Long,Long ago, in the time of kings and demons, there lived a man named jack.He lived with his wife on the outskirts of a village. Jack was a farmer, and his wife looked after the house. They had a small house and an ox.Jack was wise and hardworking. One day,Jack realised that his wife had been looking very sad and gloomy for sometime. So he went to her and said, Dear wife, what is wrong with you and why do you hang your head like this in sadness? You have everything you want. Why can't you be cheerful like other women?" The wife answered,Leave me alone,I will not tell you the reason," and started crying.Jack thought it was not the right time to talk,so he went away.A few days later,he again asked the reason for her sadness. But,for a second time,he got the same reply from his wife. However,Jack did not give up and pleaded again and again. The wife at last said,Well,if you really want to know,I will tell you. There is no luck in this house——no luck at all!" Jack was puzzled to hear this.He thought that he had always been very lucky in his matters. He said, what has happened dear?Does the cow not give enough milk? Do the fruits on the tree not ripen in time? The wife said,No,all that is fine. How can the fruit and the cow bother me.Dear,we have no children and that makes me sad. Then Jack realised the cause of her misery, and from that day,he too grew depressed.Seeing him so gloomy did not make his wife feel any better. Many days passed like this. There was no happiness in the lives of Jack and his wife. After some weeks had passed,Jack thought,It's no use feeling sad and doing nothing to make matters better.I would go to the wise man for help.'So, he left at once to meet the wise man,who lived a day's journey away from his own house. The wise man was sitting outside his house,When Jack reached there.Jack fell on his knees before him. What makes you so sad?asked the wise man.I have no children, and that really worries my wife and I. We have everything but no children! My lord, bless us with many children ". Take care what you are asking for ", replied the wise man. Will not many children be a burden to you?Are you rich enough to feed and clothe them?" Only give them to me, my lord, and I will manage some how!said Jack ". Well then,Your wish will be fulfilled," said the wise man. Go back home now."Jack reached home that evening, tired and dusty, but with hope in his heart. As he drew near his house, a sound of shrill voices struck upon his ear,and he looked up to see the whole place full of children!
