IPSC stands for the International Practical Shooting Confederation, and since this organization was established first, the shooting competition style became conventionally known as IPSC. Therefore, mentioning IPSC doesn't only refer to the shooting association but broadly refers to a whole category of shooting sports.
Another influential shooting association is IDPA, which was founded by a group of people who felt that IPSC was becoming too commercialized and was drifting away from real combat shooting. However, as many years passed, IDPA also became more commercialized, but it can only be said to be a little closer to real combat shooting than IPSC.
