Chapter 5 - Carmen Mariano

Second Lieutenant Carmen Sofia Alexandra Mariano y Romanova is a female soldier and is one of the most elite officers in the country, Los Tiradores de Heneral Luna or the Marksmen of Death. The Tiradores was founded by General Antonio Luna during the Philippine-American War. But due to her status as a noblewoman and the only daughter of one of the richest men in the region, Don Joselito Mariano, her affiliation with the Philippine Revolutionary Army is kept a secret until this day.

Carmen has a mestiza appearance and resembles her Russian mother. She has pale skin with freckles along her face. She has large hazel brown eyes that illuminate when hit directly by the sun. She's small in stature with a petite body. Despite that, she can carry a rifle and can do acrobatics.

Born second among her siblings, Felix and Teodoro, she was spoiled by her father due to that she is the only daughter in the family. At the age of six she started having interests in handling weapons. To her father's fear that it might taint the family name, he sent Carmen to Europe to be taught to be a proper lady at the age of sixteen. There she met Antonio Luna and the other expatriates. She was taught military science and fencing. She also learned painting, crocheting, and to play musical instruments.

Her passion for warfare and strategy brought her to the Philippine Revolutionary Army, where Luna is the general. She would escape home just to train Luna's soldiers and hers. She became lieutenant after she passed an initiation where she assassinated a high ranking American officer and returned to camp unharmed. The general, impressed with the woman's fearlessness and bravery, promoted her lieutenant and assigned her in the Tiradores.

Being a noblewoman in the TIradores, she had to juggle between being a family daughter and a soldier. General Luna did everything to keep Carmen's identity safe. So, only a few officers like General Alejandrino know about her. Now that General Goyo is hunting all of those who associated with Luna, Carmen has to keep her guards up while keep in touch with the other officers in secret.

What Carmen loves the most is her motherland, and her cat Ragnar. She also has an exceptional talent in painting and sharpshooting. She speaks poetically sometimes, just like the general. But, she could be blunt most of the time. She is strict but compassionate at the same time. She thinks for her soldiers rather than herself. She will risk her life just for the sake of her country.
