"Thank you for helping me," Cora said, covering the marks on her arms self-consciously as had become a habit now and avoiding Grayson's eyes. 

Whenever she looked at him, seeking something there within his black irises that would speak to her of answers, she never found it. He would become unreachable and distant, and she didn't want to feel that bruise of rejection again. The physical bruises were better. 

Penelope pressed her lips together as Grayson glanced her way. There was a secret they both shared about the lycan, and Grayson didn't want to get in the way of that mate bond any more than he already had.
