Chapter 3 - Chapter Three

Colin pov

"Poppy, what the hell happened to you?" my mom said as I walked into the house.

"One idiot's dog knocked me over in a puddle. I don't even want to talk about this. I am so angry right now." I saw a flash of light and heard the click of a camera

"Theodore John Williams! Delete that picture right now!" my mother said sternly.

I groaned in agony. Of course I just had to come home looking like this, the day my brother came back from baseball camp. My annoying, devilish eight year old brother.

"Are you kidding me?" he grinned victoriously. "This is prime blackmail material. I can't wait to show dad."

My mom grabs the phone from him and deleted the picture but I know this won't make any difference as he had probably hidden another copy somewhere.

I sighed. "Just admit it mom. You had this boy to torment me. I am going to have a shower to get rid of all this filth." I gave her my dress. "Is there any way you can help me fix this?"

"I'm sorry honey but I don't think this dress can be salvaged. I'll do my best to clean it up though." she said after inspection.

That's sixty two dollars wasted. Well, I guess I would just have to wear one of my old ones.

After showering and changing into clean clothes, I felt like a human again. I went through my closet to see if I had anything suitable to wear and then it occurred to me that if I did, I wouldn't have gone shopping in the first place. This brought my mind back to the guy (albeit handsome) earlier today. He must have been new in town because our town is pretty small and I don't think I had ever seen him and I would like it to stay that way.

That boy had trouble written all over him.

Why are you even thinking about him?

Just then, my stomach started grumbling. All that chaos in the afternoon made me forgot to eat. It was six pm in the evening and I was very hungry.

I made my way downstairs. My mom was tossing salad in a bowl and my brother was playing a video game. "What's for dinner mom?"

"I made you favorite. Spaghetti and meatballs with Caesar salad."

"Yes. Thank God. At least some part of the day is gonna be good." I sat on one of the stools next to the kitchen counter and I noticed my mom's special apple pie.

One piece of that pie would have you feeling like heaven. "Oh goodie. Are we having apple pie for dessert?"

"That pie is for our new neighbors." she said. "A man and a younger boy moved into the Clark's former house today. I didn't see a wife. So I thought I would give them a gift, you know, to make them feel welcome here."

I look at her suspiciously." I really hope you didn't offer your match making services? Please tell me you didn't."

She scoffed. "You think so little of me. I don't even know the man or why he's single--"

"If he's single" I argued back. "We don't know them so don't go and say something weird."

She looked flabbergasted. "You act as if I plan to set up all the people who are single in this community."

I raised my brow in askance. "Don't you?" My mom has the reputation for being quite the matchmaker, even though her help is rarely asked for. She met my dad through a matchmaking service and she has made it her goal to help others find true love the same way. Well, that's not much to do when you are a housewife with nothing much going on.

I noticed she was about to argue back so I lifted the pie from the counter. "You know what? You can continue cooking and I'll deliver it. You know to give them a taste of that friendly neighbor spirit."

She beamed. "That is so nice of you dear. Maybe your brother would like to go with you." She raises her voice looking pointedly at my brother who seemed not to notice anything other than the players on his video game.

I snorted. "He'd rather you ask him to jump in the lake. I'll be right back."

As I walk towards the house, I couldn't resist thinking about the guy I met today. What are the odds that he's the one living here? I laughed

This may be a small town, but the chances of him being my neighbor are next to impossible.

There is just no way.
