If it had been Mayock who discovered Mike and reported him to the boss, then giving an unconventional tryout, the credit would have been Mayock's.
If it was an assistant coach who unearthed Mike, then they could be considered Mike's benefactor, and everything from coaching to management would still be their designated duties, anyway, credit was definitely due.
But now things were different.
Mike was given a tryout on the direct orders of the Raiders Team owner, regardless of how convoluted the process had been. Because it was the owner's directive, the manager and the coach just had hard work to show for it.
The one with a keen eye for talent was Mark Davis. Mayock and Gruden were merely executing the owner's wishes, and that made a huge difference.
