Monchi was a born warrior; he started as a greenhorn, enlisting and, after four years, applying to join the SEALs. He made it into SEAL Team on his first attempt at the training trials and spent seven years as a SEAL, commanding a squad for five of those years.
Monchi didn't have the makings of a commander capable of leading massive armies into battle, with education determining his ceiling. He could only ever command a squad-sized unit for his entire life.
That being said, Monchi was exceedingly familiar with squad-level combat. He could plan a small-scale special operation with his eyes closed.
When to advance, when to withdraw, which battles were winnable, and which were not - if he couldn't discern these, he wouldn't deserve to be among the best of base-level commanders.
Just like now, though it galled him, Monchi knew the fight couldn't go on.
