Tears blurred Mia's vision again, she stared at Kahlan, scanning her with her red rimmed eyes to see if she was truly okay.
She couldn't say anything! She just couldn't bring herself to say anything! She could only turn her face away in silence.
Why was Kahlan's life so difficult? She thought. Who on earth did she offend in her past life to live such a life.
"What is wrong Mia? My goodness, what are you thinking about now? hmmm? Tell me. Don't cry."
Mia burst into tears on hearing Kahlan's words.
Kahlan looked at her best friend in confusion. How can she cry so easily? Did I go too far with the teasing?
"Mia come on now, look at me, I'm fine." she paused, looking around and attempted to climb off the hospital bed.
"Just look, I will jump, for you to see I'm fine"
Before her feet could touch the floor, Mia immediately held her arm stopping her from climbing off the bed. Panicking she exclaimed.
"What are you doing, your fever has not gone down yet. Lie down already. I know you are fine"
Kahlan heaved a sigh of relief inaudibly and grinned at Mia almost immediately. She too wasn't in the mood to jump now, she could faint okay!
Kahlan decided to let the matter lie and not pry for more details. She really felt tired now and she knew Mia was no where close to telling her anything.
She and her friend share a tacit understanding and she clearly knew when to stop. She met Mia in the college her father and stepmom sent her to in Bologna.
Then, Mia's mom had sent her to their country from the states because she was "rebellious" in her words.
Mia's mom and dad had just gone through a very terrible marriage before they finally got a divorce from each other.
They both got married to different partners later making it hard for their daughter to adjust to the new development.
She lived with her mom and stepdad, causing trouble here and there. Getting into fights and becoming her mother's worst nightmare.
She immediately sent her away when she bore a son for her new husband. Leaving Mia to her ex-husband's family in Italy.
Kahlan could still remember the day she saw Mia. The arrogant hussy walking into the classroom with an overbearing aura.
Her little face was so charming and cute but her hair was dyed in purple and green giving her a rascally look.
She looked like a cute thug, chewing her gum and ignoring the curious looks from her classmates.
She stood in the middle of the class looking around for an empty seat.
She immediately walked towards an empty seat beside Kahlan and sat down haughtily.
Unknown to Kahlan, Mia was also reminiscing about the past.
She remembered how they got together as friends after Kahlan rescued her from some silly bastards in school that wanted to rape her. With recorded sound from police siren, She scared off the naughty guys and walked out of the dark grinning at Mia mischievously.
"You owe me one" she said. Turning around, she walked away disappearing into the dark night without getting a thank you from Mia.
Only God knew how scared Mia was that night but Kahlan saved her nonetheless.
She couldn't stop the tears from falling from her eyes. She knew that girl, the quiet one that was always bullied by her friends in the class.
They said she was a weakling yet she saved her from a snare. They said she was useless, yet she cleverly chased the idiots away.
Yes she was weak but strong. She wasn't a weakling in the mind like her who only exercised authority on the outside.
As it is always said, It's only the weak minded people that sought influence over others with brute Force.
She found out Kahlan was an astute lady with a strong mind.
