Chapter 27 - The Mission

I got to the school canteen before those two and so I found a table by the end of the hall and sat down but before then I had ordered my lunch. I ate the food while I waited for them.

"You couldn't even wait for us to come," the demon girl said as she and Ruben approached me. She had a frown on her face as if someone wronged her.

"Why should I wait for the both of you?" I asked and then continued to eat my food.

"Tsk! Whatever!" She mumbled and walked away.

"So tell me, why did you ask me to allow her to stay by our side?" I asked Ruben the moment the girl left.

"She's a demon just like us and so we need to keep her close by just in case," Ruben replied.

"Are you saying that she could be a threat to us?"

"Not exactly. She's a demon as well and I'm sure that she is not stupid enough to expose us."

"Then why?"

"She'll be a good tool for you in the future, be a little patient and ignore the fact that you don't like her."

Perhaps, I'm been too worried about unnecessary things. Maybe she won't be a threat to us because she'll be affected but what if something bigger happens? Then if this is the case, I'll need to keep her within eye reach.

Soon, she came back with a tray of food and then she sat down opposite me.

"Aren't you going to say something?" I intentionally asked. Since she came back, she hasn't said a word to me like she used to.

"What is there for me to say?" She asked back and began to eat her food.

"You haven't introduced yourself to us, so?"

"That's because I wasn't given a chance to do so!"

"I see. . . How about now? Introduce yourself to us."

"Hmph!" She scoffed and bent her head to eat.

Seeing her attitude, I could not help but sigh. "Are you telling me or not?" I questioned.

"My name is Lucy Quinn!" She responded and then looked away.

"Very well then, Lucy. My name is Ezekiel and this is Ruben. Since you so much want to be around us, I'll give you that privilege but there is a condition attached to it."

"Which is?"

"Never cross your boundaries!"

She stared at me for a while after I might have said this and then began to smile, "Shouldn't I be the one telling you this?" She asked.

"Hmm—"

"Kiel!"

While we were still talking, I heard my name being called and turning around, I saw Eva and her sister approaching us.

"Kiel," she called again and suddenly hugged me.

It took me some seconds to come back to my senses as I was taken by surprise, she had her full cherries tightly pressed to my chest and her arms tightly clasped around my body. I looked at the others and they were surprised as I was.

"Might you let me go? I can't breathe properly," I spoke.

"Oh! So–sorry!" She said and pulled away, her cheeks already red.

"It's okay," I told her with a smile. "It seems you are fine now, right?" I asked, staring at her.

"Yes, I am! It's all thanks to you," She replied shyly. "Sean is dead?"

"What do you think?" I asked back.

"It's a good thing he's dead, otherwise he will keep causing trouble!"

I looked at her and seeing the anger on her face, I shook my head and didn't say a word. Just like she said, the boy deserved to die or I won't be able to rest at all.

"Who is she?" She asked, turning to look at Lucy.

"She—"

"My name is Lucy and I am his friend!" Lucy replied, cutting through my words. She briefly glanced at me and then back at Eva, "And you, who are you?" She asked her.

"My name is Eva and I'm his close friend," Eva replied.

"Since we both are his friends, I hope we get along well," Lucy said with an outstretched hand.

"Sure!" Eva replied and then shook hands with her.

"It's good to see you girls becoming friends, it'll save me a lot of stress," I spoke as I stood up.

"What do you mean?" Eva asked.

"Catch up with me after you are done with your lunch," I turned and said to Ruben and then left.

After break time was over, everyone returned to their classes to start the next lessons. Our next lesson was on magic and so we got prepared and were waiting for him. Soon after, he walked into our class and the first thing he did was look around for me. When he spotted me, he smiled briefly and then became serious again.

"Today, I won't be teaching you guys!" He announced as he stared down at all of us. "For those of you that are now able to cast basic spells, I want you to keep practising and also cultivate to reach other levels of your magic. And for those that haven't, don't lose hope yet and keep trying, one day, you'll be able to cast your spells. Well, the term is almost finished and your exams are fast approaching, for those lazy students, you better get prepared to repeat classes."

"But, sir, what about the test we took in the portal?" A male student stood up and asked.

"What test?" Sam asked with a frown. "If you want to rely on that, then better get yourselves ready to repeat classes!" He said.

"Huh?"

"Did we not pass at all?"

"I don't think so!"

The students could not help but begin to murmur among themselves, we all thought that because of the test we did in the portal, we won't be doing any exams but now, Sam had given us a little shocking news.

"Quiet down!" He ordered and the class became dead silent. "If you wish to repeat class, then fail!" He spoke and turned to leave the class. He was about to step outside when suddenly he halted and turned towards my direction. "Meet me in my office, just you!" He spoke and then left.

"What have you done?" Ruben asked immediately after the teacher left.

"I don't know," I replied with a shrug and then stood up and carried my bag, "Let me go and find out," I said.

"Should I follow you? Just in case—"

"I'm not a kid," I replied, cutting through his words. "You can wait for me here or better still, go home. When I'm done, I'll come over to your place."

"You better don't keep me waiting for long!" He replied.

I nodded and left the class, I made my way towards Sam's office and when I got there, I knocked on the door.

"Come in!" He spoke and then I pushed open the door and stood before him. "Take a seat!" He said and I did just that. "I have a mission for you!"
