It's been two days since my mom gave me the news of moving to California.
And in those two day I had left in San Francisco, I hung out with my friends, I went shopping with them, and had a sleepover at my best friends house.
But, on my last day in San Francisco, I told my crush; Jake, that I like him.
My heart was pounding so fast, and I felt like I was gonna pass out when he kissed me and told me " I like you too."
I felt like a thousand butterflies were going crazy in my stomach when he said that to me.
But, what made me even happier, was when I told him I was leaving, but when I turn 18, I'll come back to San Francisco, and he said he'll wait for me.
I wasn't expecting to hear what he told me, I was actually expecting him to reject me. But I'm happy he didn't.
When I told my bestie Devlin, she started to jump up and down, saying " I told you so!"
And yeah, she did.
Jake is the most popular guy at my high school, his the quarter back in the football team, and me and Devlin are cheerleaders.
Well, I was a cheerleader.
She would always catch me staring at him, and she would start to laugh, telling me to just go and tell him already. But I was to scared too. I would tell her that he was probably gonna reject me.
And she would always tell me the same thing "Girl please, your soo pretty! He'd be an idiot if he rejects you!" And if I'm being completely honest, I don't really think Im pretty, so I wouldn't believe her when she would tell me that.
But now, I see that I should have listened to her.
Now I wish I would have told him sooner, I would have had more time to hang out with him, and maybe go on dates and go watch movies like teens our age do.
But now, I have to wait 7 months and 14 days to be able to come back to San Francisco, that's when I'll be 18.
" Honey, you ready to go?!"
When I heard my mother scream to me from the front door of our house, I snapped out of my thoughts, and I realized that this was gonna be the last time that I would be in the house I grow up in...
If it were up to me, I would stay in this house forever. I mean, yeah there are some bad memories with my dad and mom. But, when my dad left, everything became great.
I had the best times of my life here, in this house. And leaving it now, makes me want to cry.
"Yes mom, I'm coming..."
And with that, I closed the door from my room, and went down stairs where my mom was waiting for me.
"You okay honey?"
"No...but I'll be okay soon."
"I promise Ruby, this is gonna be great! Your gonna love Roger as much as I do."
"Sure, if you say so..."
And with that, my mother closed the door of our house. And we were on the road, on our way to California.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I ended up falling asleep three hours into the drive.
I woke up to my mom shaking me violently, while screaming something at me.
I don't know how many hours my mom has been driving for. But when we left, it was early in the morning. And now, it's almost night time.
"Ruby! Ruby! Wake up, we're here! Look!"
When I looked out my window, there was palm trees, and a huge beach!
"Wow..."
"Isn't it beautiful?! Our new home!"
When I heard my mother say home, I felt disgusted.
"Yeah, it's beautiful, but it will never be home to me."
My mother stopped smiling when I said that to her. She just turned her head towards the road again, and didn't say anything from there.
I meant what I said to my mother, if she thinks I agreed with this whole thing, then she thought wrong.
I'm still mad at her for marring a guy in a week. And I keep trying to convince myself that this is gonna be great, but I can't seem to believe it.
I hate that I had to leave San Francisco, I hate that I had to leave my friends and Jake, and I hate that I had to leave my home, for a man my mother doesn't know well, and a man I have never met.
This is bullsh*t!
As I kept looking out my window, I started to notice how big the houses were, and right when I thought that was as big as they can get, my mother drove up a hill, where there was this huge house!
It looked like a resort!
"Holy sh*t..."
"We're here!"
I could see how excited my mother was, but me on the other hand, wasn't feeling excited. I felt nauseous.
I don't belong in a place like this! This isn't me!
I started to get annoyed by the thought of not fitting into this new life my mom dragged me into.
When my mom hangs up the phone, the door to the mansion opened. It was a huge door, made of oak wood, and it was a nice chocolate color.
There was an a man that looked around the same age as my mother, that came out of the front door.
When my mother saw the man, she got out of the car, and ran into his arms.
I've never seen my mom ran that fast before, well I have, but this is the first time she ran that fast for something good.
Well, for her it's good. But for me.... It's gross. Kissing and hugging a man you barley know... Yeah, no thanks.
When I got out of the car, I went straight to our trunk to get my suitcase.
I started to hear heavy foot steps walking towards me, but I didn't turn around. I just kept grabbing my things.
" So, you must be Ruby! It's a real pleasure to meet you! My name is Roger Anderson."
When I turned around to see Roger, I didn't expect him to be good looking for his age. I actually didn't expect him to be good looking at all.
But, damn. I guess my mom dose have good taste after all.
When I was done examining him, I noticed he had his hand sticking out, waiting for me to shake it.
But, I didn't. I just looked at him, looked at his hand. And turned back around to finish grabbing my stuff.
"Ruby!"
My mother sounded angry, but I didn't care.
" It's okay Rosie, don't worry about it. I understand that she's probably not comfortable towards me yet. So, I don't mind."
When Roger said that to my mother, she wasn't angry anymore, she went back to smiling and talking with him again.
It didn't even take two seconds for Roger to change my mother's mood.
When I was done with grabbing my things. I started to walk towards the huge front door.
I felt like I was dreaming, how could someone afford a house this big?!
It's a beautiful house. You can see the whole beach from the top of the hill, the house is a black with grey color from the outside, and there are this huge glass walles. You can see the living room from there. It must be an amazing view at night. I'll probably check it out later.
When I made my way into Rogers house, I was greeted by an old guy, and three woman.
"Hello, Miss..."
"Oh Ruby, Ruby Gonzalez."
"Ah Miss.Ruby, is it alright if we take you bags, and coat?"
"Oh no thanks, I'm good. I can do it by myself. That's why God gave me arms and legs after all."
The old guy didn't really look pleased with what I said, but I meant it. I can take my stuff by myself perfectly fine.
"Ruby, let them take your things. It's their jobs, that's what I pay them for."
I turned around to see my mother and Roger standing behind me.
I was already annoyed with Roger and my mother, and now this!
"Mr. Anderson is right Miss.Ruby. Let us do our job. That is what he pays us for after all."
After that, he turned to look at the three women, and right away one of the women came and took off my coat, and the other two grabbed my stuff, and took them up stairs.
Before I could say something to Roger, he started to speak.
"I have something to show you ruby, I have been working on it since I came back from Vegas."
"Oh really? Have you been working on it? Or has your servents been working on it?"
Roger started to laugh. And that made me even more p*ssed off then I already was. Right when I was about to say something else, I felt a pinch in the back of my arm.
"Ouch..."
"Knock it off Ruby."
My mother whispered to me while walking towards Roger.
"Come now, follow me."
With that, Roger walked towards a door that was at the end of the livingroom. When he opened the door, we started to walk down a hall.
The hall was full with pictures of a little boy. The little boy looked a lot like Roger.
Maybe it's Roger when he was a kid. If it is, he was a cute kid.
"This is it!"
I heard my mother say at the end of the hall. When I got to where her and Roger were. There was this huge wooden door.
The door was a vanilla color, and it had a huge carved tree, and under the tree was a carved piano. And on the sides of the door were carved music notes.
"Wow. This is beautiful..."
I was amazed by the talent of the person who carved this door.
"Isn't it a beauty! I hired a Japanese guy to hand carve this door just for you. Your mother was the one who chose the design for you."
"Do you like it honey?"
When I turned to look at my mother, I saw how excited she was.
"I love it mom, thank you. But... What's inside the room?"
"Well, that's for you to find out."
When Roger said that to me, he handed me a key.
I was nerves, but excited to open the door. And when I did, it was a huge library.
That was the first time I have seen so many books. I love the smell of books, and I love to read too.
"Wow... I don't know what to say..."
I was speechless. Now I really felt like I was dreaming.
"Your mother spent hours picking all your favorite books and buying you ones from your favorite authors too. I had my servents put all the books in alphabetical order. Just for you. I hope you like it Ruby."
"Like it? I love it! Thank you so much guys, I appreciate it!"
I couldn't believe what Roger and my mother did...just for me. This must have costed a fortune. Now I kinda feel bad for the way I treated him in the beginning.
When I went to take a closer look at the books, I noticed that the bookshelfs were also hand carved with music notes.
"Hey mom, why is there music notes on the door, and shelf's? Why not carve books?"
"Well, because of this!"
My mother grabbed my hand, and started to lead me to the back of the room. Where their was a grand piano. The piano was also carved with music notes, and the walls at the back of the room were also made of glass. Where you can see all the lights of the city.
"Oh my god..."
"Your mother told me how much you like to write music, write songs, and sing. And she also mentioned that you play piano. So, I decided to get you a piano too."
When my father left, my mother had to work three jobs to be able to maintain us both. I saw how much my mother would struggle, so I decided to sale my grand piano to help my mother out with money. My grandfather gave it to me when he passed away. I was sad when I sold it, but if it helped my mother out, just a bit....then it was worth selling it.
So, when I saw how much my mother and Roger put into this room. I started to cry.
My mother came and hugged me.
"Thank you, thank you so much..."
I felt happy, and guilty at the same time.
I let go of my mother, and started to walk towards Roger.
"I'm sorry for how I treated you in the beginning, I shouldn't have treated you that way. I'm real-"
Before I can finish, Roger brought his hand to my head and smiled at me.
"It alright kiddo, all is forgiven. I understand. I would be p*ssed off to if I had to move. But I hope that in the future we can get along better."
I laughed a bit, but his right. If we're gonna be living under the same roof, we have to get along.
"Alright then, I'll try my best..."
With that, my mother and Roger started to walk out of the room.
But, before Roger left, I had to let him know something.
"Hey Roger..."
"Yes?"
"Your not so bad after all..."
