The plot revolves around the lives of two sisters.
The older sister, Qi Fan, was taken away and given to another family by the grandmother who favored boys over girls because she was born ten minutes earlier.
The younger sister, Qiao Qiao, stayed with her mother and two years later, followed her parents back to the city, becoming a teacher's child.
A small portion of the population struck gold when the wave of venturing into business swept through, and the Qiao family was among them.
Qiao Qiao was throwing money around in bars.
Meanwhile, Qi Fan was feeding pigs in a pigsty, holding a dirty plastic bucket. Only after finishing farm work could she find time to sit at a worn-out desk and flip through her textbooks.
Later on, an economic crisis struck, and the Qiao family went bankrupt.
