" I wonder where all that food is going," she murmurs before shutting the door.
" It's not my fault I have a fast metabolism," I grumbled rubbing my flat stomach.
Grimary and I walk to school. It's only a 15- minute walk, but by the time I arrive, I'm wheezing, out of breath.
Instead of buying us a car like every other child's parents would, my parents said and I quote.
'Walking home from school would be a 'great' exercise for you girls since you're so lazy' end quote.
Which I strongly disagree to. I am not 'lazy' I just prefer to conserve my energy, for more important things. The important things? .. I'm not sure as yet..
Also, what exactly would we be exercising!
If we lost any more weight, we would be able to turn side wards and disappear.
My sister rolls her eyes at my dramatic behavior, before jogging off, to her group of friends, leaving me to vent to myself.
I reluctantly headed inside seeing Riley and Aubrey already hanging out by our lockers.
Riley has straight black shoulder length hair and green eyes with pale skin, and Aubrey has blond big curls, Hazel eyes and has a natural tan.
How do boys not chase after them?
Riley spots me first, but I put a finger up to my lips. Telling her not to say anything.
I silently creep behind Aubrey, as she is currently telling Riley about the latest gossips she heard.
" Boo!" I yelled in her left ear causing her scream, startled.
This caused some students nearby to roll their eyes at our childish behaviour.
Aubrey playfully punches my shoulder, then proceeds to tells me the latest gossip between Luke Brenman and Jessica Hermes.
Luke Brenman and Jessica Heart, The ' perfect' couple that everyone can't seem to shut up about.
They have been on and off for years, but apparently he caught her cheating last week, and broke up with her again. It's very amusing to watch really..
I'm giving them a week before they'll be back together.
See? this is why I'm single. Being in a relationship is too stressful and time consuming for me, not that anyone would would date me though.
We decide to head to class before the bell rings, and see Luke already with some blond girl lip-locked pushing his tongue down her throat. Our faces screwed up at the sight. Ok maybe it will take a little longer than a week.
" I hope he finds what he's looking for," Aubrey whispers, making us laugh.
Our eyes widen as we saw Jessica a few feet away, crying, with her minions comforting her.
Thee audacity!
You would think she was the victim will all those crocodile tears.
" Oooh lala I sense drama," Riley sings excitedly. Riley stops to see what is about to happen, but I grab her by her shirt collar dragging her into Math class, despite her protests.
I sit down in the back of the class room and Nate takes a seat in front of me, making me sit straighter. I stare at the back of his blond head as if in a trance. Nate.. Oh Nate! The guy that nearly all the girls simp over. He was popular, and he was kind- sort of.
He hasn't spoken to me before , but at least he doesn't bully me like the other popular children do.
6'0 , Broad shoulders, captivating electric blue eyes, sharp facial features, with a dimple on his right cheek and a smile that could melt the coldest of hearts.
No wonder, a lot of girls has a crush on him. I may or may not have also.
Aubrey elbows me hard. Ow! I rub my side, turning to scowl at her. ' What was that for' I mouthed.
She only smirks, pointing her pencil towards Nate, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively.
" Nate and Geneive sitting on tree doing things I've never seen," Riley sings.
I would strangle her if I could but, unfortunately there were too many witnesses. Lucky.
" Shut up," I whispered. My face felt hot, as I nervously glanced at Nate, hoping he didn't hear anything.
Our professor starts talking before she could say anything else to further embarrass me.
He begins teaching and I try my best to take in what has was saying about Algebra, but most of it goes over my head. My gaze wanders back to Nate. Would he want to be friends with me?
I doubt that..
As if sensing my gaze, Nate turns around. I quickly avert my eyes, going back to 'writing'.
" Um... can I borrow a pen, I think my ink has ran out," he says holding up an empty pen, as if to show evidence that he was telling the truth.
I look up and see him staring at me. Oh..he's talking to me.
" Which person comes to school with only one pen? Stupid," Aubrey mutters, writing her notes. Riley shoulders, shake as she does a bad job at hiding her laughter.
Oh the joy of having friends. My friends..
I smiled at Nate, fetching a new pen out of my bag handing it to him.
" Thanks, " he smiled, showing off his dimple.
" Um....s-ure, no problem," I said, blushing when his fingers slightly brush against mine. Fudge pie!
" He only asked for a pen, but she looks as if she's been asked to be his girl," Riley teases.
" Geneive and-"
" Continue that and I will tell josh that you have a crush on him," I warned her.
She quickly shuts up and I grin, finishing my notes. Peace and quiet.
" Are you excited that we're graduating in a few months?" Aubrey asks as we sat down.
It was currently lunch time and the cafeteria was packed.
" And leave all my hot admirers behind? no way, " Riley said going in for one of my French fries, but I swat her hand away.
" Get your own," I mumble pulling my tray closer.
" Since when do you have ' admirers' much less hot?" Aubrey asked, raising her brows.
" Since in her dreams, apparently she hasn't woken up yet," I replied, popping a fry into my mouth.
" Good one," Riley sarcastically says, taking a big sip of her sprite.
" I know," I reply cockily.
" I'm not in a rush to leave, though," I answered Aubrey's first question, eyeing the popular table. I wanted people to notice me before I left high school at least once.
Everyone always trys their best to get the tables surrounding that table. Unfortunately we arrived a little late and the only table available was the one near the trash can. And the scent was unbearable..
" Look," Aubrey says, excitedly pointing.
We see Jessica walk into the cafeteria will her chin held high, of course with her minions behind her.
" Well someone's attitude has drastically change, from this morning," Riley says, taking another a sip of her sprite.
Everyone eye's are on her, eagerly waiting to see what juicy things would happen.
You could feel the tension sizzling in the air as they shamelessly whisper, pointing accusing fingers at her.
She strides up to the popular table and sits next to Luke. She starts talking to him, but he pays her no mind, continuing to chat with his group of friends.
Since our table was far back, you could barely hear anything.
You could see smoke, shooting out of her ears, as she was being ignored. This was probably ' torture' for her.
I suddenly had the urge to pee and I tell Riley and Aubrey I am going to the restroom, rolling my eyes as they waved me off, not taking their eyes off the scene in front of them.
While passing the populars table, someone sticks their foot out, causing me to lose my balance.
Every thing was in slow motion as I fall, shutting my eyes tightly, as I knew what would come next.
I fall with a thud and my glasses falls off my face, breaking as it makes contact with the ground.
My vision blurs and I bite my lip, fighting the urge to spout some rude words.
Deep breaths..
The cafeteria erupts in laughter and I remain on the ground not wanting to get up. If only there was a hole right now, I would gladly crawl into it. Riley and Aubrey runs to where I am, picking me up.
" Are you okay," Aubrey asks and I nod, dusting myself off. I glare at Jessica and she smirks raising her eye brows, challenging me to say something.
" I'm sorry, I didn't see you there," Jessica says unapologetically, her eyes filled with amusement.
I was so sure she did that on purpose, so all the attention would be off her.
Riley was about to say something but I shake my head stopping her.
I pick up my cracked glasses off the floor, looking at Nate. Was he okay with her treating me like this?
He quickly looks away ignoring me.
B-but I lent him a pen.. A new pen... My favourite pen..
I forced a smile at Jessica and throw my glasses at her. She gasps horrified, making me roll my eyes.
Dramatic much? Last time I checked I was the one who got tripped, and glasses broken!
" Since you can't see properly, you'll need this," I said turning around, walking out of the cafeteria. They'll see...
