Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Took My Heart

Does this even count as a fanfiction? I don't read much of those...

This story takes a few months after Trials of Apollo: Tower of Nero.

I have not read the series in quite some time, so please correct me if I'm wrong on some things. I am planning on re-reading to refresh my memory when I get the chance.

Walking past the dusty streets of New York City, Annabeth was on her way to hang out with Percy and the rest of the gang at his house. The "rest of the gang" being Hazel, Frank, Nico, Will, Piper, and Leo. Mrs. Jackson was always so willing to let people over, and her cooking was to die for.

It's been peaceful for some time now, and no surprise prophesies and shown up... yet.

But... Why did she feel so uneasy? Annabeth constantly turned and looked around, anxious for what seemed to be absolutely no reason. Just something didn't settle right with her. Something that seemed to hide from her in the shadows, not wanting to be caught.

Finally, she gave in, and peered into the nearby alleyway. It was dark, and she couldn't make out anything... except for a small figure slumped up against the brick wall of the narrow, dreary backstreet.

Annabeth took out her knife, and crept silently towards the small bundle of mystery. It didn't seem to notice her, and heck, it didn't even seem to be conscious at all right now. This made her relax just a little bit, but she still kept her guard up.

She crept closer and closer, and discovered... a child? That's right, a small, frail girl lay in the alleyway, shivering, and unconscious.

The girl looked Asian (she could tell that even in the darkness) with short black hair, and pale skin. Dark eye-bags barely visible in the dim light.

Annabeth started to pity and give sympathy to her. This was a common occurrence, considering how cruel this world could be, but something about this one shook her heart.

Annabeth wondered... Could she save her?

How would the others react if she showed up with a homeless girl in her arms.

Even though the girl looked nothing like her, it reminded Annabeth of her past. A young girl, struggling to survive in a world where danger lurked in every hidden corner. Heck, she was still living like that now. Except this young child has no one to rely on. Even back then she'd always had Luke and Thalia, even before the camp. Could she give that kind of companionship and love to to her?

...

Hah... What a thought. Annabeth could leave right now if she wanted to. She could leave this girl to either die or survive by herself, and forget about anything.

But Annabeth was't that kind of person.

Staying firm in her decision,(though she felt hesitant for just a moment) Annabeth picked the child up, and headed towards the Jackson's apartment.

Percy honestly didn't know what to think of his girlfriend anymore. He still loved her, of course, it's just that this was kind of pushing past the limits here.

Annabeth had just brought in a child. A literal child. A young girl that seemed to be on the brink of death. I could tell from the look on Nico's face.

"Annabeth, I trust your judgement, I really do, but do you think taking a random child off the streets was the smartest decision?" Percy argued,"You know as well as I do that she's gonna die soon."

"Well, maybe you don't know," Annabeth retorted.

"C'mon, help me out here Nico. Tell her, that the child's gonna die."

Will quickly got up and stood in front of his boyfriend. "Don't bring him into this, it's your problem." Percy scowled in frustration, while Annabeth shot him a smug look.

This fight was getting a bit personal, and left the others not knowing what to do.

Piper stood up, and spoke,"How about, we come to an agreement here. Will gets three days to try and treat the girl. If he can't, then we'll give her a proper goodbye. Sound good? Great." And without giving Percy, Annabeth, or Will a chance to speak, she handed the girl to Will, and ushered everyone else out of there.

Before the door closed shut, Percy could hear Leo mutter,"Well that's certainly one way to do it."

Will didn't know what to say. He's been left to take care of a child on the brink of death, and he'd had no say in it whatsoever.

It was day two of the three-day agreement, and he'd managed to stabilize the child. Will couldn't tell if that was a good thing, or a bad thing.

This was ridiculous; They didn't even know who the child was! What about their parents? What if Annabeth had taken this child away from her mother and father, who were looking right now?

That's what he would've thought if under normal circumstances. However, he had a patient to get to, and he's have to think about all the fine details later.

Hopefully, he'd save the girl, and saved FROM Annabeth's wrath...

Please remember, I am doing this while still in school (for now), and am writing this in real time. Nothing planned ahead except for main plot events.

I'll provably be dead for a few months, release a few chapters, and die again. Sorry.
