Chapter 28 - Chapter 28 - "you still owe me"

"It's morning." Faun huffed, crossing his arms. "And I wasn't sneaking around, I just wanted to check if you were awake." He grumbled, averting his face.

Declan glanced over at the clock, the blinking digital clock read 3: 25 am.

"Really now?" He turned to Faun.

If Faun was looking at Declan he might have caught a glimpse of the mischief dancing in his pale grey depths.

Faun made a small unintelligible sound, tucking his head in his shoulders.

"Sorry I disturbed your sleep." He mumbled, making a move to leave the bed. "I'll go back to my room now…"

He didn't get very far when a soft sound left his lips. "Ow, you're sitting on my tail." He complained, peeved.

A light chuckle escaped Declan. "Where do you think you're going?"

Faun was caught off guard. "To my room." He answered sassily. "Let go of me." He ordered crisply.

The room was dimly lit but if he looked carefully, he could see Declan holding onto his tail.

Of course, Declan would take the opportunity to tug on his tail.

He could understand the human's fascination with that appendage but he wasn't the biggest fan of the way it made him feel.

Declan's grip was firm but gentle. "You still owe me, remember?" He drawled, using his other hand to cup Faun's waist to pull him closer.

Faun bit his lower lip, heat slowly rising on his cheeks. He could feel his skin tingle from where Declan touched him.

What was he up to?

He hummed, his voice softer. "What do you want?"

Declan felt his heart slow down. "Just spend the rest of the night here." He managed to casually say.

Faun knew it wouldn't be that simple, he could hear his heartbeat from how fast it thumped.

Declan had him firmly in his grasp, one hand on his tail, the other holding his waist and he was so close to him that he could feel the warmth emanating from his body.

He knew he could leave if he wanted to, all he had to do was step away and Declan would let him go.

… but he really didn't want to go…

"Okay." He agreed quietly, his voice even softer.

Declan hadn't been expecting this outcome, he had expected Faun to scold him and roll right off bed.

He didn't falter though, letting go of Faun's tail when it became evident that the hybrid wouldn't try to run from him.

It hit Declan then that he had never slept beside anyone before, he expected his skin to crawl at the thought of it but nothing happened.

Not even when he pulled Faun fully against him, treating the hybrid like a personal body pillow.

Faun felt fragile in his arms, like a wrong move from Declan could snap his limbs, it made Declan treat him with care.

He made sure that Faun was comfortable, holding him like he expected him to bolt at any moment.

Faun bit back a gasp, holding his breath when Declan rested his head on his torso, his powerful arms wrapped snugly around his waist.

He never tagged Declan for the clingy type but even more than that, he wished he minded it more than he did.

He couldn't get attached to the human, it would bring him nothing but pain and suffering.

But, after endless nights of sleeping alone and curling around himself to sleep, someone else doing that made his heart feel like it was melting into a pool of tears that threatened to spill out his eyes.

Faun didn't think he could fall asleep like this but it was incredibly comfortable so it was nice enough just lying there and listening to Declan's quiet breathing.

Declan listened intently as Faun's heartbeat finally slowed down to a pace that didn't worry him, he didn't plan to fall asleep, knowing that his instincts wouldn't let him relax enough to.

It was okay to be like this though, feeling Faun's chest expand and contract gently, distracting him from his swirling thoughts.

Sunlight streamed languidly into a room in a cottage in the woods, the sparkling golden rays fell on the bed at one end of the room.

On the bed Declan and Faun were still fast asleep, somehow Faun had ended up on Declan but he still had a firm hand around his now bare waist, his shirt rucked up from sleep.

Sunlight danced in Faun's fiery gold hair that was splayed on Declan's chest, his tail wrapped around one of Declan's legs like it was the most natural thing in the world.

They might have slept on for much longer but a sunray fell directly on Declan's face, rousing him.

The first sight he saw as soon as he opened his eyes was Faun's sleeping face which was angled in his direction.

His hair was like a halo of spun gold, his eyebrows delicately arched and below them were long lashes that fanned out on his cheeks.

Tiny pinpricks of a colour were littered high on his cheeks and across a small nose, his small bow lips were slightly parted in sleep.

Under the sunray on his face, Declan's grey eyes almost shone gold as he intently studied Faun.

He had fallen asleep.

Somehow Declan had managed to fall asleep. With a deep sigh, he threw his head back against the pillows, his tousled inky black hair contrasting nicely with the white sheets.

He had to admit that he was more than a little shocked that he had fallen asleep, for quite a while too, because a glance at the clock on his bedside table told him the time was already past 9.

He would have preferred for Faun to sleep till he had his fill but they had a fair to go to today.

He glanced down at Faun again, the hybrid was still peacefully sleeping, quite deeply too and it made a smile stretch out his lips.

It was the first time Faun overslept, at least their reactions were mutual.

Faun's twitching ears caught his attention and he glanced sharply at it, his hands itching to touch but for some reason he didn't, settling for rousing him instead.
