Today was the day of reckoning for the Zurich police force.
Zurich had always enjoyed excellent public security, exceptionally so, but a very rare shooting incident just occurred. The police hadn't even fully arrived at the scene, which was just beginning to be cordoned off when a dozen officers watched, powerless, as two individuals drove a stolen car into another hotel not far across the street.
The sound of gunfire that followed could be heard clearly even from a great distance away, continuous bursts of shooting.
Witnessing two police cars chasing the suspects to the hotel entrance, those officers who were setting up the police line began to worry about the safety of their colleagues.
To go in was to risk danger, but they also had their duties to fulfill.
The officer with the highest rank on-site was almost in tears; he was brave, but the responsibility now was more than he could bear. He really couldn't bear it.
