Chapter 1 - Is it possible for her to love?

Su Wan was sitting near the pond in their mansion counting the red fishes as they emerge from the water. Her brother passed by and sat near her. He asked "Wan Wan what are you doing here?" she didn't answer and continued with her counting. He wasn't angry with her for he was used to this. His sister was a calm individual who rarely expresses how she feels (if she do feel at all). He has always wondered what made her this way. As a child, she was always laughing, dancing and she loved talking with him and her friends. As an older brother, he felt bad whenever someone badmouthed her. Even their mother rejected her because of her nature. Apart from him, only her father loved and cared for her but he is no more. The day their mother chased Su Wan, she was only 12 and he was 18 at the time. It was not long after the death of his step father, Su Wan's father. Their mother didn't care for many things in life apart from herself and appearance. When she had Su Wan she was so happy, as she saw in her a companion for her later years. Also, many priest said she would be a blessing for the family as she was born on the day it rained and snowed simultaneously. In her youth she was very intelligent and smart which made her mother more proud of her. She used to show-off to her so called 'friends' with her 'genius daughter' as she used to call her. But one day when she was 8, she went to the bush to carry some fruits and came back with some scratches as a totally different person. He knew she was still his sister but without her joie de vivre and her light. They tried asking her what happened but they never got an answer. She became a closed up individual and no longer excelled in school something that their mother didn't like. When their father died in a road accident 2 years later, their mom decided to send Su Wan to a boarding school in Spain but she was sent back 2 months later. She tried other schools but never did his sister last more than 2 months, so she decided to send her away to an orphanage. He was in boarding school when it happened and wasn't aware. After his graduation he came back home where his sister was nowhere to be found. He searched all around his quarter and then to all orphanages but couldn't find her. He left his mother in search of his sister as she never told him where Su Wan was and swore to never come back.

Today, almost 8 years later he was happy with his sister in their small paradise. He had worked hard to provide her with all what she could need or desire and he was proud of himself. When he found her, she was dirty and wounded all over. She had spent at least 4 months in the streets living alone with no means of fending for herself. He felt so bad on that day he swore never to let her feel that way again. His sister was his world and he is not sure he could live without her.

"13, 14, 15…" she counted the fishes as they jumped out of the water. Her favorite color was red and fishes are the animals she liked the most. She may not smile or tell him things but he knew her so well. It was rare that something spiked her interest and whenever something does he makes it a duty to make it available to her. He always wondered whether she knew what love was. He loved her with all his soul but wasn't sure if she did love him or anyone. Before her father died, he was the closest one to her but when he died she never once cried or ask about him. She just continued on without expressing any change. He didn't know if someone who didn't understand the realm of feelings could love. But that is his biggest wish in life. For her to feel as full as he does when he is beside her, when he knows she is healthy and fine. He wants for her to know the joy one can feel when the person he loves above all is happy.

"It is already late, let's go inside." He said to Su Wan who immediately got up and channeled toward the parlor. She followed his orders so mechanically that at times he felt as if he coerced her into doing things.

He followed her into the room and served dinner. After that, the watched some TV and went to bed.
