Moving back to Woking after spending a few months in Southampton and when Ciaran return, he landed the perfect position as a duty manager for a family entertainment centre. Ciaran was familiar with the centre and all its attractions from bowling to laser quest, as well as pool tables, amusement centre and an under five soft play area, they even have an adult gaming area, as well as this Ciaran's role also included a reactive role with the hotel adjoined, it was owned by the same person and he was a highly shrewd man with "Making money" as his third and final point in the business's mission statement, "Safety" being number one and "Have fun" being second.
When it comes to fun Ciaran is someone that can create the right environment for all ages and when it comes to Ciaran's energy there is no comparison, it attracts people in and makes them feel safe, he shares his energy with people that came whether it be a child or adult and the more they felt like this, the more they spend so that's point two and three sort.
Once Ciaran completed a three-day training period at another site with their general manager, he then went and assumed his role at the site he is to manage. Ciaran loved it, his previous role managing a golf club house restaurant, he volunteered as a children's party host at the weekend, he would fulfil his role managing the service at the bar, as well as the duty manager shift which there is an emergency reactive role, he would have two or three booked during the day and he would change in to a pirate costume to keep with the pirate themed crazy golf course, as well as these roles Ciaran was the Fire Health and Safety Officer and learned a lot in this employment that will come in handy at the family entertainment centre.
During the first week of his employment, Ciaran easily identified over twenty fire-extinguishers that either beyond their service date or out of date completely and the trouble with an out-of-date water fire-extinguisher, if you discharge the water, you are very likely discharging a pathogen gas called Legionella and this will cause severe problems for your lungs. The life of a water extinguisher is six years but in them six year the extinguisher will be discharged multiple times and that will cause movement stopping the water from going stagnant.
This was the first issue he was able to identify, from untrained staff in C.O.S.H.H., safe guarding, G.D.P.R., the place was failing apart and what really got to Ciaran was a customer approaching him to tell him there was a hole in the netting of the under-five soft play area and that it was large enough for a child to fall threw.
Ciaran immediately closes the area and after making a quick assessment on the estimated cost of repair, he tried to call the owner which his direct report and the health and safety officer for this site though he spent most of his time in foreign countries, Ciaran tried to call twice and when he didn't answer, he sends a message and when the owner does reply, he refuses to authorise the use of duty cash to repair the whole and tells the handyman to close the hole with cable ties.
It was clear the owner was not willing to spend any more money on this site, it is to be closed and moved to another plot in the town centre because the local council plan to demolish the building, this business is one of eight in the block. Ciaran's theory was that because he appears to be the only person concerned over to several dangers around the building, if he leaves the risks grow and if something was to happen because of one of these risks, he wouldn't be able to live with himself, all Ciaran had to do was wait until the business moves, the building it is moving to is currently under construction making everything brand new and safe.
It had only taken another month for Ciaran to be triggered so much that his loses his patience, he had started at ten am and towards the end of his shift he receives a call from a duty manager from another site that was on the rota for the evening shift, he is not going to make it and there isn't anybody else that can cover, is he okay to close. Ciaran agrees because the other option is to close.
As then sun settles and the evening energy builds, all the bowling lanes full with families and couples on dates, the arcade area full with children running around while Ciaran is behind the bar pouring a pint and then a loud crash, Ciaran looks to the direction of the sound and it was the two pre-teen boys he saw first, they look up and Ciaran follows, it was then he saw the flood of water coming from the ceiling.
Ciaran jumps in to action first turning the music off and the main lights on, taking control with a loud, clear and confident voice he instructs those on the lanes to head to the reception desk where a colleague will provide them with vouchers, Ciaran then heads to the other side of the centre and evacuates that end and closes the entrance that side, instructing everyone on the way to leave as soon as possible, the area surrounding the flood is full of arcade games and if he doesn't turn of the electric soon the risk of a fire or electrocution.
Those not part of the evacuation team had been tasked with finding buckets that could be placed under the flood, between the glass bottle bins behind the bars and the rubbish bins it didn't take them long, not that all the customers had left and the building is closed, Ciaran tells all the staff to finish, because Ciaran had to turn all the electrics, he was left with the emergency backup lights to create enough visibility but because he and his colleagues just spent hours around flashing lights, it made sight in low light harder and he didn't want to risk anybody getting hurt.
Again, Ciaran struggles to contact the owner and when he does, he was told by the owner that he has just sat on the plane for his flight to Germany, he tells Ciaran to continue emptying the buckets and get quotes from plumbers while he was on his flight. Well in to the night when the owner contacts Ciaran after landed, Ciaran had several quotes the cheapest being eleven hundred pounds, the owner refuses and tells Ciaran has to manage it during the night and he will get the usual plumber in the morning.
The problem with this is Ciaran's next starts at ten am, he also decides to climb in to the crawl space around the flood to try and stop the flow of water, he could but he was able to slow it down. Now that he is covered in used shower water, he contacts his sister to ask if her and her boyfriend could bring him some clean clothes and once they did, he goes in to the hotel and grabs a room key so that he could shower.
It was eight-thirty in the morning when the plumber arrives and within thirty minutes the and stopped the leak, all they had to do was refit a junction cap and once I informed the owner this had been done, he sounded so happy and even went as far as to say he is going to tip them a hundred pounds.
The plumbers were on their way out the cap came lose and it started to flood again but they fixed it immediately but then the pressure built up the same and burst a pipe further back and this pipe was located above the hotel reception area. Now that the flood has stopped in the entertainment centre, the owner instructs him to turn the electrics back on and open the centre without an electrician confirming it safe to do so, it wasn't until three that afternoon that Ciaran finished his shift.
Ciaran receives a thanks from the owner and after the statement of tipping the plumbers made by the owner, Ciaran was expecting something himself and when payday comes, he looks at his payslip and not only was there no bonus, he had taken hours out of my pay, this is because the maximum number of hours is sixteen and there has to be a minimum of eight hours between shifts, during that shift Ciaran worked continuously for twenty-nine hours.
Ciaran snaps, he is so angry, he vows to get back at him and Ciaran knows just how to, it doesn't take much planning and has both prime opportunity and enough time to not only get out of the country, but he had planned it in such a way that he would have a minimum of a two-hour head start in Europe.
