It is unknown whether the person called Wayne actually cleaned up the area but both Laurence and Faye were able to leave the building without encountering any zombies. It was only when they reached outside did they realize how serious the situation was. Faye had to push down the urge to vomit his intestines out with how strong the smell of the rotten flesh are. Laurence saw how pale Faye had become and worry was written on his face.
"Are you alright?" Laurence asked. "Try to get used to the smell because it looks like we are going to be stuck here for a while."
"I know... Don't worry. I will try not to hold you back," Faye replied. "In any case, where do you think Subway Station 3 is? Is it far?"
"Considering how Wayne acted, it shouldn't be. We can try to walk around the area and see if there's any signboard or better yet, a map. Along the way, we can try killing some zombies," Laurence said in a serious tone. He saw how Faye was about to complain so he quickly added: "It's good for you to practice, Faye. Don't worry, I will help you. Here, take this."
Faye stared at the knife in Laurence's hand. The knife were stained with a dark colored liquid after being used to kill the zombie earlier. He hesitated to take it but thinking about how they are going to be stuck in this world, he agreed with what Laurence said. If he were to survive and not hold his friend back, he should learn the necessary skills. And that means, killing zombies.
Making up his mind, he carefully grabbed the knife from Laurence and held the handle tight. "Wait, if I take this, then what will you use?" he asked. There was only one knife that got transported along with them so now, Laurence has nothing to defend himself with.
"Don't worry about me. I will manage somehow," Laurence replied as he looked at their surrounding. The world was a wreck, and the area where they are at can be considered a mess. Not long after, Laurence seemed to saw something on the ground that interest him. He quickly walked towards it and picked up a steel pipe that was around one meter long. He swung it a few times before he nods his head in satisfaction. "This will do," he murmured to himself. "Alright, now I have a weapon myself. So you won't have to worry anymore."
"Are you sure that's enough? Maybe we can go and look around nearby shops? Maybe we can go to a restaurant again! Who knows if there's more knives there," Faye suggested.
"Are you addicted to hoarding knives?" Laurence said in a joking tone. "As much as I would like for us to have more knives, I don't think there will be anything else remotely useful as a weapon left in this area," he added. "Let's just go find that station. If we ever find anything good, then it's our luck. If not, it is also fine as long as we are alive."
Faye no longer tried to convince Laurence after hearing such reasoning. Plus, he trusts Laurence's decision. Growing up together, he understood that Laurence never made decision that is not beneficial to himself. And whatever he wants, he will strive to get it.
The duo left, following the sidewalk path. They encountered few wandering zombies and in order to let Faye have a feel on killing zombies safely, Laurence would be the vanguard and attack the zombies first.
At first, Laurence broke all four limbs of the zombie so that it would be rendered immobile before telling Faye to come over to kill it. He also told Faye where it is most effective to strike so that the zombie would die immediately. Fortunately, Faye could adapt so Laurence can easily guide him. After few more zombies, Laurence then increased the difficulty for Faye. This time, he only broke the zombie's two arms so that Faye has to try and attack a moving zombie.
Of course, Laurence kept a close watch while Faye dealt with the zombie. After all, it wouldn't do if his friend were accidentally bitten. This continued for a while but whenever they encountered a group of zombies, they would avoid them.
If he were alone, then Laurence would not have any problem dealing with them but with Faye around, he doesn't want to take a risk.
Few hours passed and they still haven't seen anything resembling a subway. The sky is starting to get dark and with their vision affected, Laurence felt that it would be more dangerous for them to stay outside. "Faye, how about we find a place to stay for the night?"
"... where? Do you think that there are places that are... habitable?" he asked.
"Well, look around us. There's a lot of buildings. We just need to find a building with an intact door then simply barricade them."
"Alright. Should we do that?"
"Yes. But we also need food if we don't want to starve through the night..." Laurence stared at Faye who is currently wiping his knife. "Faye... how about we split up?"
As soon as Laurence suggested that, Faye's expression changed and he looked at Laurence in panic. "You want... to go alone? Isn't it dangerous?"
"Worrying about me? I'm actually more worried about you! I'm reluctant to let you go alone but if we don't split up, it might get too dark by the time we find a place. By then, we have no choice but to stay hungry," Laurence explained. "But, if we decided to go and find food first, we may not have time to find a safe place to stay the night. Worse comes to worst... we may end up being a zombie food."
"But... what if we find a super market and just stay there? There should still be some food left there, right? And we can just barricade the doors there?"
"I've thought of this but considering the state of the buildings around us, I don't think the super market is in a very convenient state..."
While they were discussing, they didn't notice that there were a group of people eyeing them. They were padded from top to toe with makeshift armors made of cotton(?) and they each held a variety of items which are used as weapons.
"Bro, those two people... are they the newcomer that the system just announced?" one of them asked in a whisper.
"They should be. Look at their clothes, still quite clean. Considering how we couldn't clear this world, maybe the system sent two high leveled champion over..." another one replied.
"Then, they should have more gifts than us, right? Who do you think their patron is?"
"They haven't used any of their gifts yet so we can't be sure. In any case, it won't be too late to kill them once we found out who their patrons are. We can't risk angering a patron that is very vindictive."
"But that knife seems to be very special. It's been used to stab zombies for a while now and I have yet to see it getting dull. Maybe its a magic tool given to them!"
"I think so too. I would love to have that..."
"Hey! Watch it! I was the one who saw them first so I call the first dib!"
Their conversation turned even more heated while Laurence and Faye are still trying to figure out the best way to deal with their current situation. In the end, Laurence decided to go with what Faye suggested and they both went together to find something for them to fill their stomach with.
As they walked away, the group who had been eyeing them had also reached an internal consensus. The ownership of the knife will be decided with a roll of [The Chance Cube]. When the time comes, they will summon [Diceus] and asked them for the die. Things that are decided by this die is absolute so once the ownership of the knife has been chosen, no one can take it away unless the new owner willingly gave it up or killed.
