"Fuck!" Colonel Reeves cursed aloud as he observed all the death surrounding him. He couldn't even find the strength to get back on his feet—it was too much for him.
Just then, some soldiers from another chopper that had taken off earlier returned with reinforcements. They had a large flamethrower attached to the chopper that they operated to burn away the living vine monster that had just slaughtered their comrades.
"Are you ok sir?" One of them came over and checked on Reeves's condition. He wasn't injured to the point where he couldn't move.
After he was helped to his feet, he was rushed into the helicopter. The pilot quickly took off before the plants overrun that area. Once in the air, Reeves glanced below at the carnage; every single tree on the street was now filled with glowing blue veins of some unknown substance like poisonous gas or an oil slick.
