Chereads / The Immortal Duan Cai / Chapter 38 - Chapter 37

Chapter 38 - Chapter 37

After escaping the crowd that had been watching him play the violin in the park he found himself quickly pacing himself down the sidewalk with the violin in his hand. His mind was scanning his surroundings to make sure that nobody was following him when he suddenly caught notice of a familiar face. She was in her skirt and pink hoodie while walking in his direction from up ahead. In the moment it took him to contemplate what to do she had already caught sight of him causing him to pause in taking any motion to avoid her.

"Duan Cai!" Shea blurted out his name in excitement at the sight of him. When she realized her own excitement her face flushed slightly and she turned her head to the side. Her hand slowly tucking her hair behind her ear as her flower pin was carefully holding up her bangs.

"It's getting dark, Shea. Should you not be heading home?" Duan Cai asked as he looked up at the sky and could tell it was already getting late. He wondered what luck he had that he always had to bump into her during the later hours when they were on the street. The last time he met her like this was when she dragged him off to the park and right now that was the last place he wanted to head back to.

"I was out shopping." She replied as she noticed the violin in his hand. "Do you play?"

"Ah? Yes, I do." He glanced down to see what she was looking at.

"I'd love to hear it some time." She smiled at him while he could tell that she was debating on what to say to him. A nervous expression was so easy to read on her face when it came to Duan Cai.

"Would you like to get something to eat, Shea?" He asked with a sigh as he could tell from her expression that she was not willing to easily part from him. Though he was not able to understand her emotions that easily he simply could not tolerate the idea of wasting time on the street while waiting for her to come to her senses.

"Y-Yes!" She blurted out quickly as if she had not taken a moment to consider the question in the slightest.

"Alright, let's head to The Humming Tome." Duan Cai stated the first place that came to his mind when it came to heading for food.

"The.. The Humming Tome?!" Shea couldn't help but repeat the name of the place that Duan Cai had stated out so bluntly to her.

"What's the problem now?" Duan Cai asked as he tried to figure out why she was getting so nervous over the place he named off. He could not understand why she was acting so strange in front of him now.

"N-Nothing! I'm coming!" Shea shouted as she quickly followed Duan Cai as they headed for The Humming Tome.

The Humming Tome was a large business. At it's bottom floor it was a beautiful restaurant that served mostly the elites of society while above the restaurant the business itself was one of the most high classed hotel businesses in the city. Of course when Duan Cai invited Shea to eat at the Humming Tome he was simply hungry for some food and in his mind it was the best option because it was another business he had gained ownership of within the city. He had no idea that in the eyes of a girl like Shea that the mere thought of the expense of the place was rather nerve wracking to think of.

Most of the time while they were eating Duan Cai was silent and enjoying his food while Shea could not control her nerves and kept fidgeting. The site of it caused Duan Cai to wonder what was wrong with the girl, but in his mind she was still just a simple mortal who probably fussed over every little thing. His way of thinking was on a whole different level than a mortal who would worry over the simplest things. By the time they were actually done eating at the Humming Tome it was already dark outside causing Duan Cai to contemplate over what to do with Shea. The city was no place for the girl to wander alone in the dark, but he did not feel like wandering the streets either just to help her find her way home.

"Wait here.. I'll get us a room." Duan Cai stated bluntly without the slightest flicker of emotion in himself as he simply wanted to avoid unnecessary problems. No hint of understanding towards Shea's feelings were able to be read by him in that moment.

"Wh-What?!" Shea panicked at the thought not sure what Duan Cai was trying to imply in that moment why telling her such a thing.

"What's wrong with you now?" He asked her as he saw her face flush red in embarrassment by his words.

"You.. You said.. Why?" Shea's heart was pounding hard as she tried to figure out what was going on with Duan Cai to imply they were going to stay the night at the Humming Tome. She couldn't get herself to even form a proper question to ask him why he suggested it.

"It's late and it's troublesome for us to just waste time wandering the street. We're simply resting here for the night instead of wasting my time all over the place just to walk you home." Duan Cai blurted out his reasons behind getting a room which seemed to calm Shea down as her blushing diminished, but at the same time there was a slight frustrated look on her face as if she wanted to slap him. Her state of emotions was still a puzzle to Duan Cai and he could not figure out why the girl suddenly looked angry with him so he gave up and walked over to book them a room without giving her a further word about it. He felt nothing towards the situation even though inside Shea was panicking in more ways than one.
