Karma woke up in a panic. His heart raced a mile a minute. The room was dark except for the lamp near the bed. Jynx was not in bed with him anymore. He rolled over to see where she had gone. He soon found her as Jynx was leaning against the wall near the phone. Karma was confused. Was he dreaming? He asked her, "What is going on? Why are you over there?"
She did not respond. Karma sat up and looked at the video cameras set up. Suddenly he remembered. The recordings! He looked at his watch. It was 3:06 a.m. It was after 3 a.m. Once again he looked at Jynx and said, "It's passed time." He stood up and walked over to her relieved that nothing had happened. Jynx was clearly disturbed. She stared at him with uneasy eyes. Karma put one hand on her shoulder and said, "Don't worry, it's me. I didn't wake up to make a phone call."
Jynx replied. "I know." There was an odd pause in her sentence. Then she said, "You already made the call and laid back down 40 seconds ago."
Karma did not respond. Was she telling the truth? He had absolutely no memory of it. Why would she lie? Karma turned his attention to the video camera. He rushed over to the camera. It was still recording. He pressed stop and rewind. The camera had a built-in video screen so he could watch the footage. Jynx followed him over to the camera but did not say anything. Karma pressed play and watched.
The video was just footage of him and Jynx sleeping next to each other. He fast forwarded it to the timestamp of 3:00 a.m. At about 3:02 a.m. Karma stood up and walked to the phone. At the same time, Jynx stood up too. She backed up to the wall and watched. She must have been expecting this to happen. Karma had a full blown conversation with someone on the phone is Eastern Slavic. Then he returned to the bed. Karma pressed the stop button on the video camera.
Karma angrily walked over to the phone and grabbed the recorder. He unplugged it from the phone line and put it on the table. While rewinding the tape, Jynx said, "You can't…"
Karma exploded on her, "I can't?! I can't what? I can't listen to the phone call that I made?!" Without another word he pressed the play button.
Jynx reached over and turned the volume down to zero. Then she responded, "No, the sound at the beginning. Remember the squelching sound? It stuns you." After a few seconds she increased the volume so Karma could hear the conversation.
The Eastern Slavic voice said, "Name and location?"
Karma responded, "Agent Death. In Ukraine."
"What is your current mission?"
"Return to Mirage HQ with stolen documentation."
"Stolen documents from Exstrusis?"
"Yes."
"Where is HQ?"
"Budapest, 29th and Ciutadella St."
"Good work, Comrade. Return to sleep, forget this conversation ever happened."
The call ended.
The recording was over. It was short but it said enough. Karma was destroyed. He put both hands on the table and leaned over. The tape continued to play but no sound came out. Karma pushed the stop and rewind button. He waited for the tape to stop rewinding. When it did, the button popped back up with a loud click. All the evidence was right in front of him. There was absolutely no denying it anymore. He was a sleeper agent. He was the secret agent that no one could ever find. Hidden in plain sight. He was Agent Death. Everything he had worked for in his life was all for nothing. All the suffering of his friends and allies. It was all his fault.
Jynx tried to calm him. She said, "Are you okay?"
Karma shook his head, "We never did get a picture of Agent Death. Some people said he was too good to be caught on camera. Nobody knew he was in the room. I should have looked in the mirror."
Jynx put one hand on his shoulder and said, "It's okay…"
Karma pulled away from her and cut her off, "It's NOT okay! I am a fucking sleeper agent! I just gave the enemy the address to our secret base! HQ! Over the phone! I just killed everyone there. I have been leaking information to the Soviets since 1984! That's four years! How many lives have I ended? I am simultaneously the number one agent in Mirage, and the number one on their most wanted list at the same time!" Karma ran himself out of breath.
Jynx said, "So now what? You just accept that you are a monster? This wasn't your choice. You have been manipulated. Isn't there a chance Freeman would understand?"
Karma fell to his knees. Tears began to form in his eyes as he said, "No, that's not the way this business works. Treason is the highest crime imaginable. Punishable by death. Traitors get no mercy."
Jynx's eyes bulged for a second then she said, "Okay, that's pretty serious. Then we go with option B. We lie. I am the only person who knows your secret. I will take it with me to the grave."
Karma went quiet. He took a moment to weigh his options. Finally he dried his tears and started laughing. He stood up and said, "No, I can't. I won't. I won't let you lie for me. This is my battle and I will end it myself."
"End it how?"
"Will call Freeman and tell him everything. I will read him the paperwork front to back and fax it to him if he needs it."
"Then what?"
"Then I will go back to HQ for my… Judgment."
"That doesn't sound like the safest plan."
"It's not. In fact, I can almost guarantee I will end up in a bag floating down river."
Jynx threw her hands up and said, "Okay, well then I am going to have to repeat, this doesn't sound like the safest plan."
"It's not. But it is my only option."
"No it isn't! Can you not hear me?!" Jynx was getting upset. "I will lie for you! This never happened. Those files don't exist. We can just move on like this never happened."
"But it did happen. I just gave someone the address to HQ. They will raid HQ tomorrow or the next day. Are we just going to forget that? I can't just let it go."
"So that's it? You are going to turn yourself in to Freeman, get yourself tortured, and interigated. All that until he puts that one final bullet to the head? Is this the best choice?"
Karma stood up and reached out to Jynx but she stepped away from him. She didn't agree with his willingness to end it all. Karma replied, "It is. I can't go on as a sleeper agent. I can't continue hurting the ones I care about. What happens when you are the one that is hurt next? Do you think I can live with that?"
Jynx rushed over to him and held him close. Then she looked him in the eyes and said, "We can call Freeman and warn him about the raid. Then we will run away from all of this! We quit Mirage. We leave it all behind us. We don't need any of it. All we need is each other. Nobody will ever know."
Karma held her back. He was torn between the truth and the woman that wanted nothing more than to be with him. He ran his fingers through her hair for the last time. Jynx had tears welled up in her eyes as he said, "It doesn't matter if no one knows. I will know. I will know that my friends… Piper, Yankee, Quartermaster, and even Virgo are dead because of me. I can't live with that guilt. Not even with you. I would be a monster if I said that I could… I'm sorry." With those final words, Karma let go of Jynx and walked over to the phone. He started to dial Freeman's number.
Jynx had to catch her breath, this was really happening. He was making the call. She walked over and pushed the button on the receiver stopping his dialing. She looked at him angrily and said, "You are such a hypocrite! All this time you have been talking about putting the mission first, not caring about your friends and fellow agents, but you DO! Do you care so much that you would rather die than save yourself? You would rather die than live with the pain?!" Jynx was in full tears as she said this. Then she added, "What about my pain?! What about the ones you are leaving behind?!"
Karma watched as she withered with sadness. Either way, he was ruined. There wasn't going to be a happy ending. He removed her hand from the receiver and as he said, "I wish I could undo the past. Maybe I would have been nicer to you when we first met. But this is something I have to do. You are going to have to forgive me for this."
These words only make Jynx cry harder. Karma kissed her on the forehead and picked up the phone again. He started to dial the number as Jynx wiped the tears from her eyes. She looked at the tape recorder and said, "You're gonna have to forgive me too." In one swift motion, Jynx pressed the play button on the recorder. Karma looked down at the machine but didn't realize what she was doing until it was too late.
The piercing squelching noise played. It was his trigger. Karma immediately stopped in place. Jynx ripped the phone out of his hands and pushed him back against the wall. Karma did not blink, his eyes glazed over. He was in input mode.
Jynx said, "I have some new orders for you, soldier!"
Karma mindlessly replied, "Yes."
"You are no longer an informant. No more 3 a.m. phone calls. Got it?"
"Yes."
"Agent Death died in the facility. You killed him. Understand?"
"Yes."
Jynx thought for a second, then she finished with, "You found evidence that HQ is going to be raided. You need to warn Freeman."
"Yes."
Jynx let go of him and said, "Good job Soldier, now you will forget everything that happened in the last 12 hours."
"Yes."
"Wake up."
Karma's frozen stare wore off almost immediately. He blinked a few times and looked at Jynx. He looked around the room and said, "What the hell? Why is it so dark outside?"
Jynx smiled and wiped the tears from her eyes, "Are you okay?"
"Yes, I am fine." Karma put his hand on Jynx's shoulder and asked, "What happened to you? Why are you crying?"
Jynx shook her head and replied, "Sorry, I have been worried about you. You haven't been yourself since we left the facility. Are you sure you feel alright?"
"I am okay, I think." Karma pulled her in close and said, "I don't remember it getting dark outside. A second ago, we were literally sitting over there looking through the files."
"I am okay, I think." Karma pulled her in close. She was shaking. He could tell something was very wrong. He responded, "I don't remember it getting dark outside. A second ago, we were literally sitting over there looking through the files. Now I am standing here." Karma looked at his watch. It was 3:10 a.m. Then he asked, "Did something bad happen?"
Jynx was so happy that he was back to his normal self. But she wasn't out of the woods yet. She thought for a second then answered, "Yes, you have been acting strange for a while now. I think you might have breathed in some of the gas from the facility. We returned to the hotel then we faxed all the documents to Freeman. You don't remember any of that?"
Karma held her close and said, "No. That is so strange. I guess it is not important. At least we are both safe." Karma's mind flashed back to the facility. He immediately panicked, "Oh my god, the facility! HQ! We have to call Freeman!" Karma reached over to the phone and dialed Freeman. Jynx backed away and let him do his thing. Karma waited for Freeman to pick up the phone. When he did, Karma shouted, "Bravo Kilo one niner! Freeman you have to get out of HQ. Exstrusis knows your location!"
It wasn't Freeman, the voice on the phone was clearly Opal as she said, "Sorry, Karma. Freeman is sleeping."
Suddenly another voice could be heard in the background. "I'm awake, I'm awake. Ho shit. Who is it?" It was definitely Freeman. Opal attempted to cover the receiver with her hand, but Karma could still hear them talking. Freeman said, "Hold on, keep him talking. I need to find my pants."
Opal returned to the phone and said, "Hey Karma, Freeman is just waking up, can you give him a minute?"
Karma put the pieces together really fast. Opal answered the phone in Freeman's office before Freeman could get out of bed. On top of that Freeman was walking around in front of Opal with no pants on? Then he said with a smug smile, "Hey Opal, do you commonly answer the phone in Freeman's office while he is sleeping nearby?"
She responded with a short, "Yeah."
"Good to hear, Opal." Karma waited patiently for Freeman to take the phone. As he waited, Jynx started to pack up their things. Surely after the phone call was over, they were going to head back to HQ as quickly as possible. As she was packing up, Jynx picked up Agent Death's file from the nightstand and discretely dropped it in the trash can. It was no longer needed. Karma was a better person not knowing. Just as she said before, she would lie to keep his secret. Even from him.
Karma was still waiting patiently when Freeman said, "Jesus, Karma it's 3 a.m. This had better be important."
"Oh, it's not that important," Karma joked then he continued with, "I just wanted to tell you that Exstrusis knows the location of HQ and is probably on their way to raid the building as we speak. I don't know of you consider that important or not."
Karma and Jynx's plane finally touched down at the Budapest airport. Karma looked at his watch. It was 6:09 a.m. They had left the vehicle and all of the gear at the hotel. The defense of HQ was their highest priority. Getting off the plane Karma and Jynx collected their bags and found the exit. Karma scanned the area for a taxi. Instead, he saw the Lincoln town car pull up next to them. He looked in the window and said, "Umm, you're Apex's recruit? Raptor, right?"
The man behind the wheel replied, "I was Raptor, my ID got flagged in Bulgaria. My new call sign is Mason. Hope we gotta run."
Karma and Jynx climbed into the back of the car as Mason drove away from the airport. Jynx asked, "Hi Mason, good to see you again. Where is the new HQ?"
Mason replied while he was driving, "We don't have one set up yet. Freeman wants to make sure everyone is safe before we move to a new location. To be honest, we left HQ so quickly I doubt everyone even got their stuff. I think I left behind 4 hours of sleep."
Karma asked, "Sorry to hear about that. How is the training with Apex going?"
Mason made a face but didn't look away from the road. Then he said, "Bad, Apex is the strong silent type. I am more of a talker. I feel like I am having a conversation with a brick wall sometimes. We mix together like… like two things that don't mix well." Mason looked at Jynx and said, "Jynx, I am not sure if you are interested, but Freeman said you and I can switch if you want. You can be Apex's recruit. I can be Karma's recruit. How about it?"
Jynx shot a look at Karma then she replied, "That doesn't sound like a trade up, Mason. I will have to pass on that offer."
Mason drove the car over to Calcru Hotel. He parked outside room 109 and everyone climbed out. Mason walked over to the door but before he could knock Freeman opened the door and said, "About damn time, everyone gets in here."
Karma, Jynx, and Mason entered the room to find a full house. In this one room there were seven people waiting for them. Everyone was talking over each other but Freeman shouted, "Everyone shut up! We have ten agents in one room right now. Let's not waste time on idle chit chat." Freeman turned back to Karma and asked, "Karma explain to the group why you believe the HQ location is compromised?"
Karma put his bag down on the bed and looked around to all his familiar faces. Freeman, Opal, Hetz, Gearbox, Texas, Lunar, and of course Apex in the corner. Then he said, "To be honest I am not sure. On the way out I accidentally breathed in a little of the Psych10 gas and I lost a bit of my memory. But I remember that they had the address to HQ. They wouldn't sit on that information without acting on it."
Hetz replied, "Maybe they have the address, but they don't know what is in it? They might think it is just a warehouse?"
Lunar angrily shouted at Hetz, "They could think it is the bloody Kremlin for all I care! If Exstrusis knows the location, then I am not staying there. Are you crazy man?"
Apex stood up and said, "Let's be logical for one moment here. How about we look at the facts? Let's just assume that they have our address. In order to raid our building, they need a lot of people, armor, and guns. They just lost their facility in Chernivtsi, Ukraine. So, they are shorthanded. Freeman, how long do you think it would take them to launch a raid on us?"
Freeman shook his head and said, "I don't know. If they are slow, then they could be here at noon today, maybe sooner."
Karma spoke up and said, "I just gave you everything I know. I am sorry I don't have more information."
"You don't know shit, do you?" Texas harshly responded.
Everyone started bickering again, but Freeman raised his hand and said, "Enough everyone!" He looked at Jynx and said, "Jynx, my little weapon cleaner. You were there in the Exstrusis Facility with Karma, Indigo, and Leo. Indigo is dead, Karma inhaled gas, and Leo claims he never went in the front door. Therefore, you are the only other person we can trust to answer this question. Does Exstrusis have our HQ location? Did you see the address?"
Jynx was put on the spot for a second then she said, "I don't even understand why you are asking." She pointed at Karma and continued, "This man saved my life three times in the last week. He carried me over his shoulder to safety while being shot at by Exstrusis Agents! And I am sure he would have done it for everyone in this room. No, I did not see the address. But I don't need to. If Karma says he saw it then I believe him. He has no reason to lie. We are all a team, what benefit would come from lying?"
The room fell silent for a second, then Freeman said, "Okay. I am convinced. We are moving HQ. I will get on the horn and find us another place to live. Everyone go back to HQ and load up everything you can. And make it snappy."
Karma, Jynx, Hetz, Gearbox, Texas, and Lunar all exited the hotel room. Before Karma could get in the vehicle, Apex grabbed him by the shirt. "Before you go, I gotta ask you some questions." Karma turned around waiting for something hurtful to be said, but for the first time in a while Apex was sincere. He asked, "Does Exstrusis know, that you know, what they know?"
"About the address?"
"Yes, do they know that you know?"
"I don't think so. The facility was destroyed. How would they?"
Apex looked at Mason and said, "Wanna play a little game?" Mason and Apex laughed for a second but then stopped when they saw Karma was not in on the joke. Apex said, "Come with me." He walked back into the hotel room and tapped on Freeman's shoulder.
Freeman was on the phone talking to someone about the new locations. When he was done, he hung up and said, "What's going on?"
Apex smiled and said, "Permission to do a Tokyo surprise, sir."
Freeman instantly got a sour look on his face, then he said, "Why? And why would I do such a thing?"
Apex explained, "Karma said that they don't know that we know about the raid. Therefore, we can set up an ambush just like we did in Tokyo. They think we are going to be surprised, but in all reality, they are the ones being ambushed."
Freeman shook his head and replied, "I can't authorize this kind of thing. There will be 20 or 30 plus agents kicking down our door with full body armor, helmets, and assault rifles. Even if we had the same load out it would be a numbers game. Our forces against theirs. If we lose a single agent in the ensuing gun fight, then it's an unnecessary loss of life."
Mason butted into the conversation, "What about a bomb? I know how to rig up claymores."
Later that night Jynx and Karma were sitting on the rooftop across the way from the HQ. Karma was watching through the telescope while Jynx was laying on a blanket nearby. She rolled over and stretched. She let out a little groan when she did it. Karma looked at her and said, "Hey there's a sleepy head. I have been waiting for my naptime."
Jynx got up and walked over behind Karma and gave him a hug from behind. Then she said, "See anything yet?"
"Yeah, I saw a beautiful woman sleeping nearby."
"No, I mean through the telescope, smarty pants."
"Oh, no. It's just our old HQ. Hard to imagine they would take this long to raid our building. It's almost like they don't care about us. Unless they are waiting for nighttime intentionally. That would be a smart choice." Karma looked at his watch. It was 10:22 p.m. Then said, "It is getting really late."
Jynx saw him looking at his watch then asked, "You like your watch?"
"I do. It reminds me of you." Karma turned the telescope a bit, then looked at Jynx and said, "I think we have company." Jynx immediately crouched down on the roof next to him. "Karma picked up the radio and said, "Mason, Apex, do you copy?"
Mason answered the radio and said, "We are here. What's going on, Karma?"
Karma replied, "Three black vans approaching the front of HQ. They are driving slowly and looking super-duper suspicious." Karma watched the vans slowly come to a stop near the side of the warehouse. The doors opened on the vans and at least 20 men piled out of the vans. Karma picked up the radio again and said, "We have at least 20 targets. Each one has body armor and helmets. I hope you packed some extra explosives."
This time Apex answered the radio and said, "We didn't half ass it, Karma. Just give the word when they are all in the building."
Jynx peaked over the edge of the build to look at the raiders. Then she asked, "Should I watch this?"
Karma watched as the 20 some raiders lined up by the front door. Then he shook his head and said, "Every one of them came here with guns loaded to kill everyone in Mirage HQ. In my eyes, there are no innocents down there. They are about to get hit with some…" He smiled and looked at Jynx, then he said, "Karma."
Just then the raiders pulled out a battering ram and with two swift hits, they broke the front door down. All of them piled in through the front door. When every last man was inside, Jynx and Karma both ducked their heads. Karma pressed the button on the radio and said, "NOW!"
With a flash of white smoke, a popping sound, and some broken glass the building went silent. Karma looked up to see if anyone came back to the front door. Nobody. Not even one person left the building. Karma looked at Jynx and said, "Okay, pack it up. I'll be back in a second."
Jynx protested, "Oh no you won't! The men were armed to their teeth. You are not going down there."
Karma kissed her on the forehead and said, "They WERE armed to the teeth. They are all dead now. We have to survey the damage. Trust me, you don't want to see this."
With that Karma walked over to the stairwell and climbed down to the street below. He pulled his silenced Glock from his holster. Karma checked the vans to make sure they were empty. When he was sure, he looked in the broken windows of the warehouse. Inside he could see Mason and Apex standing over their bodies. He shouted at them, "It's just me! I'm coming in."
Karma walked into the building to the sight of a horror movie. Blood and body parts lay all over the room. The 20 men had been ripped to shreds. Karma covered his nose so he wouldn't have to smell it. Then he asked, "How many claymores did you put in here guys?"
Apex smiled and said, "Enough." Mason and Apex were searching for information on the bodies. They rolled one over looking for a wallet. Then Apex said, "We were expecting 30 to 35 men. We packed 15 claymores at neck level. Trust me, it was a painless death. Much less than they would have offered us."
Karma nodded then walked back over to the door. He said, "Well if it's alright with you. I am not taking any of the credit for these kills. You can hand over their IDs and tell Freeman that your plan worked."
Apex laughed as he pulled another wallet off of one of the dead bodies. Then he said, "What's the matter Karma? You lost your edge?"
"I guess I have, Apex. You have fun." Karma returned to the front door and walked back to the Lincoln town car. Jynx was there waiting for him with the engine running. He climbed into the passenger seat and said, "We are done here. Let's go." Jynx did not say a word, she just drove away.
Dec 8th, 1988. Karma and Jynx had taken a back seat to the investigation. After all, their jobs were done. In the weeks after the Exstrusis Facility raid, all the documentation was sent to the CIA. The documents were in turn used as leverage to get Gorbachev removed from office. Naturally, Gorbachev was furious. The KGB's failures and the Exstrusis Program's downfall were now blemishes on his cabinet. To save face, Gorbachev handed off the Exstrusis Program to another General. General Petrov saw the state of affairs in the program. Their facility was destroyed, and over half of their agents were dead or missing. Not to mention that the mind control program had been completely exposed. It was only logical that the Exstrusis program was liquidated and shut down.
Karma and Jynx watched the whole thing from their hotel room as it all played out on the 6 o'clock NEWS. Gorbachev ordered the withdrawal of 500,000 Soviet troops from Europe back to Soviet soil. This was a dream come true. The fruits of their labor.
The following day Karma and Jynx returned to the new HQ building in Lisbon. Freeman offered Karma a drink just like they had done at the beginning of this whole mess. Freeman said, "You know, I asked you here to tell you the good news." He pulled out a piece of paper with two lines for two signatures. One of which Freeman had already signed. Then he said, "This is the problem with our business. If you ever get too good, you can effectively work yourself out of a job. I am sure you have heard by now, but the CIA is shutting down Mirage. We only have a few more weeks left."
"Yeah, I heard." Karma took another drink then he added, "That's good really. No need to waste taxpayer dollars on us sitting around."
Freeman pushed the paper toward Karma and said, "The CIA asked me to come over full time. To be an official CIA agent."
Karma nodded and smiled, "Congratulations. If there was anyone on the team that deserves it, it would be you."
Freeman pointed to the second line on the paper then he said, "They wanted two. There are two job openings available. They told me to bring myself and the most valuable player. I wanted to offer it to you." Freeman slid the paper over so Karma could read it.
Karma didn't read it though. Instead, he said, "No thanks, old friend. You should take Opal with you. I am sure she would love the job."
Freeman shot Karma with a look of contempt. Then he said, "I thought you would say that. I had a feeling you would say no, not for yourself. But for her. Right?" Karma didn't say a word. Then Freeman continued, "Come on, man. I am not as stupid as you think I am. I know perfectly well that when I called your hotel room and she answered the phone, it's not because you two are just close friends. If you know what I mean."
Karma smiled, then he said, "That's it. You caught us, Freeman. Now can you give me a speech about fraternization rules and regulations here in the agency?"
"No, and honestly, I don't care either." Freeman slid the paper toward Karma again and handed him a pen. Then he said, "You have already pulled your weight around here. You could fraternize with anyone, and I wouldn't complain one word. But don't want to see you pass up on this opportunity. You can still see her and work for the CIA. This is your dream job. Remember?"
Karma looked at the paper and put the pen down. Then he said, "Dreams change." Karma stood up and held out his hand to shake Freeman's, then he said, "It has been an honor working with the best."
Freeman stood up and shook his hand. Then he said, "That's my line. Take care of yourself."
With that Karma walked over to the door and left. He walked over to the dark room and looked around for a picture. He only had to look for a few seconds. There it was hanging on the wall. It was a picture of Jynx holding everyone hostage. He took the picture and put it in his wallet. Then he returned to the main sleeping area of the new HQ. Jynx was sitting on a cot talking with Leo. When he walked over, she stood up and said, "Hey, what did Freeman want?"
Karma smiled and said, "Nothing big. We are all fired."
Leo laughed, "Yeah, we knew Mirage was going under a month ago. He called you in here for that?"
Karma didn't answer. He just smiled and looked at Jynx. Then he looked at Leo and said, "It was great working with you, man. Take care."
Karma and Jynx picked up their personal bags and walked over to the door. Before they got there, Karma stopped about 20 ft away. He just looked at the door with curiosity. He was about to walk out and never come back. It was a hurdle in his mind that he suddenly could not jump. Jynx was confused, she looked at him and said, "What's wrong?"
Karma thought about it for a moment then he said, "I never actually thought I would survive to get to this point."
Jynx laughed and said, "Walking through a doorway?"
Karma shot her a glance then he replied, "Not just that. For the first time in years… I am unemployed. I was always looking for the next step. The next goal to achieve. Now here I am without a job or goal, looking out over the vastness of the world and asking myself, what am I going to do with the rest of my life?"
Jynx hugged his arm and said, "Don't know." She took his hand and pulled his arm towards the door and said, "But whatever it is… We will do it together." Karma held her hand. He wouldn't have it any other way. Then they walked through the door together.
