Chapter 23 - The Calm Before The Storm

Such events brought a deep frown upon the handsome angel's unblemished face. All six wings extended out as they began to glow. A sword of light formed out of thin air, and without hesitation, he swung it in Terran's direction.

"What could I have possibly done to make this feathery chicken so violent?" While he was confident in his healing, he did not fancy being chopped in half without reason. Additionally, the danger he felt from the light was something he had never experienced. Whether he would survive or not did nothing to change the fact that he would first have to experience his body being burned out of existence if the light touched him.

However, before the blade of light reached Terran, two people appeared. They were both around the age of twenty. One was a Burly young man draped in thick shadows. He had already been swinging a tenebrous chain before he had appeared, and it was only an instant later when his chain wrapped around the blade of light. Although for a second, it looked like the light would cut it like butter, shadows surged down the chain and reinforced it. Slowly, the chain began to pull the sword of light out of the angel's mental grasp.

"Tch, pitiful." The angel scuffed, clearly annoyed.

Just like that, the light blade disappeared. If only for a second, it looked as if the angel was actually at a disadvantage. And yet, that second did not last for long. Soon, dozens of light blades materialized in the air behind the angel. Terran was shocked at what was happening. Who were these people? Why were they helping him? While he appreciated the thought, at the same time, he felt it was dumb of them as they would now die a dog's death. For their actions had been pointless, only delaying the inevitable by mere seconds.

While the man was clearly strong to have blocked the angel's attack, it was painfully apparent who was stronger by comparing the two's facial expressions. A few beads of sweat had already coagulated on the shadowy man in a single clash. Meanwhile, the angel just seemed slightly annoyed. Yet, when the light shot forward, no blood was spilled. Instead, Terran's vision completely shifted as the room they were in disappeared altogether.

Terran did not consider how the two had appeared in front of him as all of these occurrences had been happening too fast. Only now did he see that the second person had appeared with their hand on the shadowy man's back and now had her hand on the barrier that contained Terran.

"Teleportation?" Terran thought with realization.

The second person that had appeared was a young woman. To say she was a beauty would be doing her an injustice. She was easily the best-looking girl he had ever run into. Granted, he had only been around people for less than a week. Naturally, while not obsessed, as a teenage boy Terran noticed these things.

Silver hair fell to her shoulders, passing by her crystalline blue eyes and rosy cheeks. Meanwhile, her outfit clung tightly to her lily-white skin, highlighting her slender curves.

Thankfully, Terran's appreciation could not last long as his surroundings drew his mind out of the gutter. It was no exaggeration that surrounding him was no less than an entire army.

Although it was difficult to gauge, Terran estimated that there were at least a few thousand people. However, they were not in uniform, nor did they stand in much order. The reason that Terran labeled them an army was because most of them held a weapon of sorts. That, and many were covered in scars, clear evidence of accumulated battles they had been through.

Something to note was that many of these weapons were engraved with runes, while others vibrated with power, releasing a slight glow. Seeing these runes, Terran made a mental note to try and learn more about them. Previously, he had only known that they were a median of sorts to help him absorb others' blessings. Of course, this was a good enough reason alone to learn them. However, he had assumed it was something out of his reach. Only now, in the past few minutes, had he seen them used to confine him and sap his lifeforce while additionally empowering all sorts of items. Seeing them used on a broader scale made him realize they were obtainable.

Suddenly something clicked in his mind. "The sky! There is no barrier in the sky!" What did this mean? It meant that they were not in the Oasis. Nonetheless, mana filled the air. "Was my déjà vu just a coincidence?" It was now apparent: the environment, the fact that every soldier seemed to be around the age of 20, and finally, the angel. Was it an event from the war against the angels and the beasts? But did this mean this wasn't his past? After all, the war took place over a century ago. But then why did this event seem so historically accurate?

Without warning, a harsh voice interrupted Terran's questioning. "Oi, idiot! Why didn't you grab the treasure? We didn't come here to save some kid!"

"You think we did so on purpose? He was the only thing in the room! Unless you wanted us to bring back that cursed angel known as Gabriel!"

"Dumbass, you might as well! He'll be here any second!"

Ignoring the other man, the one draped in shadows turned towards Terran. "Kid, you were locked up in there. Did you manage to see or hear anything about where they're keeping it?"

However, the boy could only shake his head, deciding to keep quiet as he was still a bit lost. Nevertheless, a few puzzle pieces were slowly slipping together in his mind.

At this moment, the skies shook, and the six-winged angel appeared. This was not all as following were half a dozen other angels. Yet, unlike the one called Gabriel, the others only had one or two pairs of wings.

"Shit, speak of the devil."

Terran could swear that Gabriel was staring directly at him despite the thousands of people around him. Apparently, he was not the only one to think this as the shadowy man commanded.

"Hayley, get the kid out of that cage. Although I don't know why, it appears that Gabriel wants him. Whatever that reason is, it cannot be good for us!"

Without hesitation, the silver-haired beauty that had teleported them out of the room placed her hand on the runic barrier confining Terran.

Now directly in front of him, Terran took a second look at the girl who could only be in her 20s. "Is that my teacher? No, they don't share the same name, but they certainly look alike." The woman in front of him closely resembled a much younger version of Silvia, the teacher that had just introduced him to trials. However, he quickly dismissed the thought as it was impossible and could only be a coincidence. This event had to be at least 80 years in the past, if not more. Even then, it was entirely possible this was just a scenario constructed by Gaia for the purpose of giving him a trial. While his new teacher Silvia was old, she was at most in her late 50s, and it was a fact that being blessed did not increase lifespan.

Unfortunately, Terran's thoughts were cut short as a clear and resounding voice vibrated through the air, causing every hair on his body to stand on high alert.

"Such insolence! I, Gabriel, the archangel of the one true God, graciously allowed you cattle to have your little rebellion, and what do I get in return? You interfere with the business of the holy and steal what is not yours! Every last one of you will now face divine retribution for your sins!" Hypocritical words vibrated across all the lands, originating from a being that could only be identified as a higher existence.

With a wave of his hand, the sound of a thunderous crack filled the air. The angels behind him mirrored his actions as space itself tremored. Black lighting crackled in the surroundings. However, this was just a temporary misconception, the jagged black lighting was no lighting at all. Instead, they were cracks, actual cracks in space that were quickly expanding as a holy golden light started seeping out. Standing over 50 meters high, Golden portals split the space surrounding the army as a ghastly pressure filled the air. Despite the scene, none of the humans filling the field showed any signs of backing down. The only emotions occupying their faces were determination and anger. This was because they were the strongest humanity had to offer. Many lost their parents at a young age or did not even know who their parents were. They were the product of the farms, and unlike the trillions of others, they had been given the power to fight back. Most had trained for the past decade, fighting countless monsters on numerous battlefields. Only now were they finally face to face with those that had silently tugged the strings that gave birth to all their misfortune and suffering.
