John awoke, and in fact, he had come to shortly after the amputation, only to fall back into a deep sleep. Now, as he regained consciousness, he truly awakened.
Gao Guang and John shared a special bond, a special kind of affection. They never had a particularly close personal relationship, which was rather odd, but they were like a couple who had been married for years, devoid of excitement in each other's company yet inseparable.
"You're awake, right on schedule, according to the doctor."
John blinked, then paused while his blank mind retrieved its memories. He immediately looked toward his left leg, or rather, where it used to be—he saw nothing.
"My leg hurts so much."
Gao Guang was taken aback before asking, "Is it the wound that hurts?"
"No, my whole leg hurts!"
"But your leg is gone..."
Gao Guang realized his mistake as soon as he had spoken and quickly added, "I'll call the doctor."
"Don't bother."
