Chapter 162 - Chase

Theo was too focused on his call to realize that the old woman whose phone he had taken was staring, wide-eyed into the trees. She had just watched the tail end of a massive wolf disappear into the darkness, and apparently it had made off with her phone. Why? Why would a wolf do that?

After she realized that it was not going to jog back down her sloped yard to return it to her, she crossed the kitchen to the landline and phoned the town police chief at home. Thankfully he was the son of an old friend. 

"Michael, I just saw a wolf carry away my cell phone into the woods out back. Big sucker. Stole it right from off my bedside table," she said, continuing to stare out the window at the trees. 

"Evening, Rose," the chief said gruffly on the other end.

"Did you hear what I said? I just saw a wolf snatch my phone and make off with it!"
