Chapter 26 - Underground Hallway

Ye Ningjie dodged the arrows that were trying to target her several times. Currently, there is only one man left for her to face. The other four men had fallen unconscious due to the effects of the poison powder she sprinkled.

She jumped behind the temple pillar, which was made of big wood. A cold grin didn't leave her lips. Her right hand gripped her dagger, which was dirty with someone else's blood.

"Young lady, hiding will not save you from me." The man in black tried to take a step closer. He had discarded his bow and replaced it with a sword.

Ye Ningjie closed her eyes to feel the enemy's footsteps getting closer. Her sense of hearing became sharper. When the time came, she immediately threw her dagger at the enemy.

Whoosh!

The man was just about to jump toward Ye Ningjie. However, who would have thought that a dagger was actually heading straight for him? His eyes immediately widened. He didn't have a chance to dodge. The sharp dagger ended up piercing his chest.

Red blood splashed onto the floor as the man's body collapsed. "No..." The man tried to take the fireworks from his pocket. However, Ye Ningjie immediately ran over to grab it.

"Don't expect to call anyone else." Ye Ningjie stared coldly at the man. She stepped on the fireworks until they shattered.

"You... you're bound to find a bad ending," the man hissed before finally meeting death.

Ye Ningjie checked the man's condition. His pulse has stopped. Then she turned to the other four soldiers. They had inhaled poison from the black lotus flower. It was a dangerous poison that would paralyze them forever.

The Black Lotus Poison was prohibited from being traded freely. That's because the poison is dangerous. It cannot be neutralized in any way. And this is what Ye Ningjie wants. Because she didn't want these people to tell anyone about her actions tonight.

"Very good."

Ye Ningjie reached into the dead man's shirt pocket to find the key to enter the temple door. It didn't take her long to find it. So, she immediately took it and opened the temple door without any trouble.

"It's not in vain that they have appeared and blocked my path. I can at least get this key and have no trouble breaking into this shrine." She muttered as she pushed open the extremely large and tall temple door.

The door to the temple looked as if it had never been opened. When Ye Ningjie opened it, it immediately made a creaking sound. The fairly dark temple hall immediately greeted her.

Ye Ningjie blew out her lighter. She could smell musty of the very thick dust. They covered the entire floor of the temple. It's very dirty.

However, even though it was dirty, the condition of the interior of this temple was better than Ye Ningjie had thought. The outside was very ugly and broken, but the inside was not. This surprised Ye Ningjie quite a bit.

Then she proceeded further with caution. On the inside, there is a large statue. It was a statue of a man she didn't recognize. And she doesn't care about that.

"Where is the entrance?"

Ye Ningjie tried to search the entire temple. However, the shrine only had one room. There are no doors leading to other rooms. This made her have to think.

"It must be hidden in here."

The temple was deserted and empty. There was only the statue of the mysterious man and a large, empty wooden cupboard. She tried to open it but found nothing suspicious.

"Strange." Ye Ningjie stroked her chin thoughtfully. A few moments later, she tried to walk along the walls and floor of the temple. Unfortunately, that still doesn't work.

"Impossible. The map is impossible to give wrong information," Ye Ningjie muttered to herself.

Finally, her attention returned to the only wooden cupboard in the corner of the room. Her eyes immediately flashed. She quickly pushed the cupboard as hard as she could. It's so heavy. It felt like she was pushing against a stone wall.

"Here it is." Ye Ningjie smirked. The entrance must have been hidden behind a cupboard. So, she had to get rid of the cupboard.

Ye Ningjie took a deep breath. After that, she started pushing the cupboard again until her body was sweating. It was very difficult for her, but little by little, the cupboard began to shift.

Ye Ningjie's guess was not wrong. Moments later, she saw another door behind the cupboard. The door revealed a very dark room.

She immediately stepped inside with great care. This is a small room that reveals a staircase leading down to the dungeons. Without hesitation, she immediately descended the stairs.

Finally, Ye Ningjie arrived at an extremely quiet underground passage. Not a trace of anything. Nor did she sense any human presence. However, she still had to be careful. She was wary of any traps or possibly wild animals lurking there.

The underground passage was quite large. Its height and width reach two meters. The walls are made of stone, which is still very strong. The ruler appears to have taken great care in constructing this passage.

Ye Ningjie walked down the underground passage. If she examines the direction, it really does lead straight to the center of Jin An city. It looks like this really is the right path to the imperial palace.

The passage is straight; only occasionally are there turns. Ye Ningjie finally ran because she was feeling impatient. An hour later, she saw a wooden door that was tightly closed. Her heart immediately pounded. Could it be that she had already reached her destination?

Cautiously, she tried to open the door. However, it is locked. So, she immediately used her dagger to try to open it.

She spent a long time fiddling with the hallway door. Finally, a clicking sound could be heard. She quickly pulled open the door carefully.

A stench suddenly entered Ye Ningjie's nose. She immediately frowned. What smell is this?

The hallway door was ajar. Ye Ningjie could see another room that was dimly lit. The stench became stronger. She could even smell fresh blood.

Ye Ningjie's feelings became uncomfortable. She stuck her head out the door. It was then that she finally saw the vast array of prison cells. Inside the cells were people injured by the cruel torture.

Ye Ningjie's heart and feelings sank. She didn't expect to be ushered into a dirty and rotten dungeon.
