If Yushchenko and Yanukovych injured each other in the battle, maybe he would have a chance to come out and pick up the pieces, and even be re-elected for another term...

Because his prestige within the country wasn't strong enough to support such actions.
So Gu Qima originally was prepared for both scenarios.
Either retire gracefully and if Yanukovych, who had a good relationship with him, became president, that would be best; if not, even if Yushchenko was elected, it wouldn't be a big problem, since he had a fair relationship with both.
They surely wouldn't settle old scores with him once they were in power.
Or Yanukovych and Yushchenko would be deadlocked, even fighting each other to death, with neither being able to take office.
