"Is this what's going to open our collars?" Asked the miner who'd stayed with him, he startled the rest of the group.

They too couldn't believe what they were hearing. Their gaze now focused more on the object than on the strange wyrmfolk. 

Arthur had more scratched the beastcore than rewritten over it. He'd saved a lot of time by taking care only to cross out the unnecessary runes. 

Arthur nodded as he rose to his feet. He showed the beastcore closer to the miner, who still hadn't caught his breath. "Adding a line to a letter changes its meaning; the same goes for runes. There, only this one remains, 'host'. And I will use it indirectly to get us out of here."

The group almost took offense at his confidence. But their doubtful feelings became more severe when they saw Arthur go over to their dead, rip off an entire forearm with his foot, and tie the beastcore with a piece of cloth inside the corpse's hand tetanized into a clutch.
