Chapter 39 - Caleb is broken

Today is the beginning of the final holiday week. I was looking forward to the beginning of school. I wanted to meet new people, but I was most excited because we would go to the same university. Jadon took lots of responsibility and got me new stuff for the start of school, but he gave me no room to refuse.

He would say he liked me dressed well and that he would feel bad if I kept refusing. At the end of the day, I had no choice in the matter.

He seemed busy trying to do most of his work this week, so I gave him some space. I went to visit home just to get the idea of what was going on. I would have to do at least that much before I entered school.'

Jadon's POV

I was working on some stuff on my computer just to get ready for school. It was weird how I got used to living with Caleb over the summer. I must say there are times when he would make my heart flutter, but I could say over time we were together I developed an immunity to his charm and good looks.

I could say he was more of a friend than a love interest now. But the difference now is that we were really friends. Not the ambiguous relationship we held of dependence and benefit. Now I had no more doubts about it.

This summer has probably been the best time of my life. Caleb has no idea.

I needed to get this work out of the way. I was so engrossed in the codes and the continuous rhythm of my fingers typing into my computer that I lost track of time. I was shocked to see it was already dusk when I finally finished. When my body finally relaxed, I was so fatigued that I could not resist sleep. I fell into my dreams soon after.

Knock! Knock! Knock!

I was woken up by the inconsistent knocking on my door. My camera system showed that it was Caleb standing outside. I knew he had a key, so it was weird for him to knock. Even weirder that he did not use the alarm.

I opened the door to be faced with a listless Caleb blankly staring at me. His eyes looked lifeless. I had never seen him like this, so I panicked. Make things worse is that he was drenched from head to toe.

I took him by the hand and pulled him in. I helped him take the wet clothes and put on warm dry clothes. I put him on the sofa, set the electric fireplace on and ran to get some water from the kitchen.

"Have you eaten anything?"

He simply shook his head.

"Are you hurt anywhere?"

Again, he shook his head.

"What do you want to do first? Eat or rest up?"

He shook his head.

I realized that he had not said a word since he got home. My heart started to beat faster. I was worried but at the same time I swore to finish off the people who made him into this sorry state of himself. How dare they touch what was mine?

I stiffened at my own thoughts and looked at him. I guess it came to this. I tried my best to keep calm. At the very least, for Caleb, who probably would be scared. I had to calm down. I took a deep breath and sighed.
